Cancer Proteomics

Proteomics based techniques allow the description of biomarkers and protein expression signatures, which are used to anticipate responses to drugs and the clinical course of disease, and such advice could be used to analyze therapy. Indeed, proteomics and imaging technologies are being associated to advance diagnostics, histological grading of tumours and responses to therapy. Such breakthrough is integrated by huge number of clinical samples being accumulate in biobanks, which allows researchers to screen large cohorts and approve their findings.

A cancer biomarker refers to a substance or process that is indicative of the presence of cancer in the body. A biomarker may be a molecule secreted by a tumor or a specific response of the body to the presence of cancer. Proteomic technologies hold recently great promise in the search of new clinical biomarkers for the early detection and diagnosis of cancer as well as the discovery of new therapeutic targets from accessible bio-specimens. Cancer systems biology encompasses the application of systems biology approaches to cancer research, in order to study the disease as a complex adaptive system with emerging properties at multiple biological scales.
