Biography

Dr. Thomas H. Mareci received a B.S. degree in physics in 1972, a M.S. degree in physics in 1979, both from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Oxford in 1982.  Currently he is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Florida, with affiliate faculty status in the Department of Physics and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He was the founding director of the Center for Structural Biology at the University of Florida, helped create the NSF-Funded National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and was the founding director of the Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility of the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida.  Dr. Mareci is a member of the American Epilepsy Society, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Research Interest

1) The study of central nervous system structure and function with magnetic resonance; In particular, mapping brain structural connectivity using diffusion-based magnetic resonance imaging methods and mapping of functional connectivity with functional magnetic resonance imaging.
 2) The study of the magnetic properties of materials, such as relaxation rates and susceptibility, in strong magnetic fields.
3) The development of high sensitivity magnetic resonance detection systems, such as inductively-coupled implanted coils for monitoring deep tissues.
