Biography :

Dr. Dale Johnson is an Adjunct Professor of Molecular Toxicology at UC Berkeley where he teaches Computational Toxicology, Principles of Drug Action, and lectures in Pharmacogenomics. He has had previous academic appointments at University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, and St. John’s University. He is also currently President & CEO of Emiliem, Inc. a start-up biotech company in California and Michigan. He has over 30 years experience in biopharmaceutical research and development activities where he has led and managed small units in start-up companies to multi-national groups in large corporations. He has participated in the research and development of over 100 investigational molecules of which 15 have become marketed medicinal products in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and is co-inventor on 6 issued patents. He received BS, Pharm.D, and Ph.D (Toxicology). degrees from the University of Michigan where he was an AFPE Fellow. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT). Dr. Johnson is the co-author of over 100 published papers, abstracts, and book chapters; was journal co-editor of The Chemistry of Metabolic and Toxicological Processes section of Current Opinion in Drug Discovery & Development; is the Special Issue Editor of Advances in Computational Toxicology, International Journal of Molecular Science; and is on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Wiley book series on Technologies for the Pharmaceutical Industry. He is a member of the Green Ribbon Science Panel for the state of California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control and is a member of scientific advisory boards for privately held companies. His current research activities are focused on creating and rolling out a comprehensive infrastructure designed to support all relevant and available chemical-toxicity resources, extend to various model systems and “omics” data sets, and be applicable to human health from chemical exposures and to early and late stage drug research and development. He is an active member of AAAS, American Chemical Society, and the Society of Toxicology.

John S. Markowitz is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research within the University of Florida (UF) College of Pharmacy. John received his Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in microbiology from Memphis State University, and his Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences. He completed a specialty residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice, also at the University of Tennessee. In addition, he has been credentialed by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties in Psychiatric Pharmacy since 1997. Following his training, John served for a number of years as a hospital-based Clinical Specialist in Psychiatry within the Institute of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina. He eventually entered into a primary faculty research position in the MUSC College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Sciences with a dual appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where he had remained prior to joining UF in 2009.

Dr. Markowitz research program has encompassed both in vitro and in vivo investigations including normal volunteer pharmacokinetic studies directed at the assessment of drug-drug interactions in psychopharmacology, botanical-drug interactions, as well as their associated clinical effects. More recently, the research program has focused on variability in drug metabolism, disposition, and therapeutic response as a consequence of genetic variability which influences both drug transporters and hepatic enzymes. He has received research support from both the pharmaceutical industry and the National Institutes of Health.

Biography :

I have lead a successful basic and clinical research programs in the areas clinical neuroscience and stress related disorders, funded by the NIH since 1989. The basic work focuses on the role of neurotransmitter and limbic pathway abnormalities that could lead to stress and psychiatric disorders and has more recently extended these studies to the discovery of new treatments. I also directed the Clinical Neuroscience Research Center (NCRC) at Indiana University School of Medicine from 1997 to 2007. Our group at the NCRC has conducted studies in healthy and disease populations, utilizing physiology and brain imaging methods. I hold several Investigational New Drug applications and discovery patents, and conducted many pharmacokinetic, pharmacogenetics, phase I and phase II studies of novel compounds in the treatment of schizophrenia, anxiety, and mood disorders. I have published over 140 original scientific papers in leading basic and clinical journals. A number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, private foundations, and commercial collaborations have supported my research.

The main focus of my laboratory is to examine the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis, angiogenesis and metastasis, and develop novel drugs for the treatment and prevention of various cancers.

We have used biochemical, molecular and transgenic animal approaches to identify novel death receptor agonists. These small molecules bind to death receptors and induce apoptosis in cancer cells, while sparing normal cells.  Inhibition of survival pathways have been shown to enhance the therapeutic potential of death receptor agonists.

Dr. Steven R. Myers is currently Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Myers research focuses on the development and utilization of biological markers of environmental carcinogen exposure, particularly in smokers and non-smokers. Dr. Myers research undertakes a variety of experiments to assess exposure of human populations to both environmental tobacco smoke as well as other sources of environmental contaminants that potentially can cause developmental, gestational, and postnatal disease. The research of Dr. Myers gains insightful information as to the levels of compounds exposed to individuals, as well as the developing fetus. Through his work in dealing with fetal exposure to tobacco carcinogens during pregnancy, new revelations have been found as to the potential harmful effects of environmental as well as tobacco related carcinogens on the developing fetus. These studies are continuing in coordination with several area hospitals and work is currently investigating relationships between individual carcinogens found in tobacco with specific alterations in enzymes in the mother and in the neonate as well as both DNA and protein damage. Other areas of investigation and Dr. Myers laboratory includes development and application of biomarkers of exposure to environmental carcinogens in a variety of areas of the United States in conjunction with the United States Environmental Protection Agency as well as in studies carried out in the Czech Republic as well as in China, both of these areas being some the most polluted areas in the world. A new area of investigation currently under study is the application and utility of breast milk as a biomarker of exposure to a variety of carcinogens resulting from mothers smoking during pregnancy. This area of research will yield exciting new information as to the postnatal effects of tobacco carcinogens on the infant as a consequence of breast feeding.

Current studies include (a) the mechanisms by which hormones regulate expression of cytochrome P450 enzymes, (b) the effects of exposure to specific drugs and xenobiotics on cytochrome P450-mediated activities and protein levels, (c) analysis of structure-activity relationships for the various toxic effects of organochlorine compounds, (d) analysis of CYP-mediated biotransformation of organochlorine compounds, and (e) hepatic metabolism of bile acids and the influence of hepatic bile acid levels on cytochrome P450 enzymes.

Identifying the physiological function, regulation and clinical significance of ABC transporters and, Understanding the significance of protein-protein interactions to the intracellular trafficking and functional activity of these multi domain transport machineries. We complement our cell culture studies with whole animal studies to put our finding at the cellular level in the context of the whole animal. Dr. Santosh Kumar has received his PhD in Biotechnology from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Currently, he is working as an Associate professor in College of Pharmacy, University of Tennessee Health Science Center. His research has included HIV-1, substance abuse, especially alcohol and tobacco, drug metabolism, and cytochrome P450. Based on this research and fellowship training he has received several awards and honors, such as Post-doctoral best paper award from ASPET. Based on his outstanding teaching and mentoring he has received “Teacher of the year award”. He is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals, as well as ad-hoc member of NIH study section. He have authored >50 peer-reviewed research articles/book chapters. He is a member of several professional society, as well as, he is the chair of “Early career investigator committee” in the Society of neuroimmune pharmacology.

Jason Matthews received his B.Sc. Degree in Toxicology and Environmental Science from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Michael Zhou is currently Senior Director of Medpace Bioanalytical Laboratories with Medpace, Inc. (a Clinical Research Organization). His most recent positions were Senior Associate at Lachman Consultants and Senior Director of Global R&D at Bioanalytical Systems and Director of Bioanalytical Chemistry/DMPK at Synta Pharmaceuticals Corporation. He previously held positions at DuPont, Purdue Pharma LP, Johnson & Johnson, Cardinal Health, and Scynexis with increasing responsibilities for analytical, bioanalytical and DMPK R&D in support of drug/product R&D and clinical/ manufacturing programs.
His career has focused on analytical and bioanalytical R&D and CMC plus DMPK programs for over 20 years, with expertise in regulatory compliance such as GLP, GCP, GCLP, cGMP regulations (or GxPs), EMA, ICH, AMV and BMV guidelines, along with USP standards and ISO certification. During his career tenure, he has gone through a few FDA audits with great success. He has worked on resolving regulatory compliance issues (FDA Warning Letters and Consent Decrees) with great credentials. He has managed and built excellent quality systems (GxPs) with Six Sigma process excellence and Lean operation. He has gained a great deal of experiences in management (functional and operational aspects), technical and regulatory compliance expertise since 1988. He has been actively involved in organizing conferences, speaking at presentations and sharing his knowledge at workshops for numerous national and international proceedings as Keynote Speakers, Invited Speakers, workshop and short course leaders.
He serves as a member of scientific steering committees for PBA and NABF, and is a member of AAPS, ACS, ASMS and AACR. He authored over 40 research articles and 2 book chapters in the areas of analytical/bioanalytical chemistry. He is a peer-reviewer for several renowned technical journals including J. AOAC International, J. Analytical Chemistry, J. PBA, and J. Chromatogr. B, etc. He serves as an Editorial Board Member for “Bioanalysis,” edited by Future Science Group of London, UK. He was retained by John Wiley and Sons (a world renowned scientific publisher) for a book entitled “Regulated Bioanalytical Laboratories: Technical and Regulatory Aspects from Global Perspectives” (published in Jan 2011). Dr. Nan Mei is a Senior Research Biologist in the Division of Genetic and Molecular Toxicology at the U. S. FDA National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR). He received his M.D. in 1984 from Hebei Medical University, China and earned his Ph.D. degree in 1997 at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan. He has published 58 peer-reviewed research articles in prestigious journals, including The FASEB Journal, Nature Biotechnology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, British Journal of Cancer, Cancer Letters, Toxicological Sciences, Toxicology in Vitro, Chemical Research in Toxicology, Mutation Research, Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, and BMC Bioinformatics. He was author of 7 book chapters. He is a member of the Society of Toxicology and the Environmental Mutagen Society. He served as a reviewer of many peer-reviewed journals in the area of genetic toxicology and toxicogenomics. He received many awards including the 2007 FDA Scientific Achievement Award.

Currently he focuses his research on genetic toxicology and toxicogenomics. He utilizes the in vivo and in vitro mutation assays to evaluate a number of high-priority chemicals for their mutagenicity and to determine the mechanisms of chemical-induced genetic toxicity. His interests include the evaluation of the mutagenic effects of direct mutagens, botanical chemicals, herbal dietary supplements, industrial compounds, and ingredients in cosmetics and other retail products. He incorporates toxicogenomic approaches into his research to develop potential biomarkers, create gene signatures, and elucidate molecular mechanisms.

Our focus is to understand the pathophysiology of a tumor environment with the goal of designing polymeric drug carriers that can be used to optimize the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs and gene delivery systems. Additionally, combination therapies involving both chemotherapeutic drugs as well as gene delivery systems are promising treatments in the fight against cancer. Therefore, another area of our research will involve the development of therapeutic plasmids for the delivery of specific cytokine genes that are effective in eliciting strong immune responses against cancer cells in tandem with the administration of standard chemotherapeutic drugs.

Morse is a pioneer in AIDS clinical pharmacotherapy. Jurgen Borlak was a Cancer Research Campaign-founded postdoctoral research scientist and in 1990 joined the Marion Merrel Dow Research Institute in Strasbourg, France, as Principal Investigator. In 1998, he was appointed Director of the Center of Drug Research and Molecular Pharmacology at the Fraunhofer Institute of Toxicology and Experimental Medicine; the centre focuses largely on the molecular effects of drugs and xenobiotics, using a wide range of methods and technologies in cell biology, genomics and molecular biology. In 2000, Jurgen Borlak was habilitated in pharmacology and toxicology and received the venia legendi at the Medical School of Hannover. In 2002 he was appointed as Full Professor to the chair of Pharmaco- and Toxicogenomics at the Medical School of Hannover. He was also appointed as Professor of Molecular Anatomy at the Medical Faculty of the University Leipzig in 2003. Jurgen Borlak is author of 183 original publications and 25 book chapters. He is reviewer and member of the editorial board for various scientific journals. Amongst others he is member of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences and an appointed expert of the World Health Organisation.

Moein Moghimi is Professor of Nanomedicine and Head of the Nanomedicine Group at the Department of Pharmaceutics and Analytical Chemistry Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He further serves as the Director of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology and Nanotoxiocology CPNN and Group Leader in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at the NanoScience Center University of Copenhagen. Dr. Lai received his M.D from Fujian Medical University in China and his Ph.D. (Toxicology) from Sapporo Medical University in Japan in 1998. From 1998 to 2001, he was a research fellow of Japanese Society for Promotion (JSPS) in Department of Physiopathology, Graduate School of Medicine of Hokkaido University, followed by a position as Research Associate in Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Washington. In 2004, he moved to PDM, PGRD St. Louis and then Groton in 2010, Pfizer Inc. and has been serving as a PDM representative (PI) for preclinical project, postdoc supervisor and discipline leader for drug transporter. Dr. Ma’s research focuses on the role of xenobiotic nuclear receptors in drug metabolism and metabolism-mediated liver injury. Pregnane X receptor (PXR; NR1I2) is one of the most important xenobiotic nuclear receptors regulating a large network of genes including those encoding metabolic enzymes and transporters. Recent advances in mouse models, including Pxr-null, PXR-humanized, and PXR/CYP3A4 double transgenic mice, provide ideal tools for evaluating the functions of human PXR and CYP3A4 in vivo. The laboratory utilizes these genetically engineered mouse models to investigate the mechanisms of drug-induced liver injury. In addition, we are interested in identifying small molecule biomarkers of drug-induced liver injury using an LC-MS-based metabolomic approach. Specific responding biomarkers will be used for elucidating the mechanisms of drug-induced liver injury.

Metabolism, toxicity, and carcinogenicity of drugs and chemicals: Cytochromes P450 (P450) involve in metabolism of drugs and chemicals in vivo, and catalyze the inactivation or metabolic-activation of chemical carcinogens. A multi-faceted approach, including mouse model, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry is used to investigate the roles of metabolism enzymes in toxicity and
carcinogenicity. I have focused on the study of the toxicity of several drugs, including ifosfamide, cyclophophamide, thioTEPA, and procainamide, and the effect of CYP1B1 on benzo[α]pyrene using CYP1B1-null and humanized mice. Part of results has been published on Biochemical Pharmacology and British Journal of Pharmacology.
• Metabolic profiling of drug efficacy and toxicity: Xenobiotic receptors, such as peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) and farnesoid X receptor (FXR), can mediate the metabolic response of organism to the chemical environment. However, in many cases, activation of xenobiotic receptors can
lead to toxic and carcinogenic responses. The transgenic mice, including knockout and humanized mice, can be used to study the mechanism of drug efficacy and toxicity. I have worked on the effect of
PPARα and FXR on drug efficacy and toxicity. Part of results has been published in Journal of Lipid Research and Journal of Proteome Research.
• Identification of biomarkers for diseases using mass spectrometry based-metabolomics: Metabolomics using liquid and gas chromatography linked to mass spectrometers (UPLC-QTOFMS and GC-MS) as analytical platforms, is being actively used to systematically identify and quantify all metabolites in a
given organism or biological sample. The small molecule biomarkers of diseases are identified through the targeted- and untargeted-metabolomic analysis of metabolites in serum, urine and tissue homogenate. Some endogenous biomarkers of several diseases, including cancer, diabetes, liver cholestasis, and glaucoma, have been identified in my research using this technology. Part of results has been published in Journal of Biological Chemistry.

He is currently working as a Formulation Scientist at Insys Therapeutics Inc., USA, and a pharmaceutical company that develops innovative supportive care products. He has worked on National Institute of Health (NIH) and industry funded research projects. Dr. Vaishya’s work was focused on development of polymeric drug delivery systems for small molecule and biologics such as proteins and peptides. Primarily, he has developed ocular topical and injectable micelle, nanoparticle, microparticle and hydrogel formulations. His research interest also includes transporter targeted prodrug, evasion of efflux, peptide chemical stability, design of experiments and pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions. He has authored/co-authored several peer reviewed publications, patent and book chapters. Dr. Vaishya’s current research focus at Insys therapeutics involves product development of oral solution, sublingual spray and pMDIs for inhalation.

I, Rozana Oliveira Goncalves, was born in the city of Piritiba, in the interior of the state of Bahia in the year 1977. I am the daughter of Dilton Alexandrian Gonçalves and Florisvalda Oliveira Gonçalves. My marital status is single. In 1992 my family and I lived in the city of Miguel Calmon, so I studied up to the high school level there. In 1996, to continue studying, I had to separate from my family and I moved to the capital of Bahia, Salvador. In 1997, I started a course in Biological Sciences at the Catholic University of Salvador. In 2001 I began my career in research as an intern in the Laboratory of Human Genetics and Medical Maternity Climério de Oliveira. In 2006, I started a Master's degree in biotechnology and investigative medicine at Gonçalo Muniz Research Center / Fiocruz, where I also completed a doctoral program (2008-2013).
