Biography

Aloke Kumar received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 2005 and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA in 2010. Currently, he is a Wigner fellow and Biosciences staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). At ORNL Dr. Kumar’s research program focuses on microbial biofilms and lab?on?chip devices. Dr. Kumar is credited with several innovations in the field of Lab?on?a?Chip (LoC) devices. His research on opto?electric manipulation of matter in microfluidic systems has been recognized by the scientific community through several awards, including the prestigious Josephine DeKármán fellowship.

Research Interest

Micro and Nanoscale fluid mechanics (microfluidics), electrical and optical manipulation of cells and particles (optical trapping, dielectrophoresis, electrowetting), lab?ona? chip devices, microbial dynamics (microbial biofilms, motility, chemotaxis, quorum sensing).
