Biography :

Dr. Paul A. Lapchak has received his PhD in Pharmacology in 1988 from McGill University (Montreal, Quebec). Currently, he is the Director of Translational Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to joining Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, while at the University of California, Dr. Lapchak advanced 2 embolic stroke models to develop new stroke treatments. He is currently serving as an editorial member of Translational Stroke Research and is an active reviewer for STROKE, Experimental Neurology, Brain Research, amongst others. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, over 40 review articles and is currently co-editing a new book entitled Translational Stroke Research: From target selection to clinical trials. He is a member of American Heart Association and the Society For Neuroscience. He has been honored as a Fellow of the American Heart Organization (FAHA) for his dedication to the translational development of novel methods to treat acute ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke and has also received a Chemical Industry Award honor.

Research Interest :

Dr. Lapchak currently directs a translational stroke research laboratory funded by a translational research grant from NINDS. Dr. Lapchak is focused on developing natural product analogs to treat ischemic stroke. Natural products derived from plants and other natural sources are an untapped resource of bioactive compounds. The emphasis is on polyphenolic compounds such as curcumin and high affinity curcumin-derivatives with novel mechanisms of action and low toxicity profiles. Moreover, his laboratory is actively engaged in studies to further the development of transcranial laser therapy to promote recovery of function following a stroke by elucidating the mechanism of action of light therapy. His laboratory is also working to develop new methods to attenuate thrombolytic-induced intracerebral hemorrhage and provide neuroprotection to hemorrhage patients.

Vasiliki E. Kalodimou is Director of the Flow Cytometry-Research and Regenerative Medicine Department at IASO Maternity-Pediatric and Research Hospital in Athens, Greece. Received her bachelor’s degree in Human Physiology and her master’s degree in Human Molecular Genetics from the Imperial College at the University of Medicine in London, UK. She completed her PhD at the University of Medicine in Athens, Greece, with an emphasis on stem cells. Since 2006, Dr. Kalodimou has studied and working with stem cells in every day practice and their applications in regenerative medicine and Flow Cytometry. Also is working in the area of human genetics. Eric J. Ley, MD is a surgeon specializing in trauma services in the Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is board certified in surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. Celia H. Chang did an internal medicine internship at Highland Hospital in Oakland and completed a neurology residency in the UC Davis East Bay Neurology Program. During the neurology residency, she decided to become a pediatric neurologist. She did an internship in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and complete her pediatric neurology training there as well. She came back to UC Davis as an Assistant Professor in 1999. She is Rotation Director for a third year Pediatric Neurology Rotation and IOR for a fourth year Child Neurology Elective. She teaches neurology and pediatrics residents, as well as child psychiatry and child development fellows.

Dr. Brian D. Berman is an Assistant Professor of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Radiology at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Aleksandra Pikula is Assistant Professor of Neurology with expertise in Vascular Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine and an Investigator at the Framingham Heart Study.
After receiving a medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Belgrade, Dr. Pikula completed a two-year residency in general medicine followed by a research position at the SHSC in Toronto. Subsequently, she completed a year of internship in medicine at the QHC- Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, residency in neurology at BUSM and two-year combined clinical and research fellowship training in vascular neurology at BUSM and at the Framingham Heart Study, when she started a program towards MSc at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Nikolaus McFarland graduated from the University of Chicago in 1992 and was elected into the Sigma Xi research society. He completed medical and graduate training at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and then went on to the University of Virginia for residency training in neurology.On completion he pursued fellowship training and research in Parkinsons and Movement Disorders atthe MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease (MIND).Hehas recently joined the Neurology Department at the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Junhua Xiao is currently NHMRC/MSRA Betty Cuthbert Fellow at Centre for Neuroscience, The University of Melbourne, Australia. She is also an honorary research fellow of Florey Neuroscience Institutes, Australia. Completing her PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2005, Junhua Xiao undertook her post-doctoral studies at Centre for Neuroscience, The University of Melbourne, where she continued her studies in cellular and molecular neuroscience with focuses upon glial cell biology. The lab is primarily interested in understanding the mechanisms that control the normal myelin development and myelin repair, aiming to identify molecules that can be targeted or modulated for the repair of human demyelinating diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. Biography :

After completing a PhD at Monash University in the department of pharmacology with Prof Bevyn Jarrott and Dr Robert Widdop in 2001, Roulston commenced post-doctoral research in stroke with Prof Jarrott and Dr Jennifer Callaway investigating the effects of AM36 on brain inflammation. Roulston was recruited to The Howard Florey Institute under the leadership of Prof Greg Dusting in July 2002 with support from Neuroscience Victoria, where she conducted commercial research evaluating the effects of novel flavonoid compounds in recovery from stroke in rats. These studies lead to the establishment of a start-up company (NeuProtect P/L) with a BIF grant making an International Patent application in 2005 and subsequent capital raising approximately $15 million to progress to Phase I clinical trial. In 2005 Roulston moved with Dusting to the O’Brien Institute where she was awarded a NHF Research Grant-in-aid to commence independent studies investigating mechanisms involved in oxidative stress after ischaemic stroke in rats.  Since this time Roulston has expanded her research to include mechanisms associated with brain recovery after stroke and was appointed team leader of the Brain Injury and Repair group at OBI in 2009.  With support from the NHMRC, Roulston has been investigating the role of free radicals in angiogenesis as well as the use of human adult stem cells for transplant after stroke in collaboration with Dr Jeremy Crook and Dr Nao Kobayashi at the Centre for Neural Tissue Engineering at the University of Melbourne.  Dr Roulston also works in collaboration with prominent scientists at the department of Biochemistry Bio21, University of Melbourne, on a project investigating the role of protein kinases in excitotoxicity after stroke.  In an Important new move Roulston has recently been accepted to join the Department of Medicine University of Melbourne (St Vincent’s hospital) under the leadership of neurologist Professor Mark Cook. In March 2013 Roulston will move her team to the department of medicine which will enable Roulston to work more closely with leading clinicians who specialize in brain injury and disease. During her career Dr Roulston has prepared 10 peer-reviewed project grant applications of which 6 were successfully funded, including an NHMRC project grant and two National Heart Foundation Grants-in-Aid. Roulston’s publications also include two invited book chapters and two invited review articles.

Born in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, Dr. Shu-Zong (Phillip) Wang graduated from Wuhan University in 1988 with BA in Biology. After that, he went to Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China for training in Biochemistry and received his Master degree in 1995. He received his PhD in Pathobiology in University of Missouri-Columbia, Missouri during the period of 1996-2004. He then worked as a postdoctor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas from 2004 to 2007. Currently, he is working as research associate at Department of Molecular, Cell and Cancer Biology in University of Massachusetts Medical School and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Based on this research and fellowship training he has received several awards and honors, such as SSR Trainee Research Award. He is serving as an expert reviewer for up to 10 journals including Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, BMC Cancer, Journal of Neurology and Neurophysiology, etc. He has authored more than 10 research articles /books.
