NANOG gene codes for nanog protein involved in the self renewal of embryonic stem cells. This is considered as a key factor for pluripotency of embryonic stem cells and gives potential to derive any type of cells (endoderm, ectoderm, mesoderm). Presence of more amounts of Nanog protein in the mouse embryonic stem cells caused self renewal but in the absence caused differentiation of embryonic stem cells into functionally different cells. This gives very important clue to the medical world. The literal understanding of this gene will lead into new avenue where patient own cells can be used for curing many degenerative diseases and sprouts the healing power hidden within the body.
