    Dr. Verma is Chief of the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s (EGRP) Methods and Technologies Branch (MTB), and oversees its research portfolio and initiatives that focus on methods to address epidemiologic data collection, study design and analysis, and to modify technological approaches developed in the context of other research endeavors for use as biomarkers and methods to understand cancer susceptibility. He is responsible for stimulating EGRP-funded research on epigenetic approaches in cancer epidemiology and has been instrumental in developing epigenetics research for NIH as a whole. Dr. Verma helped to develop a Request for Applications (RFA) on Environmental Influences on Epigenetics with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and represents the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), in NIH\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Roadmap Initiative on Epigenetics . He helped develop an RFA on Comparative Systems Genetics of Cancer with NCI\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Division of Cancer Biology (DCB), and is known within the extramural research community as an EGRP Program Director for Program Announcements (PAs) on Small Grants for Cancer Epidemiology and Pilot Studies in Pancreatic Cancer. He also organized a workshop to explore developing a concept for a research initiative on mitochondrial DNA and cancer epidemiology. Dr. Verma was, and continues to be, a co-Program Director for initiatives in gene-environment interactions in cancer etiology, including the Breast and Prostate Cancer and Hormone-Related Variants Cohort Consortium (BPC3), which is a collaborative project to pool data and biospecimens from a group of large prospective cancer epidemiology cohorts. Dr. Verma joined EGRP as a Program Director in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed Acting Chief of EGRP\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s former Analytic Epidemiology Research Branch (AERB). When EGRP reorganized in 2007, he was appointed Acting Chief of MTB and of the Host Susceptibility Factors Branch (HSFB), for which he served as Acting Chief through 2008. Before joining EGRP, he was a Program Director in NCI\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP), where he worked in the areas of biomarkers, early detection, risk assessment, and prevention. He also was Coordinator of DCP\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs. He was on the faculty in the Biochemistry Department of Georgetown University before joining NIH.     BIOGRAPHY

    Jimmy Thomas Efird completed his Doctorate in Epidemiology (Biostatistics Concentration) at Stanford University School of Medicine. He currently is an Associate Professor at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University (ECU) and has a joint appointment as Epidemiologist/Chief Statistician in the Center for Health Disparities Research. Prior to joining ECU, Dr. Efird was Director of the Biostatistics Facility at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (Honolulu, Hawaii) and an Associate Member of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.    BIOGRAPHY

    Associate Professor Jagat Kanwar is group leader and head of the Nanomedicine and Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biomedical Research has an international reputation in investigating fundamental and applied molecular aspects of cancer and chronic inflammation. His research aims are to discover treatments for multiple sclerosis as well as cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases. His current research is focused on investigating fundamental and applied molecular aspects of cancer and chronic inflammation and developing nanomedicine based targeted drug delivery systems to cure these diseases.     Pascal M. Dohmen is staff surgeon at the Heart Centre Leipzig and university Professor at the University of Leipzig since 2010. He achieved his M.D. degree form the Catholic University Louvain in 1997. He was co-worker at the CEHA as well as EHB. In 1994 he performed some additional training at the Texas Heart Institute.     Badal Saha is a Lead Scientist, Bioenergy Research Unit, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, USDA-ARS, Peoria, IL.     Biography :
    I received my PhD in 2003 and have extensive experience in tissue culture and genetic engineering of various plants including oilseed Brassica napus, barley, tobacco and poinsettia. Recently, I have established a research group focusing on genetic engineering of ornamental crops and molecular farming for plant produced human and fish vaccines. I, together with co-workers, have developed a stable Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method for poinsettia (Clarke et al. 2008); a UK patent on the method was filed in 2007. My research on transgenic poinsettia has also attracted interest in collaboration in the ornamental industry, both nationally (G3 Ungplanter) and internationally (PLA international (Denmark), Ornamental Bioscience in Germany, personal communication). In addition, I have acquired good experience of project management, international collaboration and networking. I have been the project leader for several projects funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) (e.g. NFR 169-84 for BILAT: Norway-China, NFR174998/D15 for BILAT: Norway-USA, NFR 182510/I10, a recently funded project (NFR 192510) on production of human vaccine in tobacco chloroplasts (2009-2012) under the Global Health and Vaccination Research (GLOBVAC, www.rcn.no) program, and project NFR 199398 (2010-2013)). Through these projects, I have established good international networks in China, North America and European countries. I am currently participating in a new EU-funded COST Action on Molecular Farming (FA0804) where 23 European countries are represented including Norway. Since the year 2006, I have been coordinator for China collaboration at Bioforsk, to promote research cooperation between Bioforsk and Chinese research organizations. Up to date, Bioforsk has successfully developed collaborations with a number of research academies and universities such as the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Changchun, Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Shenyang, and Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HAAS) in Harbin.     Dr. Wenlong Tang is a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Alabama. His research interests include locomotion analysis, signal processing and pattern recognition. He developed a noninvasive early detection methodology based on locomotion analysis for neurological and neuromuscular disorders. He has published more than 20 papers in journals and conference proceedings. Moreover, he is the co-inventor of a pending US patent and two Chinese patents. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2010.     Develop data integration approaches for analyzing the next generation sequencing data (NGS), single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, gene expression data and gene copy number data related to cancers. Genomic data has already been generated and continues to be generated detecting the presence of neurological and neuromuscular disorders at an early stage. To detect those disorders using non-invasive techniques and with low bias is extremely difficult right now. Detecting neurological and neuromuscular diseases in an early stage by using an in-house gait analysis system in laboratory rats in a non-invasive way. Analyze the data in common computer languages, such as C++, Java, etc. They can also program by using some commercial software packages, such as LabVIEW, MATLAB.     RESEARCH INTEREST

    Ass. Prof. Katherine M. Pappas received her PhD in the University of Athens, Greece (1992-1997), and her post-doctoral training at UoA (1998) and at Cornell University, NY(1999-2002). Since 2003 she is appointed in the Faculty of Biology, UoA. She has regularly served in the UoA Senate and in the Faculty decisions board, has been an appointed consultant in the Greek Food Safety Authority, Ministry of Health, a proposal evaluator in Greece and the EU, and a member of several national and international societies and associations (currently serves as an ASM International Mentor). She has PI-ed competitive research projects, including two collaborations with the US DOE-Joint Genome Institute. She is ad hoc reviewer for journals like Nucleic Acids Research, Molecular Microbiology, BioMedCentral, ISME, Journal of Applied Microbiology, and others. Has authored research articles in Nature, Nature Biotechnology and other prestigious journals, and book chapters for Springer and Humana Press.     Dawen Gao is an associate professor at the Northeast Forestry University in Harbin, China. January 2006-2007, he spent a year at Stanford as a visiting scholar in Professor Criddle\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s research group. He received M.S. in Environmental Engineering, and Ph.D. in Municipal Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology. His current research focuses on the fouling of membrane bioreactors (MBRs), including anaerobic and aerobic membrane bioreactors, investigating the relationship between the production of foulants and microbial community structure in MBRs, and the effects of changing bioreactor operational conditions to select against microbial populations that generate membrane foulants.     Dr.Ramkrishna Sen is heading a vibrant research group at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. His students are involved in developing, modeling and optimizing processes for production, characterization and applications of marine lipopeptide biosurfactants; probiotic based nutraceuticals, plant oil and algal lipid based biodiesel; lignocellulosic bioethanol; important by-products in algal biorefinery model and microbial/enzymatic modifications of lignocellulosics. Dr. Sen, being a bioprocess engineer with industrial experience on recombinant therapeutic proteins and probiotics as the Manager (R&D:Biotech), Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., India, set his research priorities in the areas of biotherapy and bioenergy. Thus, his research endeavors are mainly focused on developing novel bioprocesses and bio-products for health-care and biofuel applications. In the last 5 years, his laboratory has produced 4 Ph.Ds; successfully completed 4 Government sponsored R&D projects and 1 industry (USA) funded consultancy project; filed 7 patent applications; produced about 35 international journal publications and 6 chapters in internationally published books.
