Michael Retsky is Research Associate at Harvard School of Public Health, Honorary Research Associate at University College London and Professor Adj at UANL, Monterrey, Mexico. He is a founder and on the Board of Directors of Colon Cancer Alliance www.ccalliance.org. He received a PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1974. Biography :

George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer′s disease research particularly for his work on oxidative stress. Perry received his bachelor′s of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California Santa Barbara. After graduation he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his PhD in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Drs. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures.
In 1982 Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer′s disease researchers with over 800 publications one of the top 100 mostcited scientists in neuroscience and behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Perry has been cited over 24000 times and is recognized as an ISI highly cited researcher Perry is editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimer′s Disease. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and past president of the American Association of Neuropathologists. Most recently he has been named a Foreign Correspondent Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. Perry′s research is primarily focused on how Alzheimer disease develops and the physiological consequences of the disease at a cellular level. He is currently working to determine the sequence of events leading to damage caused by and the source of increased oxygen radicals.

Huixiao Hong received his PhD at Nanjing University China in 1990 and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Maxwell Institute at Leeds University in UK. He was an Associate Professor at Nanjing University from 1992 to 1995 where he investigated computerassisted molecular design From 1995 to1998 he worked at National Cancer Institute at National Institutes of Health as a Visiting Scientist. He discovered and designed more than 60 potent HIV integrase inhibitors and cyclooxygenase COX inhibitors. He also identified a mononucleotidebinding site in HIV integrase and elucidated the stereoselective binding mode of ibuprofen in COX1. From 1998 to 2000 he held a Research Scientist position in Sumitomo Chemical Company in Japan. He joined the information technology and scientific computing contract under ZTech at FDA’s NCTR in 2000 and served as the computational science group manager from 2002 to 2007. He became a senior scientist at the US FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research in 2007. He published more than 80 scientific papers and served as an Executive Editor or a member of Editorial Board of 9 peerreviewed journals and as a reviewer of more than 20 peerreviewed journals in the area of pharmacogenomics proteomics bioinformatics and chemoinformatics.

Biographical Statement: Dr. Deborah L. Levy received a B.A. degree in 1972 and a Ph.D. degree in 1976 from the University of Chicago. One aim of her research program is to improve the correct identification of these non-penetrant gene carriers. A second major focus of her work explores novel mechanisms of genetic mutation. Research Interests: Although the role of genetic factors in the etiology of schizophrenia is well known, finding a gene(s) for schizophrenia has been elusive. Recurrence risk in first-degree relatives of schizophrenics is low (~6.5%), yet the disease persists despite low fecundity in affected individuals. This fact suggests that most of the carriers and transmitters of schizophrenia genes are some of the well siblings and parents of schizophrenics. One aim of my research program is to improve the correct identification of these non-penetrant gene carriers. My colleagues and I have identified and characterized four traits that are associated with schizophrenia and that are over-represented in well relatives of schizophrenic patients: eye tracking dysfunction, thought disorder, craniofacial dysmorphology and certain evoked response potentials. Unlike schizophrenia, which is certain to be multigenic, these traits may have a simpler genetic transmission. The higher penetrance of these traits than schizophrenia itself increases the power to detect a major locus for one or more of them, which may, in turn, be associated with the genetic transmission of schizophrenia. A second major focus of my work explores novel mechanisms of genetic mutation. Although we have undertaken sequence-based molecular genetic analyses, we are among the first labs to explore the role of structural rearrangements in the human genome and their potential role as risk factors for schizophrenia. We have shown that some of these mutations are inherited and that others occur as spontaneous events. Also, we have shown that reciprocal rearrangements of the same genomic regions are involved in schizophrenia and autism. This collection of rare variants, each of which is highly penetrant, is a major source of genetic heterogeneity in each of these diseases and is a major reason why sequence-based methods have failed to conclusively identify risk gene(s). Future directions include: 1) identifying the full collection of individual rare variants; 2) determining which are inherited and which are de novo events; 3) identifying the biological pathways that are adversely affected in neurodevelopment and that give rise to distinct subtypes of the same clinical syndrome; 4) understanding the mechanism by which reciprocal rearrangements of the same genomic region preferentially result in different clinical disorders, and 5) identifying the protective genetic and epigenetic backgrounds that account for unaffected carriers of these rearrangements. Similar approaches are likely to be fruitful in relation to bipolar disorder and are being undertaken concurrently. There are many other projects that cannot be described in the space allowed. My lab has active collaborations with investigators at Harvard University, Boston University, Duke University, Stony Brook University, McGill University, Shriver Center/University of Massachusetts, University of Toronto, University of California at San Diego, Rutgers University, MIT, Wellesley College, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and the Baylor College of Medicine.

David A. Johnson, Ph.D. graduated from Hofstra University with a BA in Biology in 1974. Dr. Johnson worked as a poison information specialist at the Maine Poison Control Center from 1980 to 1990. During the same period, he earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences. Following receipt of his doctorate, Dr. Johnson became a Post‐Doctoral fellow under Dr. Bernard Lown at the Harvard School of Public
Health and later a Senior Post‐Doctoral fellow at Interneuron Pharmaceuticals in Lexington, MA working under Dr. Richard Wurtman. Hugh Smyth is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics, College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin. He is also an Adjunct Associate Scientist at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Albuquerque, NM and Chief Scientist of Respira Therapeutics. He has a Pharmacy and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He has been a faculty member at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and at the University of New Mexico. Biography :

Dr. Kanwar is an immunologist and molecular biochemist with an international reputation in investigating fundamental and applied molecular aspects of cancer and chronic inflammation. He did his PhD from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. Before joining Deakin University in 2006, he was a Senior Scientist/Senior Research Fellow in the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. During the past decade his research both academic and commercial has centered on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms and/or finding treatments for a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases and different types of cancer. Dr Kanwar has published 55 research articles, 12 invited reviews and 5 book chapters, in highly ranked, international, peer-reviewed journals. These publications have added to the body of knowledge in the fields of immunology, cancer gene therapy, nanomedicine, cell biology and biotechnology, and have extended these disciplines. professor Afaf Kamal-Eldin has graduated with B.Sc. Honors Chemistry from the University of Khartoum, Sudan  1986 and obtained her M.Sc. from the same university  1990. She obtained a Ph.D. in Food Science from the Swedsih University of Agricultural Sciences 1993 and worked at the Department of Food Science, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU from 1994 to 2010. Prof. Afaf has persued research in the area of bioactive compounds in food, their bioavailability and bioactivity and in the area of dietary biomarkers. She is currently working at the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain, UAE.

My research has focussed mainly on the area of Food and Health, primarily with levels and health implications of bioactive compounds in foods, antioxidant mechanisms, biomarkers of a healthy diet, and hazardous compounds in food. The research included isolation and structural characterization of unknown compounds, development of analytical methods, studies on lipid oxidation and antioxidant mechanisms, studies on the absorption, metabolism and physiological activities of bioactive compounds, and evaluation of certain food components as biomarkers of dietary intake.

Growing evidence shows that elevated arginase activity is a key mediator in endothelial dysfunction and plays a critical role in cardiovascular diseases. In particular the downstream signaling of the activated RhoA or Rho kinase and Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase pathways leading to increased arginase activity/expression is been determined. Dr. Toque expects that his results will provide new information regarding the factor that activates arginase and their role in cardiovascular diseases and will help to identify possible therapeutic targets for preventing diabetes induced endothelial dysfunction.

The overall aim of my study is to better understand the mechanistic basis of vascular dysfunction, in order to identify new targets and develop new strategies to prevent endothelial and erectile dysfunction in hypertension and diabetes. We identify that activation of arginase is involved in diabetes and play a key role in cardiovascular diseases. During his study of biology Dan Seiler worked as a member of the nursing staff at Kiel University hospital. Post-graduate he quit this job to accept a position in the special research division 313 at Kiel University. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 1999 he worked short time as a medical sales representative. In order to place more emphasis on academic work he then became an academic assistant and project manager at different CROs where he was responsible for all aspects of phase I clinical trials according to GCP standard. Ali obtained his pharmacy degree PharmD in 1989 from Tabriz School of Pharmacy, Iran. Our current research is directed towards three dimensional molecular structures elucidation of selected organic compounds in the solution and/or solid state by means of chiroptical methods, circular dichroism (CD) in particular. Currently we are focusing on the structure-chiroptical properties’ relationship of classical and non-classical ß-lactam analogues, with an emphasis on carba-analogues of penicillin’s and cephalosporin’s. Special attention is devoted to the stereostructure determination of transparent molecules. For this purpose, we developed a methodology which uses various complexes with two transition metal atoms linked together by a single or multiple bond of general formula M2(OCOR)4, with M = Mo, Rh, Ru or Re. These achiral complexes act as auxiliary chromophores. After the exchange of achiral ligands of the stock complex for different types of chiral ligands, e.g., amino acids, glycols, aminols, diamines, alcohols, amines, etc., optically active complexes are formed. CD of these complexes can easily be measured and used for the correlation between signs of Cotton effects (CEs) obtained and the structure of investigated compounds.

In addition to efficacy, factors critical for development of a successful drug candidate include good drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic (DMPK) properties along with minimal toxicity. Generally, inferior DMPK properties result in poor absorption, high clearance and have been attributed to the failure of oral drugs during the clinical development. In addition, potential of drug interactions or their inadequate understanding can complicate successful drug development. The prediction of human pharmacokinetics and metabolism of drugs is critical to advance the right compounds into clinical settings. Though, use of in vitro data to extrapolate in vivo has aided the effort allowing for prediction of pharmacokinetic parameters, with our current understanding, the translation to a clinical outcome is far from accurate. I hope to build a research program that is aimed at improving our understanding and prediction of DMPK properties of drugs using in silico and in vitro tools. Specifically my research will be focused on understanding mechanisms of CYP mediated drug-drug interactions (DDIs); pharmacokinetic modeling of CYP-dependent DDIs; in vitro-in vivo correlations of drug clearance and drug interaction and the effect of CYP polymorphisms on drug clearance.

I gained my PhD in organic chemistry at Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003, studying structure and function of plant polysaccharides. Then I was a post-doctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, in Dr Saul Roseman’s laboratory, the first laboratory to determine fine structure of sialic acid. In 2005, I continued my post-doctoral training followed by serving as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, at Dr. Dennis L.Kasper’s laboratory where I have published two first-authored papers with good citations,one PNAS in 2008 and another Cell hostµbe in 2010. On my return to China in 2011, I was employed as a professor and set up my own laboratory at College of Science, Northwest A&F University. In 2011, I was honored as one of Shaanxi One-Hundred Talents and in 2012, I joined in the “Interdisciplinary Cooperation Team” Program for Science and Technology Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Owing to a strong research background of formulation development and evaluation of dosage forms and novel drug delivery systems, I have an inclination to continue my research in the field of nanotechnology targeted towards providing preventive and therapeutic solutions for cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality, I believe utilizing immunotherapy and preparing vaccines against it, which can either be used prophylactically or therapeutically will provide a potential solution. Particulate delivery systems are unique in their nature as they provide a broad range of applications based on their size and composition. My research involves usage of such particulate delivery systems as a carrier for various cancer antigens. Having dealt with formulation optimization of such particulate systems in past, my research will build on exploring various types of vaccines which can be formulated in such micro/nano particles. Another aspect of my research is the route of administration for such vaccines. The route of administration plays a vital role in induction of immune response against any disease model and to study it further to develop a patient compliant vaccine is part my research goals. My research lab at Wegmans School of Pharmacy is well equipped and is open for any collaboration in the field of oncology and immunology.

In my laboratory I supervise graduate students for Ph.D and for M.Sc. thesis and the recent ongoing projects related to these fields include:
1. My lab is interested in structure - function studies of Thyrotropin (TSH); identifying protein regions which are determinants for hormone specific post-translational modifications and receptor binding/biologic activity, using site-directed mutagenesis, gene fusion and mutant cell lines. Using the molecular biology techniques I will try to study the role of oligosaccharides in the structure and function of thyrotropin (TSH). This may expand our understanding in the role of oligosaccharides in the hormone function and may lead to the development of new agonists and antagonists.
2. My lab is interested in identification of pre-apoptotic factors and characterization of their molecular pathways in human cancer cells. Recently we have concentrated in indole-derivatives, derivatives that are exist in cruciferous vegetables, natural antioxidants, medicinal plants and medicinal mushrooms. The main goal of these studies is to elucidate such a novel and powerful natural compounds that can be used as an adjuvant nutritional therapy in preventing or a delaying the progression of cancer. The efficacy of these compounds will be tested in vitro using human cancer cells and in vivo using animal models. Moreover, the molecular mechanism of action of these factors will be studied in the cells using CHIP DNA analysis. These studies may lead to better understanding the biology of human cancer and may lead to the development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of human cancer.
3. The role of hormones in cancer development; studying the role of the indolic melatonin hormone in prevention of breast and prostate cancer. Over the last 120 years, increased exposure of humans to light at night imposed a long photoperiod of about 16-18 hours of light all year long, thus contributing to a of 'loss-of-seasonality'. Recent studies have linked disruption of normal circadian rhythms, via exposure to LAN, to the development of cancer. The indolic hormone melatonin (MLT) , considered as the universal regulator of biological rhythms, was found to have oncostatic and anti-proliferative effects in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Additionally, low levels of MLT may indirectly act to increase cancer risk by modulating the secretion of hormones implicated in carcinogenesis. In the current research we will determine the impact of 'loss-of-seasonality' due to long term exposure to light at night, experienced by the majority of people in the industrialized world, on the development of breast and prostate cancer in animal models. Moreover, the impact of MLT on the uptake of chemotherapeutic drugs (e.g. tamoxifen) administered during the day or night will be examined. Taken together, the results of our studies are expected to facilitate the formulation of guidelines regarding sensible use of illumination that will minimize the current risks associated with LAN without compromising our ability to work and live in a safe environment.

Biography :

Currently Dr. Jyothy John is a bioequivalence reviewer at US Food and Drug Administration. (USFDA). Jyothy received her B.S. in Pharmacy and M.S. in Pharmaceutics from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, India. She earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Texas Southern University (TSU), Houston, TX. Her Ph.D. study focused on ‘Effect of drug-drug and drug-herbal interactions on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of warfarin". Jyothy's research work has been published in several journals, including the Journal of Bioequivalence & Bioavailability, British Journal of Pharmacology, Journal of Chromatography B, International Journal of Nanomedicine and a book chapter in Intech Open Access. She is a co-inventor of two U.S. patents on pharmaceutical formulations. She then pursued post-doctoral training on an NIH funded project entitled “Development of a Novel Nanoconstruct Based Photothermal Therapy for Tumor Hypoxia” at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at TSU in collaboration with University of Texas at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. Jyothy is a registered pharmacist (RPh) and has taught both PharmD and PhD courses at the College of Pharmacy at TSU.

He has represented India in several world congress in Anesthesiology and Critical Care. He has published more than fifty research articles and reviews in high impact international journals including Anesthesiology (Journal of American Society of Anesthesiology). He is in the Editorial board of several journals and Editor of Translational Biomedicine, Insight of Blood Pressure, Journal of Neurosurgery, and Interventional Cardiology. He has won several international and National awards like Janak Mehta National Award for best paper in Cardiac Anesthesiology, B Braun Scholar of the year (2012), ESOP Scholarship (NWAC 2013) and presented papers and lectures in several National and International conferences. He is also a Poet and Writer of international repute with poetry published in several international Journals.

Biography :

Dr. Satyanarayana Goda, currently working as a Product Development Scientist at Formurex, Inc. He has over 15 years’ experience in pre-clinical and Formulation development, specializing in development of oral and topical dosage forms. He has vast experience in characterization of new chemical entities (NCE’S) for early stage dosage form development, preparation of Nano particles, spray dried powders, solubility screening, Bio-availability enhancement, granulation and fluid bed drying, Compression using rotary tablet press, coating, stability studies, scale up, and tech transfer etc. Dr. Goda received Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2011 from Texas Tech School of Pharmacy, Amarillo, TX. Before coming to US in 2006, he earned Bachelor and Masters in Pharmacy from Kakatiya University, Warangal, India. During his Ph.D, he worked on several projects, specializing in improving drug delivery to the brain by novel bio-conjugate systems [Paclitaxel-angiopep conjugate (Ang 1005) and doxorubicin-angiopep conjugate (Ang 1007)], neuropharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, role of transporters at the blood brain barrier (BBB) in normal and disease states, developed and validated LC-MS/MS (Varian Inc.) method for loop diuretics, anti-cancer drugs in various matrices i.e. brain, plasma, and CSF, tumors; In vitro transport assays using MDCK cell lines, efflux studies, protein binding, in-situ brain perfusion method, animal handling and their surgeries etc. During his M.S in Pharmacology, developed clinical pharmacokinetic mathematical and mechanistic models for gentamicin in Indian pediatric patients using NONMEM and also Therapeutic drug monitoring of anti-epileptic drugs i.e. carbamazepine, valproate, phenytoin, phenobarbital etc. using HPLC. Dr.Goda has presented and published in the area of drug delivery to brain, brain ischemia and brain tumors in various national and international platforms and won many accolades. He has been serving as an Editor for Global Journal of Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, guest editor for Genetic evolution of Cancer, reviewer for various reputed Journals like Experts Opinion on Drug Delivery, Controlled Drug Delivery, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, Journal of Bioavailability and Bio equivalence, Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology, Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical Practice, Abstract screener for AAPS annual meetings. He is a member of American association of pharmaceutical scientists (AAPS), society for neuroscience (SFN) and International blood-brain barrier society (IBBS). Within AAPS, he is a member of Formulation Design and Development (FDD), Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism (PPD and Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research (CPTR) sections.
