Biography :

Perry joined the UTSA faculty in 2006 from Case Western Reserve University where he was Professor of Pathology and Neurosciences and Chair of the Department of Pathology. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer′s disease researchers with over 900 publications, one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in neuroscience and behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research.

Perry has been cited over 50,000 times and is recognized as an ISI highly cited researcher. Perry is editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimer′s Disease. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the Microscopy Society of America, and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists, as well as a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives.

Perry is recognized internationally for his work. He is a Foreign Correspondent Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences and Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

Research Interest :

Our studies are focused on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. We have shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer disease. We are working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals. Our current studies focus on (i) the mechanism for RNA-based redox metal binding; (ii) the consequences of RNA oxidation on protein synthesis rate and fidelity; (iii) the role of redox active metals in mediating prooxidant and antioxidant properties; (iv) the signal transduction pathways altered in Alzheimer disease that allow neurons to evade apoptosis; and (v) mechanism of phosphorylation control of oxidative damage to neurofilament proteins.

I am an experimental and diagnostic musculoskeletal pathologist whose research interest for nearly three decades has been a blend of basic and translational investigations.  This work has been extramurally funded by the NIH, DOD, and private philanthropic agencies and foundations. Over the last 15 years I have focused my experimental work principally in cancer gene therapy using human neoplasms as the model system.  Further, I have participated in multiple gene therapy studies utilizing a variety of distinct strategies including mutation compensation, genetic immunopotentiation, and molecular chemotherapy. My most recently funded NIH grant has as its objective the goal of testing the ability of novel armed conditionally replicating adenoviruses to block breast cancer metastasis to bone and to explore the mechanisms underlying this process.  Additionally, I have had many decades long work with animal models of human disease.  I have also served since its inception as the Principal Investigator  of the Histomorphometry and Molecular Analysis Core in the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease.

The central theme of Gary Stein’s research has been to discover mechanisms controlling proliferation and differentiation emphasizing compromised regulation linked with disease.  His lab characterizes transcriptional regulation that mediates cell cycle control, focusing on molecular mechanisms regulating gene expression at the G1/S phase transition in normal and tumor cells and the abbreviated pluripotent cell cycle in human embryonic stem cells.  He has a major commitment to investigating bone tissue specific gene expression, including microRNA-mediated control, within the context of skeletal development and bone remodeling as well as aberrations that accompany the onset and progression of skeletal disease.  The Stein lab is defining functional relationships between the subnuclear organization of regulatory proteins and gene expression, pursuing mechanisms that support combinatorial organization and assembly of regulatory machinery in nuclear microenvironments and epigenetic control of cell fate and lineage commitment in biological control and cancer.

Thorsten Kirsch, Ph.D., is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Cell Biology. In addition, he is Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center. Dr, Kirsch joined NYU School of Medicine in 2008 coming from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was a Professor and Director of Orthopaedic Research. Dr. Kirsch studies mechanisms regulating skeletal cell differentiation during development and pathology. Dr. Kirsch tests the hypothesis that mechanisms regulating skeletal cell differentiation during development inappropriately recur during pathology leading to tissue destruction. In addition, Dr. Kirsch studies mechanisms that regulate physiological and pathological calcification of skeletal tissues and other soft tissues. Dr. Kirsch earned his Ph.D. from the Albrecht-Ludwig-University, Erlangen, Germany with summa cum laude in 1992, and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of South Carolina and University of Pennsylvania.

Brandwein-Gensler was born in New York, where she attended college. She received her medical degree from Upstate Medical College in Syracuse, NY. She was a Resident in Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, NY, and completed a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She was member of the pathology faculty at Mount Sinai Medical Center 1990 - 2004, and then Professor of Pathology and Otolaryngology, and Section Head of Head and Neck Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY 2004 - 2009. She is past president of the North American Society for Head and Neck Pathology. Her textbook, Head and Neck has been published as part of the Cambridge Press Illustrated Surgical Pathology series. Dr Brandwein-Gensler heads the Surgical Pathology Section at the Division of Anatomic Pathology, Department of Pathology.

Ching Lin, PhD received his Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine at the National Taiwan University. After completing his residency training and obtaining a license to practice veterinary medicine, he taught a medical microbiology laboratory course at the School of Medicine of the National Taiwan University. He was then awarded a scholarship in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Program at the University of Iowa and was trained as a bacteriophage geneticist in the Department of Microbiology. After receiving a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Lin joined the Department of Molecular Carciogenesis as a Research Scientist at the Linus Pauling Institute of Medicine in Palo Alto, California. He went on to become a Senior Scientist at the California Institute for Medical Research in San Jose, California. Although his initial interest in ATP was firmly in the realm of basic science, in recent years Professor Burnstock has worked with medical researchers and industry to help ensure that his discovery can be developed to medical treatment. When he first suggested that ATP was a neurotransmitter, the idea was met with scepticism, largely because ATP is so ubiquitous in body systems that people found it difficult to accept that it had a neurotransmitter function. But now, the very prevalence of ATP as an extracellular signalling molecule is what makes this discovery so exciting for biomedical research, because it affects most body systems.

Professor Diana Anderson currently holds the Established Chair of the Division of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bradford, UK. She obtained her first degree in the University of Wales and second degrees in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manchester. After tutoring at the University of Sydney, Australia, she became a research worker in the Department of Cancer Studies at the University of Leeds and at the Paterson Laboratories, Christie Hospital, Manchester. In 1974, she was appointed as Head of Mutagenesis Studies at ICI’s Central Toxicology Laboratory. Professor Anderson joined BIBRA International in 1981 as Head of Genetic and Reproductive Toxicology and became Assistant Director and Group Forum Co-ordinator in 1987. In 1992, she became Senior Associate and Co-ordinator of External Affairs at BIBRA. She has attended various management courses. She has served on the editorial board of 8 international journals, has over 345 publications, has edited/authored 8 books and guest-edited 9 special issues of 4 international journals. She is Series Editor of books in Current Toxicology for John Wiley and Sons and Issues in Toxicology for the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is an active Committee member and has been Vice-President of the Institute of Biology. She has successfully supervised 16 PhD, 2 MPhil and 2 MSc students and is currently supervising another 4 PhDs. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Milan in 1984 and obtained his Board in Neurology in 1989. In 1990 he obtained a clinical position at the Department of Neurology of the S. Gerardo Hospital in Monza. Since 2001 he is also Professor of Human Anatomy at the School of Medicine of the University of Milan-Bicocca, where he is the coordinator of the PhD program in Neuroscience and head of the Experimental Neurology Unit. He was born at Senigallia (AN, Italy) in 1958; he obtained a Bachelor in Sciences degree in 1977 from the High School “Corinaldesi” of Senigallia, and his Doctor of Biological Sciences degree cum Laude in 1982 from the University of Urbino (PU, Italy), with an experimental thesis entitled "Clinical biochemistry of human breast cyst fluids" performed in the labs of the Institute of Histology and Laboratory Analysis of the Faculty of Sciences. He worked as contract researcher in the same Institute and learned several biomedical technologies, in order to study structural and enzymatic proteins in breast cyst fluids needle-aspirated from healthy and diseased women affected by gross cystic breast disease. In his Ph.D. thesis he reported the characterization of several bio-molecular markers identifying women at higher breast cancer risk. Successively, he appointed as Researcher in the field of cellular and clinical biochemistry of breast secretions, characterizing both nipple aspirate and breast cyst fluids through biochemical and morphological approaches; he corroborated the potential clinical interest of breast secretion protein analyses and identified subsets of women at risk for subsequent breast cancer through the bio-molecular characterization of Type II NAFs.

Richie Soong is a Senior Principal Investigator in the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) and a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Borislav Alexiev was born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria. He earned his M.D. from Medical University of Sofia in 1984. For extraordinary abilities in cancer research, he was granted the status of citizenship in the USA.


Dr. Alexiev completed a Pathology Residency Program at the Department of Pathology, University of Maryland Medical Center, and a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the Department of Pathology, Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is certified in anatomical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Alexiev also served as assistant professor at the Department of Pathology, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and is currently assistant professor at the Department of Pathology, University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Alexiev’s research projects have included studies in fine needle aspiration cytology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy of primary and metastatic breast carcinomas and neuroendocrine tumors. In my group we are interested in the role of autophagy in health and disease. Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved catabolic process that involves the degradation of cytoplasmic material through the lysosomal pathway. Autophagy is a cellular response in nutrient starvation but it is also responsible for the removal of aggregated proteins, damaged organelles and developmental remodeling. Recent studies have shown that dysfunction in autophagy has been implicated in an increasing number of diseases from bacterial and viral infections to cancer and more recently in neurodegeneration and other ageing-related diseases. Interestingly, it has been shown that induction of autophagy can increase longevity in multiple animal species. Although it was initially believed that autophagy occurs randomly inside the cell, during the last years there is growing evidence that sequestration and degradation of cytoplasmic material by autophagy can be selective through receptor and adaptor proteins. It is therefore important to identify the proteins required for recognition and targeting of the various autophagic cargo for degradation and to elucidate the role of selective autophagy in normal and pathological conditions, especially at the organismal level. We are using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, as a genetically modifiable model organism to investigate the mechanisms of autophagy in the context of the physiology of the cell, the system and the living organism. We have developed several molecular markers for monitoring autophagy in vivo.

He is the President of Pancreatic Cancer Institute of Fudan University and Secretary of Chinese Association for Anti-Pancreatic Cancer Committee since 2010. Dr. Yu’s major goal is to develop a new therapy for pancreatic cancer and deliver the best care to the patients with pancreatic cancer through the basic and clinical research. 1. Surgical: The aim of Prof. Yu and his team is to optimize the technology of pancreaticojejunostomy to reduce the postoperative pancreatic fistula rate. We have conducted a phase III prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trials: Nonstented Stump-closed vs Duct-to-Mucosa Pancreaticojejunostomy After Pancreaticoduodenectomy to compare the postoperative pancreatic fistula rate and some clinical data as postoperative hospital stay, anastomosis time, reoperation rate, morbidity and mortality, which has been registered in ClinicalTrials.org (NCT01731821). Estimated enrollment: 308, current: 160.

2. Radiotherapy: Prof. Yu and his team have conducted an international initiative process called LC(laparoscopy)+IORT(intraoperative radiotheray)+EBRT(external beam radiation therapy) to treat the unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer patients since 2010, which is minimal invasive and benefit for postoperative recovery of patients, furthermore, it may contribute to prevent the patients to recieve insufficient dose from traditional radiation.

3. Chemotherapy: Prof. Yu and his team have participated in the clinical experiment to evaluate the efficiency between Gemcitabine, S1 and S1 plus gemcitabine to treat unresectable pancreatic cancer, and experiment using Abraxane (Paclitaxel with albumin bound) plus gemcitabine to treat patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

4. Molecular Biology: Prof. Yu and his team devote themselves to the research of pancreatic cancer in many aspects, including the mechanism of invasion and metastasis of pancreatic cancer, the mechanism of lymph node metastasis of pancreatic cancer, his major goal is to develop a new therapy for pancreatic cancer and deliver the best care to the patients with pancreatic cancer through the basic and clinical research.

Dr. Kims expertise and knowledge in human molecular genetics focus on positional cloning of disease genes using patients with chromosomal aberrations. As a geneticist studying chromosome rearrangements, such as balanced translocation/inversion and deletion/duplication for disease gene discovery for the last 14 years, He seek out collaborations to recruit additional subjects with related phenotypes for mutation analysis and to develop corroborative evidence for causative nucleotide alterations in a variety of model systems. For the last 7 years here at Georgia Regents University, He had established the Developmental Gene Discovery Project (DGDP) aimed at defining genes of neurodevelopmental importance by their disruption in subjects with ultra-microdeletions and ultra-microduplications encompassing only few genes. The DGDP project enrolled subjects based upon their having a chromosome rearrangements in conjunction with any abnormal phenotype. Currently our focus is to identify new genes involved in intellectual disability, autism, speech delay, dyslexia, Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), DiGeorge Syndrome II, and delayed puberty.

You-lin Qiao, MD, PhD, professor and Director for Department of Cancer Epidemiology, National Cancer Center, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College Beijing, China. Before returning back to China in 1997, he was training for 11 years at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and Cancer Prevention Studies Branch, NCI/NIH, USA. He is also director of International Collaboration Department, Cancer Foundation of China, and Deputy Director of the MOH National Expert Committee for Cancer Screening and Prevention in China. He is an author on over 480 peer reviewed publications in both English and Chinese. As an expert in cancer prevention and control, he served as WHO Director-General’s Cancer Control Advisory Committee and WHO’s Cancer Technical Advisory Groups for helping to promote cancer prevention and control programs in developing countries. He is involved in many national and international projects to study etiology, primary intervention, and early detection of a variety of cancers through multidisciplinary and global collaborations. Different from animals’ somatic adaptive immune system, the plant immune system includes many elements that are unique to plants. It is fascinating to study the molecular basis of plant disease resistance. Different types of pathogens have been found to be able to deliver an arsenal of virulence molecules called effectors into host intercellular space or cytoplasm to promote pathogenesis. Some effectors can be recognized by host resistance proteins and trigger host resistance; however, some effectors are capable of manipulating host metabolisms and leading to host susceptibility. Currently, one of the hottest areas in effector studies is to characterize the virulence of effectors and reveal the molecular connections between effector triggered resistance and susceptibility. The plant disease I have been working with is potato late blight. Potato late blight, caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most destructive plant diseases. Nowadays the most frequently used management strategy to control late blight is to spray fungicides repeatedly, which is expensive and causes environmental concerns. Therefore, the best way to control the disease is through natural host resistance. The RB gene, cloned from the diploid wild potato species Solanum bulbocastanum, confers partial resistance to most P. infestans isolates through its recognition of the corresponding pathogen effector family IPI-O. IPI-O is a multigene family of effectors. While the majority of IPI-O proteins are recognized by RB to elicit host resistance (e.g. IPI-O1, IPI-O2), some family members are able to elude detection (e.g. IPI-O4). We found IPI-O4 blocks recognition of IPI-O1, leading to inactivation of RB-mediated resistance. Currently we are working on the diversity and modification of the RB protein, with the hope to identify naturally occurring or engineered variants of RB that can recognize more IPI-O effectors or cannot be suppressed by IPI-O effectors.
