He fulfilled his responsiblities as Associate professor and Director of graduate students at the University of Maryland in the year 2010. He is awarded with several grants for his project works like NIH, and Univ. of Maryland College Park Seed Grant. He has published many articles.

 Biography
Research Interest :

Research in Dr. DeStefano′s laboratory focuses on the role of HIV reverse transcriptase (RT) and nucleocapsid protein (NC) in retroviral recombination and replication. They also analyze basic properties of these proteins including how they interact with nucleic acid sequences involved in replication and how their activities, as defined in the test tube, function in cellular replication. Other projects are aimed at isolating nucleic acid inhibitors (aptamers) that can bind very tightly to RT and inhibit its function. They also study poliovirus replication, specifically by examining the polymerase (3Dpol) and 3AB proteins. Their lab demonstrated that 3AB, like HIV NC, has nucleic acid chaperone activity. Chaperones are typically weak helix destabilizing proteins that promote hybridization of complementary nucleic acids and can help nucleic acids fold to their thermodynamically most stable state. There exact role in viral replication is unclear and deciphering this role is an important goal of their lab.

Dr. Garzino-Demo received his PhD at the University of Torino, Italy in 1988. From 1991 until 1996 Dr. Garzino-Demo worked with Dr. Robert C Gallo at the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology at NCI, NIH. Continuing his studies on cofactors in HIV infection and on HIV gene expression Dr. Garzino-Demo joined the Institute of Human Virology in January 1996 to further his studies on HIV suppressive factors produced by the immune system. He was a member of the team that originally identified RANTES MIP1a and MIP1ß as suppressive HIV suppressive factors in 1995. Subsequently he participated in the characterization of another chemokine MDC with broad HIV suppressive activity. In addition he has been the key investigator in a large study of antigen induced chemokine release in a well characterized adult cohort MACS cohort. He is also the author of several other scientific publications and reviews on chemokines their role in HIV infection and their regulation. The main focus of his research is on the role of host factors in controlling HIV infection. Recently he and his laboratory have described the HIV inhibitory activity of betadefensins demonstrating that hBD2 inhibits HIV through a novel antiviral mechanism mediated by a chemokine receptor CCR6 that induces increased expression of the antiviral protein APOBEC3G. These findings are of importance in mucosal immunity and HIV infection.

In 1996 she became a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology at the UMDNJ/RWJMS. During her tenure she made a novel finding that ISG15 a UBL is overexpressed in many tumor cells and its over expression interferes with protein polyubiquitination and degradation. She also worked on the repair of topoisomerase I (TOP1) mediated DNA damage. She showed that one of the repair mechanisms for TOP1 DNA covalent complexes is through the activation of the ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway. This novel repair mechanism is quite significant and may have implications in the resistance mechanism to the clinically used TOP1 directed anticancer drugs eg. Toptecan. In 2007 Dr. Desai joined the LSU HSC as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology.

Dr. Junji Xing received his Ph.D. at Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. During his Ph.D. studies, his research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanism of host innate immune evasion by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), interactions of virus and host cells, subcellular transport mechanism of viral proteins in host cells. As a postdoc associate in University of Minnesota, he investigated the mechanisms of immune suppression and pathogenesis by Arenaviruses in human primary cells or guinea pig animal model. As a research associate in Houston Methodist Research Institute affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine of Cornell University, his research is now involved in charactering the roles of TRIM family protein in host innate immunity regulation.

Biography :

Completed his PhD at Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, India. He determined the threshold size of duplicated DNA that titrates repeat induced point mutation (RIP) machinery. Moreover, he identified the first wild-isolate strain of Neurospora as a dominant suppressor of meiotic silencing. Both RIP and meiotic silencing are genome defense process in Neurospora. Currently, he is trying to understand the integration preference of HIV-1 and his results, based on one million integration sites of HIV-1 in human cultured cells, showed that HIV-1 has preference for the highly spliced and cancer genes. He is also involved in teaching at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Science (FAES), and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
