Neuropathology using immunohistochemistry, molecular biological and genetic methods can achieve a diagnosis or classification in up to 95%, using homogenous and harmonized definitions and standardized inter-laboratory methods, standards for the assessment of nervous system lesions, and considering exact clinical data. In addition, detection of NFTs, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and granulovacuolar degeneration in the absence of amyloid plaques suggests that these lesions may precede Aβ deposition and may represent a pre-amyloid stage of pre-AD not yet considered in current recommendations for the neuropathological diagnosis of AD.
