Biography

Dr. Mauricio Antunes currently holds a position as a Special Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado.  He received his Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology from Purdue University, and as a post-doctoral research associate he was a key member of the group that developed the first eukaryotic synthetic signal transduction pathway and a de-greening genetic readout system, which when combined, resulted in a new synthetic trait, Plant Sentinels. He is a pioneer in Plant Synthetic Biology, and continues to develop genetic regulators for engineering novel plant functions.

Research Interest

Dr. Antunes is interested in developing artificially-controlled genetic networks to program plants and plant cells to perform desired functions. Synthetic genetic switches can be introduced into plants to precisely control gene expression, rewiring natural signaling and metabolic pathways, or generating novel traits. Engineering these systems to behave according to specific inputs can serve both basic research and field-applied purposes, allowing applications that range from enhancing crop productivity to on-demand bio-manufacturing (pharmaceuticals, biofuels, etc.).
