Biography

Dr. Masahiro Kihara is Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Socio-epidemiology, Kyoto University School of Public Health and has been involved in behavioral and prevention research in the field of HIV/AIDS for more than 20 years. He also serves as the senior adviser to the UNAIDS Collaborative Centre of Kyoto University since 2006. Professor Kihara has created an innovative multidisciplinary approach for health behavior change called “socio-epidemiology” that combines sociological with epidemiological as well as qualitative with quantitative approaches. Socio-epidemiology has been used successfully to understand and change sexual behaviors of youth in Japan.

Research Interest

Mixed method studies on male and female intravenous drug users in Iran and Nepal, sexual behavior surveys among rickshaw pullers in Bangladesh as well as among youth in China, Mauritius and Thai, and studies on the factors influencing abhorrence to antiretroviral therapies in Congo DR.
