Biography :

Dr. Burgis was trained in the fields of DNA repair and toxicology.  He earned his Ph.D. from The University at Albany, S.U.N.Y. and his post-doctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His current research interests focus on understanding mechanisms of nucleotide metabolism and toxicology. His lab is currently investigating the mechanism of substrate specificity and catalysis of ITPase; a key enzyme important for the exclusion of noncanonical purines from nucleic acid precursor pools.  By studying the human ITPase, and orthologs in other organisms, his lab aims to contribute to the fields of cardiovascular development, purine metabolism, cancer development, drug metabolism and bioterrorism. Dr. Burgis’ currently serves on the American Chemical Society Biochemistry Examination Committee.  His research program is supported by funding from the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.

Tel: 440-141-330-5258

Biography :

Dr Watson’s first degree was in Applied Physics, followed by a PhD from the Engineering Faculty at the University of Glasgow in “Optimising the gaseous discharge and optical coupling of a pulsed CO2 laser” which was specifically designed for material processing of reflective and refractory materials. In the early 1990s he began to research the effects of high power laser beams on microorganisms and laser sterilization and inactivation. He has published on the direct effect of a range of lasers and their efficacy on treating different substrates, including solids, liquids and air and a range of microorganisms from E. coli to B. globigii, an anthrax simulant. As well as building lasers and laser scanning inactivation systems he has developed combined systems for decontamination and inactivation applications. These systems comprised: lasers, UV, pulsed flashlamp systems, microwave and chemical treatments. Laser and plasma systems have been specifically designed, fabricated and and successfully tested for treating air.

 Biography
Research Interest :

Dr. Ian Watson is interested in how new decontamination systems and processes can lead to a safer environment and reduce the threat of food contamination and poisoning; and how the treatments can improve shelf life and food quality. As a part of this process, real time detection of microorganisms plays a role in process optimisation.

Biography :

Graduated with a Ph.D. (Molecular & Cellular Biology) from Tulane University in New Orleans and a M.D. from Shanghai Medical University in Shanghai, Dr. WeiwenDeng is a renowned researcher in mesenchymal stem cell biology and clinical application. He demonstrated for the first time that intravenous administration of mesenchymal stem cells genetically modified to secrete extracellular superoxide dismutase improved survival in irradiated mice. He published his results in the prestigious Blood journal in 2009 and meanwhile filed patent applications in U.S.A., European Union, Israel, and India.Dr. Deng’s novel therapeutic method will probably become the world first effective stem cell-based gene therapy countermeasure against nuclear terrorism, nuclear accident, nuclear war, cancer radiation therapy-induced normal tissue injury, and health risks of radiation during space travel.
