Biography

My PhD is in Nutrition in Sports and Chronic Disease from Virginia Tech, focused on using nutrition to influence oxidative stress and inflammation in the chronic disease of obesity.  I conducted a variety of human studies including weight loss trials and controlled feeding studies of various durations.  Through my postdoc at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine I gained extensive experience in a basic science laboratory working with an inflammatory mouse model and cell cultures (immune cells, fat cells).  I am now an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati with the broad goal of researching the interaction between diet and inflammation in chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Research Interest

Nutrition plays a key role in the development of chronic diseases and inflammation has been identified as a key underlying factor of many chronic diseases that is heavily influenced by diet.  I am studying the effects of heart healthy dietary patterns on inflammation.  I am interested in how intake of antioxidants, vitamins/minerals, phytochemicals, fiber, and unsaturated fats may reduce inflammation in addition to reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
