Sona Vasudevan PhD is an Assistant Professor in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Georgetown University Medical Center and a senior bioinformatics scientist at the Protein Information Resource PIR Dr Vasudevan is a structural biologist by training having earned her PhD in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto Canada Using the technique of Xray crystallography Dr Vasudevan solved structures of antibodies against proteins involved in cancer Her postdoctoral work was done in the labs of Zaverio Ruggeri Head Department of Experimental Medicine at the Scripps Research Institute and Thomas R Cech Nobel Laureate and former head of Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Colorado Dr Vasudevan has also gained experiences in the fields of blood coagulation homology modeling proteinligand interactions and RNA biology Dr Vasudevan is a recipient of many awards that include the International Human Frontiers Science Program Skaggs Research Fellowship and a Certificate of Appreciation for her teaching efforts Over the past ten years Dr Vasudevan has been heavily involved in the areas of bioinformatics specifically in protein annotation and development of methodologies for functional characterizations of proteins using structural information Dr Vasudevan has mentored over 20 students and directs several graduate level courses She serves as a reviewer for peerreviewed journals
