"Dr. Hong-Gang Wang is the Lois High Berstler Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute at the Penn State University College of Medicine. He earned his PhD from the University of Tsukuba in Japan in 1992, and conducted his postdoctoral research in apoptosis with Dr. John Reed at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research from 1993 to 1998. He joined the Drug Discovery Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center& Research Institute as an Assistant Professor in 1998, advancing to the rank of Professor, before moving to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center in 2008. Research in the laboratory of Dr. Wang is concerned with understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that control apoptosis and autophagy in the context of oncogenesis. Drug discovery through the development of small molecules that directly target the molecular components of apoptosis and autophagy is another of the major research interests of Dr. Wang and his laboratory co-workers. Dr. Wang is considered an expert in this area of research. He is frequently asked to review manuscripts for numerous journals and to serve on government and foundation study sections. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Panel for the Biochemical Journal and theEditorial Board for The WJBCand is a permanent member of the Cancer Molecular Pathobiology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health.Dr. Wang has received numerous grants for his research from government and private funding agencies and has been continuously funded since 1998. Research in my laboratory is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms that control apoptosis and autophagy in the context of oncogenesis. Drug discovery through the development of small molecules that directly target the molecular components of apoptosis and autophagy is another major interest of our research. Apoptosis (self-killing) is the most well defined form of physiological cell death and has long been used as a synonym for programmed cell death. In contrast, autophagy (self-eating) is a lysosomal degradation pathway and is generally thought to be a cytoprotective mechanism. However, recent observations have also indicated that autophagy may contribute to cell death under certain circumstances. Although extensive crosstalk clearly exists between apoptosis and autophagy, the regulators that govern this crosstalk remain far from clear.Our recent studies suggest that the formation of an intracellular death-inducing signaling complex (iDISC) on the autophagosomal membrane is able to switch autophagy from pro-survival to pro-apoptotic signaling. Moreover, my laboratory has cloned and characterized a member of the endophilin family Bif-1, also known as endophilin B1 or SH3GLB1, as a novel Bax activator and autophagy modulator. We have demonstrated that the loss of Bif-1 not only suppressesBax-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis but also impairs autophagy.Bif-1 interacts with Beclin1 through UVRAG and regulates autophagosome formation and Atg9 trafficking possibly through the mediation of Golgi fragmentation. Importantly, the expression of Bif-1 is lost or decreased in various human cancers, and the deletion of Bif-1 promotes tumor development in mouse models. Currently, we are exploring the precise mechanisms underlying Bif-1-mediated apoptosis and autophagy to better understand how Bif-1 functions as a tumor suppressor. In addition, our group has been collaborating with medicinal chemists during the past decade for the development and characterization of novel anticancer agents such as Bcl-2 specific inhibitors.The ultimate goal of my laboratory is to translate basic science research discoveries to the development of new approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Roderick Slavcev specializes in gene therapy and biochemistry of nucleic acids with experience in both academic and industrial settings. Prior to gathering valuable marketing and clinical experience as a medical liaison for the pharmaceutical industry he completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Medical Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Toronto in the area of bacteriophage P1 plasmid partition and chromosomal segregation. His current research group comprises Mediphage Bioceuticals (MB) and encompasses pharmaceutics, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, virology and technology transfer within the ultimate aim of bringing new treatments to the global environment, especially less developed countries. MB research projects focus on bacteriophage-based biotechnology and include the use of coliphages and phage-encoded genes and genetic elements to design and construct vectors for the development of novel vaccines, biopharmaceuticals and gene therapy systems, and the identification and application of novel phage genomic anti-bacterial genes to treat and dispose of the clinical culprits of global bacterial infection.
Roderick Slavcev is an Assistant Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Waterloo, School of Pharmacy and holds the Shopper’s Drug Mart Professor of Business and Entrepreneurship Chair. Holding an MBA specialized in biopharma management and commercialization, Roderick currently directs and delivers the School of Pharmacys novel business curriculum initiative. He also created and was instrumental in designing the first Medical Microbiology Laboratory to be offered by a Canadian Pharmacy curriculum.

Dr. Josef Ozer received a doctorate in Cell Biology at Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 1992 and cloned regulatory factors that activated viral promoters. He continued eukaryotic transcriptional mechanisms as a postdoctoral fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and identified novel human general transcription factors. As a Instructor at the Wistar Institute. Dr. Ozer identified general transcription mechanisms that were conserved in yeast and human In 2000 Josef became an Assistant Professor at the Boston. University School of Medicine in the Pharmacology, Department and pursued novel nuclear biomarkers for disases of the colon in addition to investigating neuronal transcription mechanisms. In 2005 he joined Safety Assessment at Merck in West Point PA as a Research Fellow Josef contributed to the renal biomarker regulatory submission as part of the PSTC consortium and coauthored papers in the Nature Biotechnology issue dedicated to this effort in May 2010. He also represented Mercks efforts in the PSTC liver biomarker consortium and continued those efforts when joining Pfizer as a Senior Principal Scientist in 2008.

Dr. Afzal Mohammed is a Pharmacist who read for his PhD in 2005 which was followed by a Post Doctoral position working on the development of freeze dried subunit vaccines for the treatment of tuberculosis. Drug delivery to the Central Nervous System, by using nanoparticulate vectors  in particular, the research is focus on the planning, preparation, characterization and administration of Np after surface modifications. By applying in vivo pharmacological tests, personally performed by dr. Tosi, several interesting results have been reached, confirming the high potential of these systems. In particular, the Np, loaded with selected drugs or labeled with fluorescent dyes, were found to be able to cross the Blood-brain barrier, opening the study to the possibility of a non-invasive treatment of cerebral pathologies. At the same time, considering the guidelines of the European Community and FDA, a number of studies on the biodistribution of these vectors, by using fluorescent dye and HPLC/fluorimetric methodologies.

Dr. Jennifer Knaack is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Mercer University, Atlanta, GA. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Southern California, CA where she studied the structure of an intestinal drug transporter. Following her graduate studies, Dr. Knaack was a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, CA where she studied yeast metabolism using accelerator mass spectrometry. Dr. Knaack then spent four years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA where she developed novel diagnostic methods for measuring human exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents and paralytic shellfish toxins. Now at Mercer University, Dr. Knaack is establishing a laboratory for the development of novel diagnostic methods for measuring exposure to environmental and synthetic toxins. Dr. Knaack has authored more than 15 publications, one book chapter and has given numerous invited oral presentations and poster presentations.

My research interests focus on public health and human exposure to environmental and synthetic chemical toxins. For many toxins, laboratory diagnostics to confirm or quantify exposure do not exist. In these cases, clinical diagnosis of exposure is made which may be incorrect and can result in an underlying condition remaining untreated. Furthermore, the mechanism of action is unclear for many of these toxins and determining their targets and metabolites produced upon exposure will facilitate the development of novel diagnostic tests. My research projects fall into three categories: (1) determining the mechanism of action and biological targets for environmental and synthetic toxins , (2) identification and development of novel biomarkers of exposure to these toxins, and (3) development of diagnostic methods for measuring exposure to these toxins. Toxins of interest to me, including organophosphorus pesticides, paralytic shellfish toxins, and mycotoxins, are present in the environment and pose exposure threats to public health on a regular basis. For many of these toxins, known biomarkers of exposure are limited to rapidly-degrading urinary metabolites. However, these toxins often form more persistent biomarkers of exposure such as protein adducts. By identifying the mechanism of action for these compounds, novel biomarkers of exposure can be developed into diagnostic assays for clinical use. By uncovering the mechanism of action, we aim to also uncover potential drug targets that can serve as treatments for exposure. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) is rapidly becoming the standard analytical technique for clinical diagnostics and so newly developed analytical diagnostics will rely on this technology. Currently, my primary project involves paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). These toxins derive from red tide algae and bioaccumulate in shellfish. Consumption of contaminated shellfish causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) which is characterized by paresthesia, dysphagia, and dysarthria. These manifestations are common to other conditions including strokes and heart attacks making clinical diagnosis of PSP difficult. No comprehensive diagnostic methods exist to measure human exposure to all known PSTs. Furthermore, no treatments are available for PSP and victims are provided with supportive therapy only. My laboratory is developing a new LC/MS/MS diagnostic test that takes advantage of sodium channels, the biological target of PSTs, to extract toxins from urine and plasma. We are also collaborating with computational chemists to develop potential treatments for PSP that could be consumed or administered immediately following ingestion of contaminated shellfish.

Biography :

Arik Dahan is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and the School of Pharmacy, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Michigan. Dr. Dahan received his Ph.D. (2007) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan (2007-2010) with Professor Gordon L. Amidon. Dr. Dahans research interest is the integration of up-to-date molecular/cellular mechanistic investigations of drug disposition in the context of the human body. In implementing this molecular biopharmaceutical approach to ADME research, Dr. Dahan is seeking to enable mechanistic-based successful solutions to drug delivery/therapy, in challenging scenarios e.g. low-solubility, low-permeability, extensive metabolism, poor site targeting, various pathophysiological conditions, and pediatrics. He has published over 50 top-notch Journal papers, and contributed chapters to 6 books.
