Biography :

Dr. Anindita Das did her graduate, post-graduation and her PhD in Science in India. Dr. Das immigrated to the U.S. in 1998 as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Radiation Biology. She established the important role of early growth response-1 protein in the regulation of radiation-induced growth suppression and apoptosis (programmed cell death) of prostate cancer cells. She continued her postdoctoral research at Ohio State University, before joining VCU in 2001 as a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and then in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology. Dr. Das was appointed Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology, in 2007. She brings extensive knowledge and experience to the cardiovascular basic research labs. Dr. Das’s major area of research is the investigation and development of novel pharmacological and genetic therapeutic approaches to reduce injury in the heart following myocardial ischemia (heart attacks). Her research goal is to study the molecular signaling pathways by which pharmacological preconditioning protects the heart following ischemia-reperfusion injury. She first investigated that Viagra (sildenafil), Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, can empower the myocytes (heart cells) to cope with the damaging effects following a severe heart attack. Her work in this area has resulted in a Beginning Grant-in-Aid from the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, to investigate the Essential Role of Protein Kinase G in Sildenafil-induced Cardioprotection. The study is designed to demonstrate that there is a direct cause and effect relationship of protein kinase G and the cardioprotective effect of sildenafil in isolated mouse heart and in ventricular myocytes. The putative role of downstream signaling targets activated by sildenafil is also to be determined.

Focus of research My field of research is aging, bone related diseases and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). As we know, all of these disorders are the major cause of the top mortality in the World. The goal of my research is to demonstrate the molecular mechanisms of the above diseases. I will briefly describe some of my research interest, contributions and give an outlook on my research plans. 1. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα, β, γ) are transcription factors that regulate varying cellular processes including lipid and glucose homeostasis. Both PPARα and β are expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells, adipose tissue, macrophages. The activation of PPARα and β exhibits inhibiting the release of inflammatory factors. Based on these backgrounds, I am interested in the effect of PPAR in physiology of vascular cells (smooth muscle cells) and arthrosclerosis. 2. Aging mediates the significant variation of cells. I have found the aging significantly changed epicardial fat function in rat. This variation has been also found to be involved in the mediation of circulating cytokines in rats. Based on this finding, I work on the effect of aging on the heart through epicardial fat. 3. Smooth muscle cells’ modulation is an important mechanism in vascular diseases. I found ADAR1, NEDD8 are the major causes in this process. These discoveries attract my interest on the epigenetic and post-transcriptional studies in smooth muscle cells’ modulation. 4. Osteoporosis and bone cancer are also common in human. I have discovered the importance of bone sialoprotein and bone vascularization in the diseases of bone. These studies have been published in very high journals. Motivation The motivation for my choosing of medical studying is that the diseases are still the threatening for human health. Most of the diseases are still not known by the people. Moreover, the CVDs are still the NO.1 killer of the human. For that reason, I would like to work in the basic medical research to conquer these diseases. Moreover, I also would like to share the research discoveries with my peers and improve the education for the people how to prevent the diseases and enhance their health. For these above reasons, I would like to serve our journal as the editor.

Biography :

I\\m a SENIOR SCIENTIST whose research focused on vascular biology and immunopathology of atherosclerosis and atherosclerosis-like lesions following SOLID ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION and PREGNANCY.

I have a broad background in PATHOLOGY and IMMUNOPATHOLOGY.

My career is mainly dedicated to understanding the role of COAGULATION, CELL ACTIVATION and INFLAMMATION in the development of atherosclerosis-like lesions: the principal cause of long-term transplant rejection and the principal arterial vascular lesion in abnormal pregnancies (PREECLAMPSIA, INTRAUTERINE GROWTH RETARDATION/RESTRICTION).

I am a pioneer in studies related to the detection of early BIOMARKERS of coagulation and endothelial activation/inflammation for CARDIAC ALLOGRAFT VASCULOPATHY (CAV), the transplant-associated form of ATHEROSCLEROSIS.

My investigations have led to changes in the criteria used by the ISHLT to evaluate ANTIBODY-MEDIATED REJECTION (AMR).

As a result of all my studies, I have published numerous peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals like NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, Circulation, Nature Clinical Practice Cardiovascular Medicine, Blood, American Journal of Cardiology and American Journal of Medicine, among others.

Additionally, I have collaborated with numerous investigators throughout my career.

I\\m a good WRITER, REVIEWER and PUBLIC SPEAKER.

I have demonstrated a solid record of accomplishing numerous research projects in areas of PLACENTAL RESEARCH and HEART TRANSPLANTATION RESEARCH.

My investigations impact an area of high relevance for the heart transplant population—an area recently recognized by a NHLBI working group as a key area for cardiac transplantation research.
