Dr. Robert Vanarsdall is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine where he has been teaching full-time for over 40 years. He served as Lt. in the US Navy as a line officer from 1962 through 1965. He received his dental degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his post-doctoral specialty training at the University of Pennsylvania and is board certified in both Orthodontics and Periodontics. Dr. Vanarsdall served as Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and has directed Orthodontics at Penn since February 1981. He also serves as Director of the Division of Advanced Dental Education at Penn. In addition to his teaching commitment, he maintains a private practice. For 17 years he served as Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Adult Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery

Biography :

Professor Bing Song graduated from China Medical University and achieved MD in 1995, and achieved MSc in 1998. He visited Hamamatsu University School of Medicine Japan between 1997 and 1999 as a visiting scholar, during which time he received scientific training in Photo Medical Research Centre. Professor Song joined Professors Colin McCaig and Min Zhao’s lab at School of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, UK in 1999 as a postdoc research fellow, and achieved his PhD in 2004. In 2005, he was awarded a prestigious Royal Society University Research Fellowship for 8 years, and promoted to senior lecturer in 2007. In 2009, Professor Song joined School of Dentistry, Cardiff University, UK as a chair, and expanded his research topics to stem cells replacement therapy in treating central nervous system diseases.

Research Interest :

Professor Song’s research interests are focused on physiological electric signals controlled cell behaviours including directed cell migration, oriented cell division and targeted differentiation during wound healing and neurogenesis. He has been actively investigating signalling pathways, molecules and genes in the regulation of such events. One of his research projects is concerning the neural stem cells replacement therapy in the treatment of spinal cord injury using multi-disciplinary approaches coordinating with nanotechnology. His team is also trying to characterize dental pulp stem cells derived neuronal cells as alternative replacement therapy cell resource.

Dr. Sompop Bencharit is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, School of Dentistry and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) He received his DDS in 1994 and Clinical Diploma in Prosthodontics in 1996 from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand He earned his Certificate and Master Degree in Prosthodontics in 1999, a PhD in Oral Biology in 2003. and a Certificate in Clinical Research in 2008 from UNC. Dr Bencharit is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is one of a very few clinicianscientists who are both boardcertified dental specialists and PhD scientists. He serves as a reviewer for over ten international scientific and dental journals.

Dr. Bencharit is a protein structural biologist specializing in protein X-ray crystallography. He has his research interests in structural biology and its applications to human diseases in particular the role of signaling proteins involved in vessel and bone development. Her current research mainly includes the clinical applications of structural biology and mass spectrometry proteomics. His main laboratory goals include (1) structural and functional studies of cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM), a genetic disorder resulting in vascular defects in the brain causing hemorrhagic stroke; (2) salivary proteomic analysis and biomarker discovery for diabetes and HIV-related diseases, and (3) biology of bone regeneration and implant dentistry.

Dr. Cemil Yesilsoy is a native of Turkey where he obtained a D.D.S. degree from Ankara School of Dentistry. He earned a D.M.D. from Temple University and in 1982 completed his training in Endodontics at the University of Minnesota with a certificate and a M.S. degree. Dr. Yesilsoy has been a faculty member in the endodontology department since 1992. He is currently Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Pre-doctoral Endodontology Department in addition to being the Director of the Undergraduate Clinic. As a faculty member, Dr. Yesilsoy also directs several courses in the endodontic department. He has authored numerous articles in endodontics and lectures to dental organizations here and abroad. Biography :

After completing his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the State University of New York Downstate Kings County Hospital Center in 1974 he taught and practiced the fullscope of the specialty at Washington University St Louis Missouri. He became board certified in 1978, He came to Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1981 to continue his academic career as director of undergraduate oral and maxillofacial surgery and have held that position for 30 years. Funded research includes the areas of implant dentistry and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Other areas investigated are clinical issues of bacterimia resulting from suture removal effects of third molar surgery on gingival and plaque indicies and pain relief for localized osteitis. He received training in microsurgery in 2009 and have since limited his clinical practice to managing peripheral trigeminal nerve injuries. He is presently engaged in active clinical research in the field of traumatic trigeminal nerve injury.

Chung H Kau is Chairman and Professor at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Alabama Birmingham. He received a DDS degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil (UFMG), a MS degree from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Bauru, Brazil and his PhD from the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP), Araraquara, Brazil. Dr. Pimenta also is Certificate in Restorative Dentistry/Oral Rehabilitation and practiced full-time with emphasis in preventive, restorative, and esthetic dentistry. Professor Stephen Richmond Born in Liverpool, gained dental degree in Sheffield (1979) followed by an orthodontic specialist training qualification in Cardiff (1984). Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the University of Manchester (1985 – 1993) and attained doctorate in relation to quantifying orthodontic treatment need and outcome (standards) in the General Dental Services in England and Wales. Moved back to Cardiff in 1993 and currently Head of Applied Clinical Research and Public Health. Best known for developing and implementing the use of the PAR, IOTN and ICON indices and assessing the cost-effectiveness of orthodontic treatment. Recently studies have focused on three-dimensional facial growth and growth prediction (12-17 yr olds) in different population groups and the influence of environment and genetics on face shape. Recent research grants exceed $3 million supported by over 200 publications.

Facial Pain lead consultant at EDH since April 2007, Hon. Professor at UCL. After obtaining dental ( King's College London) and medical (University of Cambridge ) degrees and specialist training in oral medicine Joanna gained an MD in trigeminal neuralgia and a personal chair in facial pain. She held an academic post at the dental school at Queen Mary, London for 10 years before moving to her present post. Joanna was the first non-anaesthetist to become a member of the Faculty of Pain Medicine. She has written four books and contributed chapter to 15 books, and written over 100 peer-reviewed papers, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally.

Dr. Yoshihisa Yamashita is a Chairman at Section of Preventive and Public Health Dentistry ,Division of Oral Health Growth and Development, Kyushu University Faculty of Dental Science. He received his DDS 1982 and PhD 1986 in Dentistry from Kyushu Dental College. The thema of his thesis is alkaline phosphatase in mammal. He worked in the project of cariogenic bacteria with Prof Tadamichi Takehara in Department of Preventive Dentistry Kyushu Dental College from 1987 to 1993. During this period he had postdoc experience in the Howard Kuramitsu laboratory at Texas University Health Science Center at San Antonio for two years and learned genetic recombination technique. In 1993 he took a position of Associate Professor in Kyushu University and in 2000 he became a Chairman of Department of Oral Health Science in Nihon University. Finally in 2003 he moved to Kyushu University and took the present position. Now he is interested in relationship between oral health status and general health and is progressing research projects involving both bench work of molecular biology and epidemiology.

Mutlu Özcan is a Professor and Head of Dental Materials Unit in University of Zurich, Switzerland. She did her Licenciate in Dentistry from Marmar University Istanbul in 1993. She completed her Doctorate in Medical Sciences from University of Groningen, Netherlands. She has authored more than 200 scientific and clinical articles in peer-reviewed journals, has given over 400 presentations at international scientific meetings, is a frequent lecturer at scientific meetings, receiver of several international awards and has held numerous continuing education courses in Europe. Dr. Juan Martin Palomo is the Director of Orthodontics and the director of the Craniofacial Imaging Center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio, USA. Dr. Palomo has presented both nationally and internationally and authored several peerreviewed publications on the topic of informatics and craniofacial imaging. Dr Palomo’s career contributions to craniofacial imaging have been recognized through research awards in both medical and dental fields. Dr. Palomo has been member of the IADR for over 10 years and he strives to bring craniofacial biology to the forefront of the community at large as he is the primary advisor for the Medical Imaging Exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center. Lakshmyya Kesavalu was born on February 28 1945 in Asanambut village Tamil Nadu state, India. But he grew up in village later moved to Gudiyatham Vellore for middle high school and college until 1965. He is the first generation in the village and in the family to enter for college education. He was especially interested in sociology and medicine. Parents spouse sacrifice and encouragement drove him to excel his studies and career After his professional Veterinary Medicine degree in 1971and later specialized in Medical Microbiology and Immunology in Premier Medical Institution in 1978 All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi. He moved to USA “The Land of Opportunity” for postdoctoral fellowship in 1986. He was blessed with caring spouse and two daughters After 3 years of mycobacteriology research at Denver Colorado moved to new fascinating area of dental research Periodontal disease pathogenesis at University of Texas at San Antonio in 1989 and later at University of Kentucky in 2000. Major research interests are to examine the role of several periodontal pathogens specifically Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, and Fusobacterium nucleatum in the initiation of infection, inflammation, immunity, gene expression, alveolar bone resorption, and progression of periodontal disease. Recently, studying the association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease (Clinical study) and investigating the role of these pathogens as polymicrobial infection in induction of both periodontal disease and atherosclerosis (basic study). Currently, studies initiated to examine the role of major periodontal pathogens in the development of both Alzheimer’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Research Interest :

Dr. Alastair Sloan research interests within the field of mineralised connective tissues, focussing on the reparative potential of these tissues originated from my doctoral studies at the University of Birmingham. During his PhD he established an in vitro organ culture model for human and rodent dental tissues. This provided a novel and innovative model for studying the biological behaviour of these tissues over extended periods of time.

Biography :

Andrew Smith qualified BDS from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1987. After a short spell in general dental practice, he took a position as a Senior House Officer and Research Assistant at Cardiff Dental Hospital and subsequently awarded funding from the Welsh Office to undertake a PhD investigating the microbial degradation of periodontal proteoglycans which was awarded in 1994.
In 1993 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Adult Dental Care, University of Glasgow Dental Hospital during which time he gained the FDS examination from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. In 1995 he was appointed Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Microbiology training at the Oral Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory in Glasgow Dental Hospital and the Microbiology Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
In March 2000 he was awarded the MRCPath in Microbiology from the Royal College of Pathologists and promoted to Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and Honorary Consultant in Microbiology NHS Glasgow & Clyde. In May 2005 he past the advanced course in sterilization technology (ACIST) run by the Institute of healthcare engineers and estate managers and is a pre-registered Authorised Person (sterilizers).
In January 2005 he was appointed the Head of  the Diagnostic Oral Microbiology laboratory (the only CPA accredited oral microbiology laboratory in the UK) and is also the lead Microbiology Consultant for Decontamination in NHS Glasgow & Clyde. He is also co-author of two text books, several book chapters and over 60 peer reviewed publications. Prof Smith sits on several local and national committee's overviewing  the decontamination of medical devices.
