3. Chemoprevention of Cancer by natural products: These studies are focused on the role of lipid peroxidation in the mechanisms of cancer prevention and cell killing by sulforaphane, curcumin and Withaferin A.

I was recruited as a tenure track assistant professor to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2007, I established a novel research effort regarding the molecular mechanism of heart failure with a specific focus on redox signaling. Over the past 8 years, my laboratory demonstrated that Nrf2, a key transcriptional factor of antioxidant defense is a negative regulator of cardiac maladaptive remodeling and dysfunction. This research has indicated that targeting Nrf2 holds the promise for the treatment of cardiac disease. In addition, my laboratory has demonstrated that deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) such as CYLD serve as a novel group of regulators in cardiac remodeling and dysfunction.

I have studied the signaling pathways mediating the effects of high levels of NaCl (hypertonicity) in cell culture and the kidney medulla, which is normally exposed to a hypertonic environment for more than a decade. Recent discovery of the critical roles of high levels of NaCl in inducing Th17 cell polarization and high salt diet in exacerbation of multiple sclerosis and its animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) has attracted me to study how salt contributes to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and EAE, which may lead to novel therapeutics for treatment of multiple sclerosis. This project has been funded by a grant from the national multiple sclerosis society.

Bipradeb Singha Currently I am working as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Cancer Center of The Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology, Philadelphia.  In 2015, I got my PhD in Biological Sciences from St. John’s University, NY where I have analyzed the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of pro-inflammatory chemokines in ovarian cancer and determined an effective combination therapy for the treatment of chemotherapy resistant ovarian cancer. Prior to that, I completed my M.S and M.Phil in biology from St. John’s University in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Before I came to the US in 2010 to pursue my graduate studies in biology, I completed my Bachelors in Pharmacy, from West Bengal University of Technology, India. To this date, I have authored 6 papers in different peer reviewed journals along with several national and international posters at several scientific conferences. I have also received the highly competitive doctoral/post doctoral travel award grant from ASBMB (American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) in 2014. He is also Director of the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office. He completed his BA (magna cum laude) in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University (1985). He received his PhD in Immunology from Harvard University (1991) and his MD (magna cum laude) from Harvard Medical School (1992). He performed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts, General Hospital, and his fellowship in Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He was a recipient of the Friends Fellowship of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the MD Anderson Cancer Center Physician-Scientist Award, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for Physicians, and the American College of Rheumatology Outstanding Medical Student Achievement Award.  He has published 90 peer-reviewed articles, has authored 9 book chapters, and was the Editor-in-Chief of a review book on T-cell lymphomas. He has served as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals.  His pioneering work on the surface antigen CD26/Dipeptidyl peptidase IV has resulted in the development of a novel anti-CD26 antibody which is currently in clinical development.

Dr. Almeida-Porada was born and raised in Portugal. She received her medical degree in 1986 from the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of University of Porto, Portugal. She completed her residency and fellowship in Hematology/Transfusion Medicine at University Hospital of Santo Antonio, and obtained her Ph.D. in Pathology from ICBAS in 1995. These ligands activate PPARg, a ligand-inducible nuclear transcription factor that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of lung carcinoma. Another important area of investigation relates to that of tobacco, which is the most important risk factor for the development of lung carcinoma in the world. Currently, he is working as a Research Associate in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Biography :

Ting Chen was born in Nanjing, China on February 19, 1980. He earned a B.S. in Bio-pharmaceutics at Nanjing University, China in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Nanjing University, China with the Best Thesis Award of Jiangsu Province in 2007. During his Ph.D. Dr. Chen published five papers in the top toxicology and biochemistry journals during his Ph.D. career including some very prestigious journals in the world. His research has been reported in Chinese University Technology Transfer and other major Chinese national media. Due to his significant contributions, Dr. Chen has received the national prestigious award of “Hewlett-Packard Distinguished Chinese Student Scholarship” in 2005. Dr. Chen began his academic career as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School. Now he is studying and developing high throughput screens platform for anti-cancer chemicals and siRNAs. His researches have been published in Circulation and Nature Chemical Biology.

Developing a new class of anti-cancer therapeutics and to understand mechanisms by which N,N-diarylureas inhibit cancer cell proliferation in vitro growth of mammary tumors in vivo. Current interests are in the XBP-1 splicing mediated ER-stress pathway and its application in small molecule and siRNA screens.
