Biography :

Dr. Hurwitz is the Executive Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He received both his undergraduate degree and medical school education from Columbia University in New York City.

He did his surgical residency at the University of Virginia, his orthopaedic residency at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital (Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center) and post-doctoral fellowships in Foot and Ankle Surgery, and Orthopaedic Trauma at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. His professional activities include affiliations with the AAOS, AOA, ORS, AOFAS, OTA and OREF. He is past president of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association and the Southeastern Fracture Consortium Foundation.

As Executive Director of the ABOS he participates in the Orthopaedic Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Hurwitz has been involved with education of orthopaedic residents since 1984 and has been active in both clinical and basic science research at George Washington University, the University of Rochester, the University of Virginia and currently with the University of North Carolina.

For seven years he was the S. Ward Casscells Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, Department of Orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Hurwitz served in the US Army and Army Reserves from 1980- 1991 and was Lieutenant Colonel upon retirement. He has written several textbook chapters, co-authored over 88 published manuscripts, edited three orthopaedic books and has received grant support for seven completed investigations. He reviews manuscripts for 13 journals, was on the visiting consulting staff of the NIH Clinical Center and is a consultant to the Department of Defense for the non-lethal weapons program. He has produced scholarly work in the field of tendon regeneration, fracture healing, automobile injuries, treatment of foot & ankle conditions, orthopaedic certification and orthopaedic resident education.

Biography :

Dr. Alan R. Hargens previously served as Chief of the Space Physiology Branch and Space Station Project Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center (1987-2000) and Consulting Professor of Human Biology at Stanford University (1988-2000).He also holds eight patents. Dr. Hargens is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Gravitational Physiology. He is the recipient of a NIH Research Career Development Award, Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Orthopaedic Research Society, Recognition Award from the American Physiology Society, and two NASA Honor Awards. He is a Board Member and Past President of the International Society of Adaptive Medicine and a winner of the Hallman Award from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Hargens is also a member of other professional societies including American Physiology Society, Orthopaedic Research Society, International Society for Gravitational Physiology, American Society of Gravitational and Space Biology, and Aerospace Medical Association. He has chaired or served on several Veteran’s Affairs, NASA, NIH, International Space Science Review and National Academy of Sciences Panels. Dr. Hargens received his undergraduate degree, Summa Cum Laude, in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. His paper regarding the effect of backpacks on children in Spine 35: 83, 2010 was the “Most-read, full-text journal article by Orthopaedists in 2010”.

His recent research concerns gravity effects on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems of humans and animals. He also investigates exercise devices to maintain astronaut health and performance in microgravity and partial gravities. This research is translated to aid post-surgical treatment and rehabilitation of orthopaedic patients and to improve performance of athletes. In addition to his research on gravitational stress, Dr. Hargens measures tissue fluid and osmotic pressures, including those in giraffes to understand how they prevent dependent edema, those in skeletal muscle to diagnose compartment syndromes, and those in intervertebral discs to help understand low back pain. Dr. Hargens has edited seven books and published more than 270 peer-reviewed articles, 47 chapters, 40 NASA Reports, and 520 abstracts in general areas of comparative physiology, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal physiology, and orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Siemionow completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery and he provides comprehensive care for adolescent and adult patients with all spinal conditions affecting the neck, spine, and back. He also received his undergraduate degree in biology from Ohio University and he earned his medical degree from Poznan Medical University. Dr. Siemionow then went on to complete a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, ranked one of the top hospitals in the nation by US News. While in Cleveland, Dr. Siemionow completed a 6 month Spine Fellowship at the C leveland Clinic Spine Institute. After completing residency, Dr. Siemionow and his family moved to Chicago. In Chicago, Dr. Siemionow completed fellowship training in Adult Spine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and a Pediatric Spine Fellowship at the Shriners Hospital for Children. Dr. Siemionow participates in an annual spine surgery mission to Uganda, East Africa, where he treats both children and adults suffering from spinal trauma, scoliosis, tumors, and infection.

Dr. Liu was awarded his doctorate in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from Shandong University and received his postdoctoral training in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University. Since 2002 Dr. Liu has held a dual appointment in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Cell Biology at New York University School of Medicine, since 2013 as Professor with tenure. He is Editor-in-Chief of Open Access Rheumatology Research and Reviews and sits on the editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Liu is recipient of the Harold M. Biography :

Yue Zhang received his PhD degree from University of Fribourg, Switzerland in 2006; he and his colleague reported deficiency of TOR kinase doubles life span in C. elegans in Nature. He did his post-doc in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and established DAF-12/Vitamin D receptor as development capacitor in C. elegans. Since 2008, first as research fellow, then promoted as instructor, he pursued cancer and Huntingtons diseases research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

In 2011, he started as senior scientist in Osteoarthritis (OA) Unit, University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre under directors professor Johanne Martel-Pelletier and professor Mohit Kapoor. His studies on the role of cartilage homeostasis mediator mTOR and autophagy pathway with patient specimens and model organisms led to novel strategy for OA prevention. Now he works as cartilage scientist in arthritis research center, Toronto Western Hospital, UHN. Recent work includes the identification of OA biomarkers in cartilage and investigation of interrelationships among obesity, OA and autophagy. Current interests include studies on roles of Vitamin D receptor as health capacitor in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatic arthritis and associated cancers. Dr. Afsie Sabokbar obtained her PhD at University of Essex in UK, in the field of Immunology in 1989. Thereafter she undertook 2 years post-doctoral training at University of Durham, UK, investigating a method by which elevated levels of TNF-alpha could be used to predict organ transplant rejection. From 1991 to 1994, she  went to University of Cambridge, UK where she became extremely interested in the bone physiology and pathology, specifically, the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved during early failure of joint replacements associated with aseptic loosening. In 1994 she started her senior post-doctoral fellowship at University of Oxford where she  studied the biology of osteoclasts in depth with regards to various pathological bone disorders.

Dr. Moataz El-Husseiny is currently working as a Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the University College London Hospitals. He is also currently undertaking an MD (Res) at UCL, which focuses on Covalently bonding proteins to titanium alloys to enhance cell growth and adhesion. Both Stanmore Implants Worldwide (SIW) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) are funding his research. Moataz graduated from Cairo University in 1999 and completed his orthopaedic residency for three year in El-Helal Hospital, the centre of excellence in Trauma and Orthopaedics, in Cairo, Egypt. Nicolas Vuillerme develops and encourages an interdisciplinary educational and research program which involves: (1) a fundamental research in the fields of Psychology, Neurosciences and Biomechanics. The aim is to investigate the interactions between sensory-motor and cognitive mechanisms involved in the control of human perceptive, spatial, postural and motor behaviours and their changes as a results of normal aging, chronic diseases, pathologies and/or accidents. This work is based on human psychophysical, behavioural and neuroimaging experimental studies and data fusion modelling human behaviour. (2) an applied research dedicated to Technologies and Services for Ageing, Health and Autonomy in the field of Information Technology Engineering Sciences. Dr. Julien Frère obtained a M.Sc. in Sports Science in 2005 and then a Ph.D. in November 2009 at the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education, University of Rouen, France. From 2007 to 2008, he trained as a Ph.D. student in international research at the Laboratory of Biomechanics and Biocalorimetry (LOB²) in Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Lucian Bogdan Solomon is an Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide and a senior Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital specialising in trauma and reconstructive surgery of the hip in knee After graduating from the Medical Univerity in Cluj/Romania in 1989 he completed the Romanian orthopaedic training program and became an orthopaedic surgeon in 1996 and in 1997 he was awarded a PhD by the Medical University of TgMures/Romania After completing fellowships in Australia Germany and the USA. He moved to Australia in 2000 and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2005. His current research interests are related to outcomes of primary and revision hip arthroplasty hip preservation surgery fracture healing and treatment of osteoporotic fracture.

I came to the Department of Engineering Science in 1998 as a Lecturer, after completing my PhD in Mathematics. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2006. My research interests are Network Optimization, Simulation and Statistical Modeling. I am a member of the Network Design and Simulation Group, inside the Operations Research Group at The University of Auckland.

I am currently involved in three research projects. The first project concerns the optimal design and simulation of Storage Area Networks, which is in collaboration with members of the Storage Systems Research Center at UC Santa Cruz. The second project is optimal knot placement (model selection) for fitting of regression splines, in collaboration with members of the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modeling at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. This work is primarily used for Environmental Impact Assessment of Engineering projects in Europe. The third project is optimization and statistical modelling for healthcare delivery, in collaboration with the ADHB, members of the Bioengineering Institute at The University of Auckland, and Surgeons at Starship Hospital and the Department of Orthopaedics, Auckland.
