Professor Andy Benniston started his career at Warwick University (UK) where he obtained a 1st in Chemistry (Hons) in 1987 and a PhD in 1990 with Professor Peter Moore. He spent one year in Strasbourg with Dr Jean-Pierre Sauvage on a Royal Society Fellowship, and this was followed by a stay in Austin Texas at the Center for Fast Kinetics Research with Dr Tony Harriman. After spending around six years as a lecturer in the Chemistry Department at the University of Glasgow he moved to Newcastle University in 2001 to set up the Molecular Photonics Laboratory. Promotion to Senior Lecturer in 2003 was followed by appointment in 2011 to the Professor of Photonic Energy Sciences, with special research emphasis on the discovery of new solutions to problems in fields covering biology (real-time diagnostics) and chemistry (light-to-chemical fuel energy storage).

Research Interest :

Andy Benniston has worked on many different aspects of chemistry, studying in the early years the coordination chemistry of macrocycles and redox-active ligands for transition metal ion sensing. Back in 1993 he produced one of the first light-activated molecular shuttles, and prepared and studied several novel merocyanine dyes for photodynamic therapy applications. Other work has focussed on the study of photoactive metal-based catenanes, energy and electron transfer through molecular bridges, picosecond transient resonance Raman for studying charge transfer complexes, artificial zinc enzymes, molecular switches and fluorescent probes.
More recently special attention has focused on the use of borondipyrromethene (Bodipy) dyes for fluorescence-based applications in reactive oxygen sensing (ROS), neural imaging, and as rheology probes for in-situ viscosity measurements.

Dr. Zhiwei Hu is an associate professor in the Department of Surgery of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Prior to this position, he was a Research Scientist (Research Associate Professor) in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Hu is one of first few scientists who proposed to target both the tumor cells and tumor neovasculature. Subsequently he successfully co-invented/developeda novel Icon molecule for dual neovascular- and cancer cell-targeted immunotherapy. As co-inventor, he holds 4 US patents of Icon and its uses. The Icon has been tested for immunotherapy of cancer, aged-related macular degeneration (AMD) and endometriosis in preclinical studies. Icon immunotherapy is currently being tested in Phase I clinical trials for AMD patients. Recently his laboratory developed another targeted therapeutics, namely factor VII (fVII)-targeted photodynamic therapy (fVII-tPDT) using fVII peptides-conjugated photosensitizers for cancer (including chemoresistant cancer) and AMD. He is a member of the Yale Cancer Center, American Association for Cancer Research, and The American Association of Immunologists. He is an Adjunct Professor of Sichuan University School of Medicine and Nanchang University School of Medicine in China, and a Scientific Advisor for Iconic Therapeutics Inc. In 2011 he was elected as Vice President of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology in Connecticut (CAST-CT). Dr. Hu is a peer reviewer for numerous scientific journalsin immunology, photodynamic therapy and cancer research and serves as an editorial board member of The Journal of Immune Based Therapies, Vaccines and Antimicrobials, The Journal of Analytical &Bioanalytical Techniques, Advances in Breast Cancer Research, Open Journal of Immunology, Open Journal of Apoptosis, The Journal of Cancer Research and Treatment and Dataset Papers in Medicine. Starting February 2012, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Analytical &Bioanalytical Techniques.

Michael R Hamblin Ph.D. is a Principal Investigator at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, an Associate Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and is a member of the affiliated faculty of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology. He was trained as a synthetic organic chemist and received his PhD from Trent University in England.He directs a laboratory of around a dozen post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and graduate students. His research program is supported by NIH, CDMRP, USAFOSR and CIMIT among other funding agencies. He has published 168 peer-reviewed articles, over 150 conference proceedings, book chapters and International abstracts and holds 8 patents. He is Associate Editor for 5 journals and serves on NIH Study Sections. For the past seven years Dr Hamblin has chaired an annual conference at SPIE Photonics West entitled Mechanisms for low level light therapy and he has edited the seven proceedings volumes together with two other major textbooks on PDT. In 2011 Dr Hamblin was honored by election as a Fellow of SPIE.

His studies are focused on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. They have shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer disease. They are working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals. Their current studies focus on (i) the mechanism for RNA-based redox metal binding; (ii) the consequences of RNA oxidation on protein synthesis rate and fidelity; (iii) the role of redox active metals in mediating prooxidant and antioxidant properties; (iv) the signal transduction pathways altered in Alzheimer disease that allow neurons to evade apoptosis; and (v) mechanism of phosphorylation control of oxidative damage to neurofilament proteins.

Scott’s a protein biochemist, and is currently a Fellow in Analytical Sciences R&D in the Dow Chemical Company. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Plant Pathology from Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University, respectively and a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from Michigan Technological University. In 1996, he joined Dow AgroSciences where he established and directed the proteomics facility. Besides the core, Dr Putluri research focus is in the area of metabolomic profiling of tumors to obtain biochemical insights into cancer progression as well as develop non-invasive metabolic markers for detection and prognosis of tumors. He has successfully developed a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based metabolomics profiling platform and used it to study metabolome of prostate cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer. Dr. Zhiyong Peng received his PhD in analytical chemistry from Louisiana State University in 2012. After his postdoc study in Boston University, he joined the Heart Institute of East Carolina University as a Research Scientist focusing on development of laser speckle imaging technique for blood perfusion measurement and analysis. His research efforts span microfluidic biosensing applications, ultra-sensitive single-molecule detection and imaging, DNA/RNA molecular assays, and clean energy production. He is the inventor of a beam splitting technology to project a distant object onto a single digital imaging sensor to form synchronized and duplicate images in different spectral channels. He first demonstrated that cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) can be used as microfluidic substrate for efficient enzymatic reactions through a simple dynamic coating process. Meanwhile, he discovered that COC, when used in microfluidic chip for laser-induced fluorescence single molecule detection, can give unparalleled single to background ratio which promotes polymer microchip to be an enabling device for single molecule detection. Dr. Peng is an active peer reviewer for more than 15 reputed scientific journals in the field of analytical chemistry and biosensors. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers as well.

Dr. Hung V. Trinh received Ph.D. degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology with the subject of the human adenoviruses at University of Zurich, Switzerland in 2011. In addition, he has strongly developed in the field of the analytical chemistry such as mass spectrometry – proteomics identification, quantification (iTRAQ and label free) as well as post-translational modifications. Recently, Dr. Trinh has developed extensively methods for antigenicity and immunogenicity to measure and to quantify absolute antibody binding responses in clinical trials for the infection diseases, particularly in HIV-1 using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR – Biacore). Furthermore, he has developed methods to map specific epitope responses (6 amino acids – small molecules) to different vaccine trials and primary infection cohorts using Biacore. Dr. Trinh’s methods have been applied widely to access the biological questions in both academic and industrial settings.
