Biography :

Dr. Liming Dai joined Case Western Reserve University in fall 2009 as the Kent Hale Smith Professor in the Case School of Engineering. Dr. Dai received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Zhejiang University in 1983 and a doctorate in chemistry from the Australian National University in 1991. He accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in physics from the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, and two years later became a visiting follow in the department of materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Dai spent 10 years with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization CSIRO in Australia, where he built a world-renowned research team in nanomaterials. Before joining the Case Western Reserve University, he was an associate professor of polymer engineering at the University of Akron March, 2002-August, 2004 and the Wright Brothers Institute Endowed Chair Professor of Nanomaterials at the University of Dayton August, 2004-2009.

He is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Nanomanufacturing (Inderscience) and Journal of Nanoenginering and Nanomanufacturing (American Scientific Publishers) and serves as an Associate Editor for Reviews in Advance Sciences and Engineering (American Scientific Publishers). Dr. Azad is the recipient of the NASA Tech Brief’s Nano50 Award in 2007, University of Toledo’s Outstanding Faculty Researcher Award in 2009 and College of Engineering’s Faculty Excellence Award in 2010. Dr. Debjyoti Banerjee received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1999. Currently he is appointed as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and as a Faculty Fellow at the Mary Kay O Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University. He has successfully completed his Administrative responsibilities as the Manager of Fluidics and Device Engineering Group in the Advanced Research and Technology (ART) division at Applied Biosystems Inc. (ABI)/Applera Corporation (currently called Life Technologies). At ABI he was a hiring manager and managed of group of 10-15 PhD engineers with product development focus for home-based medical diagnostics devices aimed towards the consumer markets - involving MEMS, micro/nano-fluidics and nano/bio-technologies. Prior to ABI, in a singular capacity, Dr. Banerjee developed from concept to a commercial product at NanoInk Inc. (called “InkWells™). Inkwells are micro/nano-fluidics platforms used for bio/nano-manufacturing applications (e.g., nano-patterning of peptides/proteins and nucleic acids/DNA). In 1989, Dr. Karl J. Hale was appointed to a Senior Scientist position within the Medicinal Chemistry Division of F. Hoffmann-La Roche in Nutley, New Jersey, USA, at that time led by the dynamic medicinal chemist, Dr Manfred Weigele. One year later, in 1990, he returned to the UK to take up a Lectureship in Organic Chemistry at UCL, being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995 and full Professor of Chemistry in January 1998.Whilst at UCL, with the very able help of Dr Soraya Manaviazar, Professor Hale set up the UCL Centre for Chemical Genomics. In July 2007, Professor Hale took up the new Chair in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the Queen’s University of Belfast QUB within the School of Chemistry Chemical Engineering. At the same time he was also appointed to the newly established QUB Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. In addition to his teaching, research and managerial duties within Queen’s, Professor Hale serves as one of the Associate Editors of the high-profile American Chemical Society journal Organic Letters which has now emerged as the leading communications journal for publishing top-class synthetic organic chemistry research. He is efficiently assisted in his Editorial duties by his long-time organic chemistry collaborator and colleague, Dr Soraya Manaviazar .

He has done his M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, INDIA, Thesis: Modeling surfactant microstructure and phase behavior in Dianionic Systems, validated using initial lab derived data (Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering, Cryo TEM, DSC etc.).
