Heart Diseases

Heart diseases is also known as cardiovascular disease, It includes stroke, hypertensive heart disease, aortic aneurysms, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, congenital heart disease, endocarditis and peripheral artery disease. These may be caused by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, lack of exercise, obesity, high blood cholesterol, poor diet. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself.

Pediatric Cardiology

It deals with disorders of the heart that can lead to heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases in children. The pediatric cardiology deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The age limit for the pediatric cardiology usually ranges from birth up to 18 years of age. This field adds diagnosis of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology in children.

It is hardening and narrowing of the arteries. It is also known as arteriosclerotic vascular disease. It is a form of invasion and accumulation of white blood cells. Syndrome of Atherosclerosis is affecting arterial blood vessels due to a chronic inflammatory response of WBC in the walls of arteries. These clogged fatty substances are known as plaques or atheroma. Atherosclerosis leads to many other severe heart diseases such as Coronary heart diseases, peripheral heart diseases, heart failure and stroke.

Sudden Cardiac arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs suddenly without warning. The pumping action disrupted in sudden cardiac arrest, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Due to sudden cardiac arrest, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs of the body. This result in an electrical malfunction causes irregular heartbeat; later a person loses consciousness and pulse death occurs in minutes. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to people of all ages and health conditions.

Journals related to Sudden Cardiac arrest
Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, European Heart Journal.

Myocardial Infarction

Myocardial infarction is commonly known as heart attack. It occurs when blood flow stops to a part of the heart causing damage to the heart muscle (myocardium). It discomforts in shoulder, arm, back, neck and jaw. It causes heart failure, an irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest by blocking the pathway of blood flow. When a part of the heart muscle is damaged it is said to be infarcted. The term myocardial infarction (MI) means damaged heart muscle.

Heart Failure

When the heart is unable to pump sufficiently and stops pumping blood around the body it causes heart failure. The most common causes are heart attack, high blood pressure and cardiomyopathy. Symptoms commonly include shortness of breath, swelling and fatigue. Lifestyle changes - such as exercising, reducing salt in your diet, managing stress and losing weight — can improve the quality of life along with the protection of heart failure.

Echocardiography is an ultrasound test that uses high-pitched sound waves that are sent through a device called a transducer; it is commonly used for diagnosis of heart diseases and can create images of heart by using standard two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound. It is a simple and painless procedure that uses sound waves to take “pictures” of our heart and shows the heart rhythms.

Congenital Heart Disease

These heart diseases refer to the heart disease in cardiovascular structures that occur before birth. It mainly obstructs blood flow in the heart or vessels. These defects occur while the fetus is developing in the uterus and may affect approximately 1 in 100 children. Congenital heart defects may produce symptoms at birth, during childhood.

Journals related to Congenital Heart Disease
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, Congenital Heart Disease, The Journal of the American Medical Association, European Heart Journal.

Stroke occurs when supply of blood is interrupted. Due to this thebrain does not get enough oxygen, which results in the death of brain cell. There are two types of strokes-Ischemic, due to lack of blood flow and hemorrhagic, due to bleeding. It mostly affects overweight and high blood pressure people.

Cardiac biomarkers

Cardiac biomarkers are used for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Cardiac biomarkers are enzymes, proteins, and hormones that are associated with heart function, damage or failure. These are released into the blood stream from damaged heart muscle. Cardiac markers are used in the diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with chest pain and suspected acute coronary syndrome. It is present with chest discomfort consistent with acute coronary syndrome. It is actually the diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with chest pain and suspected acute coronary syndrome.

Cardiac Surgery

It is performed by cardiac surgeons of heart. It also include the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of heart diseases. To treat valvular heart disease from various causes including endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease and atherosclerosis, Cardiac Surgery is applied which includes heart transplantation. The most common type of heart surgery for adults is coronary artery bypass grafting, in which a healthy artery or vein from the body is connected, or grafted, to a blocked coronary (heart) artery.

Heart Transplants

It is performed by cardiac surgeons to heart; It is surgical procedure to perform a heart failure and severe coronary artery disease. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is damaged or weak. It can't pump enough blood to whole body but can enhance the heart activity.A heart transplant removes a damaged or diseased heart and replaces it with a healthy one.

Heart Attack

It is the blockage of the arteries and vessels that provide oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to heart. It is also called coronary heart disease and is the leading cause of death in humans. This occurs when the coronary arteries become blocked or clogged. Often this leads to an irregular heartbeat - called an arrhythmia - that causes a severe decrease in the pumping function of the heart. A blockage that is not treated within a few hours causes the affected heart muscle to die.

Journals related to Heart Attack
Heart Failure Clinics, Current Heart Failure Reports, Heart failure monitor, JACC: Heart Failure, Journal of Congestive Heart Failure and Circulatory Support.

Open Heart Surgery

It performed by cardiac surgeons to heart, surgery is done on the heart muscle, valves, arteries, or other parts of the heart. It includes Aortic valve surgery, atrial septal defect repair, Cardiac transplant, Coarctation of the aorta repair and Heart transplant. A heart-lung machine is used in most cases during open heart surgery. While the surgeon works on the heart, the machine helps send oxygen-rich blood to the brain and other organs.

Journals related to Open Heart Surgery

Bypass Surgery

To create a new route for blood and oxygen to reach our heart, bypass surgery is a surgery that is done to the problems caused by coronary artery disease and leads the blood to flow through the heart muscle despite blocked arteries. It is actually a surgery of heart blood vessel taken from your leg, arm, chest and abdomen. This surgery creates a new path for the flow of blood to the body. The surgeon in this therapy takes a healthy piece of vein from a particular part of the body and attaches to the coronary artery just above and below the blocked area of heart. This allows blood to bypass the blockage.

Journals related to Bypass Surgery
Circulation, Postgraduate Medical Journal, Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, The New England Journal of Medicine.

Ablation Surgery

It is a surgery used to treat abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias. Cardiac ablation is a procedure that is used to scar small areas in your heart which can results in irregular and abnormal electric heart beats. Endometrial ablation can be done by Laser beam (laser thermal ablation).Heat (thermal ablation), and Radiofrequency. An ablation is done using the same technique as an electrophysiology (EP) study and is often carried out at the same time.

It is measurable deterioration of the ability of the heart muscle to contract on regular intervals and finally results in heart failure. It damages the muscle tone of the heart and reduces its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy enhances the chances of haemorrhage. Cardiomyopathies may include medications, surgically implanted devices or, in severe cases, a heart transplant.

Journals related to Cardiomyopathy

Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac Catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose and cure heart diseases. A thin plastic tube is placed into a vein or artery of human leg or arm, through that doctor can perform diagnostic test and treatment for heart diseases. This procedure is most often done to get information about the heart or its blood vessels. It rarely causes serious complications.
