Biography :

Francesco Maione graduated in Pharmacy in 2005 from the University of Naples “Federico II” and trained in Pharmacology at the Department of Experimental Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmacy. During his PhD in Pharmacology (2005 to 2008) he studied the role of N-formyl-peptides (fMLF and FTM) in different models of pain and inflammation. In these studies Dr. Francesco Maione demonstrated that these endogenous (fMLF) and syntetic peptides (FTM) have a remarkable in vivo inflammatory and painful activity. Dr Maione directed his efforts on this research path even further after beginning his post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Prof. Mauro Perretti, at William Harvey Research Institute - Queen Mary University of London (2008-2010). During this time he expanded, also, his knowledge on inflammation by focusing on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and investigated the role of Annexin-1 (ANX-1) and interleukin-17A (IL-17A) in different model of inflammation. Since 2010, he joined Prof. Nicola Mascolo’s lab where he re-activated his long-term interest in natural compound biology, starting an unexplored path in the role of natural molecules in the inflammatory response and cardiovascular system. In 2013 Dr Francesco Maione obtained the Specialization in Clinical Pharmacy at University of Naples “Federico II”.

Biography :

Professor Jagat R Kanwar is the Head and team leader of Nanomedicine-Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biomedical Research (NLIMBR), School of Medicine, Faculty of Health, Deakin University, Australia. Professor Kanwar has an international reputation and expertise in investigating fundamental and applied molecular signalling aspects of pathogenesis of cancer, chronic inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases, thereby, leading to the development of treatment strategies from bench to bedside. He has more than 150 research publications in high impact factor and peer reviewed international journals, 27 book chapters and 3 edited books. Prof Kanwar’s research has generated several patents/PCTs with more than five licensed patents for commercialization to BioPharma industry. His group is currently working on drug discovery and nanomedicine for oral and systemic drug delivery of a range of natural bioactive and biomacromolecules (proteins/peptides, siRNAs and aptamers) for targeting survivin, HIF-1α and other apoptotic and inflammatory cell signalling molecules in cancer, chronic inflammation and neurodegenerative disorders. His research combines Immunology with state of the art and cutting edge techniques in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Nanobiotechnology and visualization to investigate the pathways in which key molecules are regulated in both normal and disease states. A number of in vitro human cell/tissue based co-culture models for cancers, microbial infections; autoimmune diseases; chronic inflammatory diseases (osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease), gut health, neurodegeneration and immunomodulation have been developed by his group. Kanwar’s main research objective is to understand and target the mechanisms involved at the molecular and sub cellular level which gives us an edge over the prevalent targeting techniques. He carries out both academic and commercial research projects and develops new approaches for the diagnosis, treatment, and nanomedicine based new generation delivery systems. His recent research focus on locked nucleic acid (LNA) LNA-modified aptamers conjugated "double targeted nano-bullet nanocapsules" with natural anti-tumour proteins which specifically target cancer cells.

Our nanomedicine laboratory of immunology and molecular biomedical research (NLIMBR) is discovering the novel and safe targeted nanomedicine based nano-nutraceuticals for cancers, autoimmune disorders and inflammatory diseases. We also vested the molecular diagnosis including role of a non-invasive exosomes in blood, inflammatory sites and cancer tissues. Our research focused on cancer and inflammatory autoimmune diseases aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms involved in apoptosis, autophagy and inflammation by targeting the production of cytokines, chemokines, oxygen radicals and matrix metalloproteinase. Our research also aims to investigate the nanotherapeutics encapsulating peptides, LNA modified aptamers/miRNAs/siRNA in vivo models. We have made significant progress in field of ocular drug delivery and microfluidic and Lab-on-a-Chip devices techniques for cancer cells as well as stem cell capture, disease specific biomarkers and exosomes.

Biography :

I have been working in the area of Pharmacognosy & Ethnopharmacology and am specifically working on the modeling for new drug development, taking plant and phytochemical compounds as the lead moieties. As the chances of hitting new molecules with new activities lie more in the Ethnopharmacological approach, I am choosing plants used by the ethnic community or the tribal and those reported in the traditional literature and working on the scientific validation and standardization of the plant and products based on them. My area of research include collection of herbs from the wild sources, identification, activity guided fractionation and development of scientifically validated and standardized herbal products for common ailments and Development of eco-friendly biopesticides (acaricides) for control of Tick and Tick born diseases. These extraction, isolation, purification and characterization of active markers from plants are done using sophisticated instrumentation techniques like HPLC, HPTLC, GC, UV vis, Flash and other spectroscopic techniques, biological activity are carried out by modern techniques. We have made significant contributions to Quality control of crude drugs/products, medicinal plant survey, chemotaxonomy, bioprospecting and natural product development.

He also worked as Visiting Professor on Inflammation and Cancer (including Omega-3 fatty acid and Cancer etc.) with Dr. Tong Wu, Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (2005-2007). Dr. Lim was Chair in his Department (1994-2005) and Director, Cancer Research Institute in Chungnam National University (2009-2011). Recently, he was a Chair in Autophagy Reserch Session of KSBMB (2013-2014). Dr. Lim is one of the leading scientists in the field of a research on the Omega-3 fatty acids and Cancer. He has worked to identify novel molecular mechanisms of anticancer action of omega-3 fatty acids in several cancers since 2005. For example, he found that omega-3 fatty acids inhibits wnt/beta-catenin signaling and Cox-2 (Cancer Res, 2008; Mol Cancer Ther, 2009; Pancreatology, 2011 etc.), and induces cell death through autophagy (Autophagy, 2011; BioMed Res Intl, 2013 etc.). Additionall, he found that DHA degrades HPV E6/E7 oncoprotein through Ubiquitin/proteasome activation (Cell death and Disease, 2014). He has also researched on Inflammation and Cancer, Regulation of gene expression on metastasis- and angiogenesis-related proteins. He also published several books’ chapter and reviews on Omega-3 Fatty acids and Cancer. In 2010, he organized Korea-EU International Forum on Omega-3 fatty acids and Cancer.  Biography
Research Interest :

Dr. Guoxun Chen’s long-term research interest is to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of metabolic changes associated with metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type II diabetes. Dr. Chen’s research has been focused on how endogenous lipids regulate the expression of genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. Since Dr. Chen established his independent research laboratory in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 2006, he have found that vitamin A, an essential micronutrient for human health and development, plays a role in glucose and lipid metabolism. This has led him to investigate the roles of vitamin A in the development of metabolism diseases, such as obesity and type II diabetes.
