Rémi MARTIN-FARDON is a Staff Scientist in the Molecular and Integrative Neurosciences Department of The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla.
He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The University of Montpellier II (France) in 1996.
He completed his B.S. in biology and physiology at the University of Montpellier II (France) in 1989.
He received his M.S. in physiology and pharmacology at the University of Montpellier II (France) in 1990.

Dr. Peter Martin has been a member of the faculty since 1986. He is Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry Interdisciplinary Research Training Program and the Vanderbilt Addiction Center.  His research and scholarly interests include the molecular basis, diagnosis, and treatment of drug use disorders with an emphasis on substance-induced mental disorders.

Dr. Newlin received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1980. Currently he works at RTI International, a large nonprofit research company. He is on the editorial board of three journals in the fields of addictions and man-machine interface. Dr. Newlin has authored approximately 80 papers or chapters in the addictions and related areas. 

I am a tenured HEFCE-funded Lecturer in the School of Medicine, University of Southampton. My medical degree was awarded in 1994 and I held clinical appointments until 1997. From 1998 I held an academic appointment and in 2006 I was awarded a PhD for the thesis “Perivascular pathways for the elimination of soluble and particulate matter from the brain: significance for Alzheimer’s Disease and Neuroimmunology”, supervised by Professors Roy O Weller and Hugh V. Perry. The project involved the elucidation of the pathways by which interstitial fluid drains from the brain specifically along the basement membranes of capillary and artery walls. From this work it became clear that it is these pathways that are blocked by Amyloid ß in the elderly and in Alzheimer’s disease. I am familiar with a wide range of techniques including histology, immunocytochemistry, confocal and electron microscopy, biochemical techniques and the BIAcore technique for studying protein binding.

Joseph DiFranza, MD, Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, is a recognized national expert on adolescent tobacco utilization. Since 1980, Dr. DiFranza has been conducting research on the topic of tobacco. His research covers a range of tobacco-related topics including the onset of nicotine dependence, the effects of tobacco advertising, tobacco industry public relations programs, tobacco-related complications of pregnancy, school smoking cessation programs, and the effects of environmental tobacco smoke. Dr. DiFranza is recognized nationally for his contribution to the efforts to prevent the illegal sale of tobacco to children.
