Dr. Haroutune K. Armenian is Professor in residence at the UCLA and Professor Emeritus of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he received his MPH, and Dr.P.H. degrees (1972-4) and his M.D. from the American University of Beirut in 1968 where he has specialized in internal medicine. His career in epidemiology has spanned a number of countries and regions of the world. He is one of the earliest to apply epidemiologic methods to study the effects of the civil war at the population level during the 1980s in Lebanon, and the long-term effects of the 1988 earthquake in Armenia.  In the 1980s, he pioneered epidemiologic research by using Armenian Church parish records to study infant mortality as well as other health indicators in 16 diasporan countries over a timeframe of 300 years. More recent research includes the study of cancer within the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, and the study of psychopathology as a determinant of physical illness in Baltimore.

Dr. Armenian’s academic and development leadership has included program development at the Ministry of Health in Bahrain, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, Director of the MPH Program at the Johns Hopkins University, and Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the American University of Armenia.

Dr. Armenian is President Emeritus of the American University of Armenia (AUA). As President of the AUA for fourteen years, he was at the forefront of the establishment of novel educational and development programs in Armenia and the Middle East.

Recent awards include the Ernest Lyman Stebbins Medal for Excellence in Education and the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Movses Khorenatsi Presidential Medal of Service in 2001 from the Republic of Armenia, Presidential Medal of the Order of Cedars from the Republic of Lebanon, and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical and Delta Omega public health honorary societies.  Dr. Armenian is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London, and a member of the American Epidemiological Society. He has been on the central executive council of the Armenian Church in Lebanon as well as on the executive of the Hamazkaine Cultural Association and the Karageuzian Foundation.

Dr. Armenian has been for 15 years the Editor in Chief of Epidemiologic Reviews and on the editorial board of a number of professional journals and publications. He has published over 100 scientific papers and peer reviewed chapters as well as 20 books. He recently published two collections of his watercolors and prose-poetry in Armenian and English: Colors and Words and Past Here Does Not Yet Melt. The latter was composed while they climbed Mount Ararat in an AUA expedition led by Sona Armenian to Ararat and Western Armenia in 2006.

In 2009 he published a new textbook on the Design and Applications of the Case-Control Method at Oxford University Press, and became the supervisor of the Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health at the King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In Armenia, he continues to lead the Turpanjian Rural Development Program with over 160 businesses established in the villages and 500 people trained in entrepreneurship.

Biography :

Pam Factor-Litvak, PhD is Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. She is a life course epidemiologist with special interests in environmental exposures. Her current research interests concern in utero and early childhood environmental exposures to heavy metals (e.g. lead, mercury, arsenic, manganese) and endocrine disrupting compounds (e.g., PCBs, organohalogen pesticides, brominated compounds and fluoridated compounds) and developmental, growth and reproductive outcomes in late childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Most of her work utilizes birth cohorts born at particular times, in particular places. An example of this work is the Yugoslavia Study of Environmental Lead, Pregnancy, and Child Development. This is a prospective cohort of mother-infants pairs, tracking the adverse association between lead exposure, IQ, growth, renal function and cardiovascular function. A second cohort study traces the now adult offspring of women who participated in the Child Health and Development Studies to examine whether early exposures are associated with adults in the cohort to ascertain whether perinatal exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds is associated with persistent neurobehavioral problems and reproductive disorders in males. She has completed two studies initiated due to public concerns, one, a study of the possible associations between mercury derived from dental restorations (silver-mercury fillings) and neuropsychological, neurological and psychiatric symptoms in adults, and second, an ecologic study of the relations between residential proximity to hazardous waste sites and school district based special education classifications of autism. Dr. Factor-Litvak has served on numerous NIH review committees, serves on an international committee to investigate the etiology of autistic spectrum disorders, a NIEHS/CDC committee to investigate thimerosol in the etiology of autism, and on a World Health Organization expert panel on endocrine disrupting chemicals. Dr. Factor-Litvak received her PhD in epidemiology from Columbia University and Master’s degrees from both the Harvard School of Public Health and Yale University.

Dr. Pam Factor-Litvak′s current research interests concern the biological relationships between environmental exposures and development. Biography :

Dr. Mirza Shaper′s research career began in 1992, in The Aga Khan University with the identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis surface proteins that causes T cell activation and proliferation. This project was followed by Molecular Epidemiology of M tuberculosis using, Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). In the years that followed, I worked on numerous epidemiological projects including, outbreak investigations of both Dengue [1] and Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic fever viruses using serological testing [2], optimization of PCR from peripheral blood mononuclear cells for the early detection of pulmonary M. tuberculosis [3]. The last project she was involved in before leaving Pakistan was the epidemiology of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in commercial sex workers and long distance truck drivers, using urine samples. This project was what brought her to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she started working on the molecular epidemiology of transmission of tuberculosis in inmates in the correctional facilities in Alabama. While working on this project she was accepted to the Microbiology Graduate Program. Her thesis studies and subsequent postdoctoral studies have been on virulence molecules of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

After a year of post-doctoral studies she was accepted as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas-Health Sciences Center School of public Health. As a part of the Health Sciences system she was given the opportunity to work with a cohort of 2500 Mexican Americans living on the Mexico-Texas border. This population of Mexican Americans suffers from severe health disparities, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2-diabetes mellitus. It is well known that individuals with type 2 diabetes in particular uncontrolled diabetes are at a higher risk of acquiring upper-respiratory tract infections with pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and S. pneumoniae. With her vast knowledge of pneumococcal infections and her years of experience in mechanisms of pathogenesis, she set out to investigate modulations of immune responses in these participants. Currently her research focus includes investigation of immune responses in individuals with diabetes, more specifically she is investigating alterations in T cell differentiation in particular Th-17 differentiation in the cohort participants in response to stimulations by pneumococcal antigens. Additionally to complement studies on T cell differentiation and activation we also investigated the cytokine profile of individuals with diabetes and diabetes with co-morbidities such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. The work is under review for publication in Journal of Clinical Investigation and Cytokine. She would like to further explore the role of hyperglycemia on diabetes-associated inflammation and understand the mechanisms by which hyperglycemia modulates cytokine production and subsequent impairment/alterations of immune responses.
