Biography : Prof. Ryabinin has received his PhD in the P.K. Anokhin Institute of Normal Physiology, Moscow, Russia in June 1991, and did his postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jola, California in 1991-1996. Currently, he is working as a Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience in Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, Oregon. He is serving as an editorial member of Brain Research and refereed manuscripts for over forty scientific journals. He is member of the Society for Neuroscience, Research Society on Alcoholism, International Biomedical Research Society on Alcoholism, Society for the Study of Addictions and Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.
Biography
Research Interest : Dr. Ryabinin’s main research interest is in the role of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF)-related peptides in alcohol and drug addiction. Besides CRF, these peptides include urocortin, urocortin 2 and urocortin 3. His laboratory applies a combination of molecular, genetic and neuroanatomical techniques to understand the behavioral role of these peptides. For example, his studies mapping expression of inducible transcription factors c-Fos, FosB and Zif268 in rodent brain identified that alcohol self-administration leads to selective changes of neural activity in the urocortin-positive - cells of the perioculomotor area (pIIIu, also known as the Edinger-Westphal nucleus). His further studies showed that these cells are not only extremely sensitive to alcohol but are involved in regulation of alcohol consumption. For instance, using several inbred and selectively bred strains of mice and rats he found that alcohol-preferring strains of rodents have significantly higher measures of urocortin in the pIIIu and its projection areas than alcohol-avoiding strains. Furthermore, he showed that electrolytic lesions of urocortin-positive neurons completely eliminate alcohol preference in alcohol-preferring mice and attenuate alcohol-induced hypothermia. Another interest in his lab is developing novel animal models to study the contribution of social factors to alcohol and drug addiction

He has been honored with a number of awards, including the DeBakey Award for outstanding research and the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Award from the National Institutes of Health.
Biography
Research Interest : Dr. Dani’s research focuses on fundamental mechanisms underlying the communication and adaptability of the nervous system. The studies have shown that drug addiction shares many commonalities with processes normally attributed to learning and memory. Drug addiction subverts normal mechanisms of neuronal adaptation, learning, and memory. That subversion leads to long-lasting changes in behavior that accrue with the ongoing progression toward addiction. A multidisciplinary approach using cellular and higher-level physiological and biophysical techniques are employed along with a powerful arsenal of in vivo recordings techniques to examine freely-moving rats and mice while they perform pertinent behavioral tasks. Recent effort have measured synaptic changes in the brains of freely moving mice in real time during drug-linked associative memory. The studied showed that dopamine signals enable and regulate the mechanisms of learning that link environmental cues to addictive drug use. In that way, these learning cues motivate continued drug use.

Biography : Neural cell targeting in vivo by synthetic nucleic acids with antisense sequence complementary to mRNA and their use for gene activity detection have advanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of stem cell therapy since the discovery of the double-helical DNA in the 1950s. However, cerebral gene activity is rarely done except in biopsy of advanced brain tumor. My most important scholarship in my research career brings molecular biology into living brains: my colleagues and I under my leadership have developed state of the art in vivo gene transcript targeting by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). I have led several NIH-funded R01 projects where I designed patent-pending MR-visible probes for mRNA and gene transcription factors using targeting MRI technology. Three immediate applications for this technique are (1) evaluation of gene activities after exposure to drug of addiction, (2) neural cell-typing in vivo based on specific gene transcript targeting and (3) brain repair evaluation after cerebral ischemic injury by identify and locate neuroprogenitor cells in vivo.
Biography
Research Interest : My research interest is to develop in vivo cell targeting by imaging specific gene transcript or protein in vivo using magnetic resonance image (MRI). Specifically, we plan to use gene targeted MRI to measure changes in deltaFosB and histone deacetylase 5 associated with chronic exposure to amphetamine in live mice. Because mRNA sequence is conserved from rodent to human, the technology can be translated to non-human primates prior to application in humans. My expertise, leadership and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed work are outlined here. I have a broad background in gene targeting technology, with specific training and expertise in research areas. Working as a graduate student under Drs. CC Chang and JE Trosko, I received valuable exposure to the epigenetic theory of carcinogenesis. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, I intensified my training under Dr. LA Loeb, with whom I learned the mutator theory of cancer and aging. I carried out DNA polymerase purification and gene transfer for the mutator phenotype under a National Research Service Award, and later, a New Investigator Award from NCI. At the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland OH, I taught graduate students (Assistant Professor) and expanded my research as PI of an NSF research grant to include cell cloning of a mutant rodent cell line that under-produces DNA polymerase. I also imaged ongoing DNA repair and quantification of DNA polymerase in cell culture conditions. At the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, I worked as Technical Director of the DNA Diagnostic Laboratory. At Baylor College of Medicine, I established myself in neuroscience as PI on an Established Investigator grant funded by the American Heart Association. It was with this project that I laid the groundwork for gene transcript targeting technology, by developing effective antisense strategies in live rodents for gene knockdown, mRNA binding and cell targeting in the living brains of rats.

Biography
Research Interest : Environmental Health and its determinants, in order to understand the relationships between Environment and Health, particularly in the case of children, in contexts where health is worsened, improved or maintained. This way, as a scientist, I assume the commitment to contribute to guarantee the basic human right to a healthy environment, for those who are especially vulnerable and who have less power to influence decisions. The research essentially comprises the first stage of life and focuses mainly on health effects and on the associated environmental factors, namely on reduced doses of chemicals that are frequently lower than those considered being safe in known or accepted pathological mechanisms.
Occupational Health Determinants, namely those related to the quality of the physical environment (vg, tobacco smoke, nanoparticles), the social environment (vg, night work) and the psychosocial environment (vg, occupational situation, health, social support).
