Biography

Jan Schmid did PhD in Microbiology at the University of Hannover, Germany, in 1985, he has worked as a DFG postdoctoral fellow in the group of F. M. Harold (NJCIRM, Denver) on hyphal tip growth of Neurospora from 1985 to1987, followed by a postdoc in D.R. Soll’s lab (University of Iowa; 1987-1992) where he has developed computer-assisted DNA typing methods (Ca3 fingerprinting) for Candida albicans and began to use these to investigate its epidemiology. In 1992, he joined the faculty of Massey University, New Zealand, where he currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in Microbiology at the Institute of Molecular BioSciences.

Research Interest

Dr. Jan Schimdt research interests are Evolution and molecular and cellular biology of microbe-host interactions in pathogenesis (mainly Candida albicans) and mutualistic symbioses (fungal ryegrass endophytes).
