Biography :

Prabir K. Mandal, is a full Professor of Biology at Edward Waters College. He earned a Ph.D. in Genetics. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Louisville with Drs. Russell A. Prough and Barbara J. Clark.
 
He serves as the Activity Director of Title-III for the STEM area (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) and the Chair of Institutional Review Board. He serves as the member of the Editorial Board of a few journals of international repute. He serves as the Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on “Molecular Biomarkers: Tools in Medicine” of the international journal BioMed Research International. He is also involved in editing a book on Dioxin which will be published by Springer. He has recently been recognized as one of the 31 researchers by the Department of Health, State of Florida. He has been awarded with President’s IDEAL FACULTY AWARD for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, service, adhering to policy and for taking initiative to advance the college through program development. Recently, he has been awarded with Distinguished Faculty of the Year. Also, he has been awarded with Travel grants to attend Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students at San Jose, CA and CHAAMP conference at Washington, DC.

He has more than 50 research papers in peer-reviewed journals of international repute. He has been awarded with several state and federal grants including Florida Sea Grant (twice), Florida Department of Health and National Institute of Health. His research paper on DIOXIN was downloaded for the highest number of times among the scientific communities consecutively in 2010 and 2011. Also the paper was cited for the highest number of times in 2012. He is a member of the Faculty Affairs Committee of Edward Waters College. He is an active member of the Research Advisory Council of Florida State Health Diversity Research. In recent years, he has published several editorial and research papers on African-American Health issues.

During his tenure at EWC, Dr. Mandal is involved in curriculum reform, mentoring and spearheading new initiatives for Allied Health education. As a Liaison, he has made two DUAL DEGREE articulation agreements between Life University and EWC and Palmer College of Chiropractic and EWC.
 
Outside the academic and professional arena, he is also very active socially. He is the president of Bengali Association of North Florida, Science Bee Coordinator of North South Foundation, Executive Committee member of Indian Cultural Society, and also United Bengali Society of Florida.

Biography :

Dr. Banerjee has a host of mentors who have influenced his development as a scientist and a person. He has been fortunate to have worked with a number of prominent scientists and researchers, including his Ph.D. advisor Dr. S. Dutta, an “excellent mentor” who continues to teach and conduct research at the age of 80; Dr. Lawrence DeLucas, the Director of the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, who supported Banerjee and taught him to write grants in his lab, and with whom Banerjee continues to collaborate with today; and Dr. Günter Blobel, a Nobel prizewinner for his discoveries in the field of hereditary genetics, with whom Banerjee worked at Rockefeller University. “He inspired me a lot and still does,” Banerjee notes. Banerjee was also inspired and influenced by several other people, including Dr. S. Das at the University of Calcutta, his master’s advisor Paul Bullen, and Dr. Ronald Blackmon, now the vice chancellor at ECSU. Banerjee has received some additional inspiration from within his own family: his father-in-law, Dr. B. MookherJee, is a pioneering chemist who developed the patented “living flower technology”.

The field of environmental science as researchers and activists,” he says. “Environmental hazards affect us all, but most especially minorities…they affect us in agriculture, fishing and other areas. Current calamities are due to environmental change. We’re responsible for neglecting the environment, and the results that occur. Biography :

Dr. Koulen has a broad background in neuroscience, with specific training and expertise in key research areas. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research and Yale University School of Medicine, he carried out immunochemistry, electrophysiology and pharmacology research leading to seminal discoveries in neuronal signaling pathways. At the University of North Texas, he expanded his research to include drug development and drug target discovery for neurodegenerative disorders including retinal neurodegeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, animal model and diagnostics development. As PI or co-Investigator on several previous university-, foundation- and NIH-funded grants, he laid the groundwork for research developing effective measures of neuroprotection relevant to advancing technology in electrophysiology, imaging, pharmacology, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and translational research and established and supervised productive core facilities and large multi-user equipment projects. In addition, he successfully administered multiple research projects (e.g. staffing, research protections, budget) some of which had been and still are multi-center programmatic in nature, collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project.

Dr Md Enamul Hoque is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials & Manufacturing Engineering and served as Head for the Bioengineering Research Group at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (major in Bioengineering) from NUS, Singapore in 2007. He has been intensively involved in numerous research projects that are collaborated locally and internationally. His research has been funded by quite a number of funding bodies including Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Nottingham University intercampus research fund etc. He has graduated 3 PhD Students and currently supervising 5 PhD students in collaboration with some local as well as global academics/researchers. So far, he has applied for 2 Malaysian patents out of his research innovations, authored 3 books, edited 2 books and co-authored 7 book chapters. He has also published about 120 technical papers in high impact referred journals and international conference proceedings. Dr. Henggui Zhang is Professor of Biological Physics. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematical Cardiology from the University of Leeds in 1994. Then he worked as postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1994-1995) and the University of Leeds(1996-2000), and then senior research fellow at the University of Leeds(2000-2001). In October 2001, he moved to UMIST to take up a lectureship. From then, he worked as lecturer (2001-2004; UMIST), senior lecturer (2004-2006) and Reader (2006-2009) in the University of Manchester. Frank Alexis studied in Montpellier (France) at the Technological University of Montpellier where he completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry and M.S. in Materials Science and Interfaces. His Ph.D. studies on drug eluting biodegradable stents were carried at the School of Material Sciences of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He completed a postdoctoral training at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore on gene delivery. After finishing his postdoctoral training in Singapore, he joined MIT and the Brigham and Women Hospital to work with Institute Professor Robert Langer and Dr Omid Farokhzad, respectively. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the laboratory of Dr. Omid Farokhzad and Research Affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2006 to 2009 in the laboratory of Prof. Robert Langer, he developed multiple nanoparticle technologies including targeted nanoparticles for cancer therapy, oral drug delivery, and vaccines. In 2009, he joined the Bioengineering Department at Clemson University as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Alexis’ research interests are related to biomaterials, tissue engineering, and nanotechnology. Antibodies are polypeptide complexes produced by B-lymphocytes of the immune system that identify and neutralize pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses. Antibodies are comprised of immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy (IgH) and light (IgL) chain polypeptides. Each polypeptide has an N-terminal variable region that facilitates its binding to antigen, whereas the C-terminal constant region of the IgH chain is necessary for downstream effector functions. There are three DNA alteration events that allow mammalian B lymphocytes to achieve enormous antibody diversification: V(D)J recombination, class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation. Developing B cells, in the bone marrow, undergo V(D)J recombination to assemble exons encoding the IgH and IgL variable (V) regions upstream of the corresponding constant region exons.

Dr. Darren completed his PhD on intracellular trafficking in eukaryotes with Professor Mark Field at Imperial College. As a joint research fellow at Cambridge University and Kings College London, he used cell engineering to improve the bioprocessing of retroviral gene therapy vectors, working with Professor Nigel Slater and Professor Farzin Faraneh. He have 10 years ′post-doctoral research experience specialising in physics applied to biology at the single molecule level. Associate Professor Munish Puri is an established leader in the field of Industrial biotechnology and working as Group head bioprocessing at Centre for Biotechnology (BioDeakin), Deakin University, Australia. He has contributed towards the development of protein biotechnology processes with respect to the use of industrial proteins/enzymes. Soon after he joined Aeritalia-Alenia Aeronautics (the major Aerospace company in Italy) as researcher to develop applied research in Optical Non-Destructive Testing of carbon fiber materials. Dr. Saleh spent his postdoctoral training at the University of Arkansas were he was recognized as the Outstanding Postdoctoral Associate Award of the Department of Food Science, University of Arkansas, for the year 2009 for his development of a method for quantifying the effect of nighttime air temperature during reproductive stages on grain quality. Dr. Saleh has more than 22 refereed publications in the area of physical properties of food, dairy processing and the development of functional foods. Has extensive experience in relating food physicochemical properties including textures, viscoelastic and sensory properties to food end use functionality.

My overall research interest’s focuses on studying physicochemical characteristics of food in relation to its end used functional and nutritional properties. I am also interested in leading the development of non-destructive technologies such as near infrared and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for predicting foods functional properties as well as microbial activities.

Dealing with grain products, I am very aware of the importance and the economic outcome of using food byproducts for food and non-food applications. Therefore, one of my research interests is to investigate the extraction of potential merit nutritional ingredients for potential food and non-food applications. Texture and solubility enhancers, thickening agents and packaging materials are some examples of such applications. I believe that improving productivity and investigating renewable sources for food and non-food applications are fruitful areas of research.

I am also interested in evaluating secondary byproducts as potential use of biodegradable polymers made from renewable resources for energy and biobased ingredient and applications. Secondary byproducts could be the play key role in improving quality. I believe that improving productivity and investigating renewable energy sources would guarantee vigorous and successful research. Therefore, my long term goal is to encompass food quality assessment of sustainable production practices in terms of processing and end-use quality in addition to processing performance, such as energy efficiency and water use.
