Dr. Zhou is a professor in the School of Health Sciences at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology RMIT University in Australia. Having originally studied and practiced clinical medicine in China he undertook his PhD in pharmacology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and has also worked at the National University of Singapore and the Queensland University of Technology. He is currently affiliated with the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. Professor Zhou is the editor of Drug Metabolism Letters and acts as a guest editor for Current Pharmaceutical Design and Current Drug Metabolism. In addition he is an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of several other international journals including Current Drug Therapy the Open Journal of Drug Metabolism and Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management. He is a reviewer for dozens of international scientific journals including Drug Safety the International Journal of Pharmaceutics, the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, the Lancet and Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2005 he was the recipient of the Research Excellence Award at the Pharmacy Honors Day from the National University of Singapore, Department of Pharmacy. He currently has published over 220 refereed journal papers with more than 1400 citations.

Biography :

Dr. Despina Sanoudou is an Assistant Professor at the Pharmacology Department- Medical School, University of Athens. She studied Molecular Biology, obtained a PhD at the University of Cambridge, got certified in Clinical Molecular Diagnostics (American Board of Medical Genetics), and served as Instructor at the Harvard Medical School and the Children’s Hospital of Boston. Her research team focuses on the discovery of novel diagnostic and prognostic markers, the identification of novel therapeutic targets, and the evaluation of chemical compounds against cardiovascular and neuromuscular diseases. The results of this work have been published in over 70 scientific articles and book chapters, 145 oral and 170 written presentations in scientific meetings worldwide. She serves as an evaluator of research grant applications at the European Commission and other international organizations, as an Editorial Board member of 7 publishers, and as a reviewer in 20 scientific journals. Furthermore, she teaches at 9 MSc programs and has founded the first High School Outreach Program in Greece, which has hosted 2,000 students to date. Dr Sanoudou has received a series of awards including the L’Oreal-UNESCO award for Young Women in Science, an American Society of Human Genetics education award, multiple Hellenic Cardiological Society and Greek Society of Pharmacology scientific awards and others.

Dr. Jun (Luke) Huan is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Kansas. He is an affiliated member of the KU Information and Telecommunication Technology Center (ITTC), Bioinformatics Center, and Bioengineering Program. Dr. Huan received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006 (with Wei Wang, Jan Prins, and Alexander Tropsha). Before joining KU in 2006, he worked at the Argonne National Laboratory (with Ross Overbeek) and the GlaxoSmithKline plc. (with Nicolas Guex). His group won the best student paper award in 2011 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining and the best paper award (runner-up) in the ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management in 2009. Dr. Howland is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, and an Attending Psychiatrist in the Mood Disorders Treatment and Research Program at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, and completed his residency training in psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Adrián LLerena is the Director of the Clinical Research Center in the University Hospital Infanta Cristina en Badajoz Spain. He is also Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology in two Medical Schools in the University of Extremadura Spain and part time in the University of Beira Interior, Portugal. He earned his PhD at University of Extremadura in 1988 and between 1989 to 1993 did his post doc at Karolinska Institute Sweden focusing on Clinical Pharmacogenetics of antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs. His teaching experience is of more than 20 years in Spain and of about 9 years in Portugal. He has supervised more than 10 PhD thesis so far. He is also coordinating the IberoAmerican network of Pharmacogenetics since 2006. He served in different Scietific societies as IberoAmerican Society of Pharmacogenomics. He has been Principal Investigator in more than 25 national and European research projects. His research is focused on Pharmacogenetics and Clinical Pharmacology since 1986. His PhD Thesis was the first pharmacogenetic study of CYP2D6 with debrisoquine in Spain. Later, his research at Karolinska Institute during his PostDoc was focused on Clinical Pharmacogenetics of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. Similarly during his stay at UCLA, he was working in a NIH funded project about Pharmacogenetics of antidepressants in Mexican-Americans.

Dr. Mark Stein is a clinical psychologist researcher Professor and Director of the ADHD Clinical Research Program Mark Stein directs the Child and Adult ADHD Clinics and ADHD Clinical Research at the Institute of Juvenile Research at University of Illinois at Chicago where he is a Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. Previously he was Chair of Psychology at Childrens National Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry at The University of Chicago. Dr. Stein completed his internship in Child Clinical Psychology at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and received his PhD in 1982 from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for over 25 years. Dr. Stein had been an active clinical researcher studying ADHD treatments in children adolescents and adults effects of thyroid abnormalities genetics sleep problems and ADHD and most recently pharmacogenetics of ADHD. He is the author of more than 100 articles abstracts and book chapters and has co edited a text book on ADHD. He is currently conducting a NIH supported pharmacogenetic study of ADHD comparing stimulant and nonstimulant medications. His research focus is to develop computational models for personalized drug exposure prediction and its effects on drug responses. He is integrating genetic, epigenetic, environmental (i.e. drug interactions), physiological, clinical, and demographic variables into the modeling system. Extensive computational and informatics approaches are used: statistics, computational optimization, text mining, and ontology. The application of these drug exposure predictive models includes the patients population breast cancer, leukemia, autism, AIDS, and pregnant women. He is also exploring the application of this modeling system to the electronic medical records.

Dr. Wei Dai received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 1988.  Dr. Dai is currently a professor in the Departments of Environmental Medicine and Pharmacology, New York University School of Medicine. Prior to joining New York University, Dr. Dai was a faculty member (1994-2000) in the Division of Hematology-Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, a Senior Scientist (2000-2001) at the Institute For Cancer Prevention, and a Professor (2001-2006) in the Department of Medicine at New York Medical College.  In the 1990s, Dr. Dai’s research team reported the cloning and characterization of several novel human genes involved in cell division or cell cycle checkpoint control. His current research interests are focused on cell cycle regulation, mitotic checkpoint control, and the mechanisms suppressing chromosomal instability and malignant transformation during cell division. Dr. Daoud will be the Principal Investigator of this project, The goal of the proposed research is to define the epigenetic signatures of HCV disease progression to an early stage of HCC in clinical samples obtained from Egyptian patients using an integrated approach of DNA methylation and CGH array technologies. The epigenetic/genetic signatures of the identified targets could then be used as markers for prognosis and diagnosis of the disease as well as targets for new and innovative approaches to the prevention and treatment of HCC especially that a prophylactic vaccine for HCV infection is not yet available. His administrative experience as the PI of two previously funded grants in the similar areas of research SG Komen and DoD as well as his tenure as Associate Professor of Pharmacology attest to his ability to meet the administrative needs of the proposed project. His membership in the Center for Integrated Biotechnology CIB assure that the assembled team will have access to a wide range of expanding resources. Dr. Daoud is also the editor of a newly published book in an area relevant to the proposed research titled “Cancer Proteomics: From Bench to Bedside” by Humana Press 2008. Thus the current application builds logically on his prior work in the area of genomics and proteomics of cancer and he has chosen coinvestigators Drs Zekri Esmat Bahnassy Dasgupta Shaffer and Skinner to provide additional expertise needed for the success of the application. In summary Dr. Daoud has a demonstrated record of successful and productive research projects in an area of high relevance to the health of the US population and his expertise and experience has prepared him to lead the proposed project.

Dr. Krynetskiy s lab concentrates on the study of DNA damage sensors and their role in initiating apoptosis after chemotherapy. This research includes development of model experimental systems based on murine embryonic fibroblasts and different types of human cancer cell lines, generation and computational processing of gene expression and proteomic data following drug treatment. The second area of Dr. Krynetskiy s interests focuses on the role of inherited factors that modulate drug response and cause adverse drug reactions, such as genetic polymorphism of drug-metabolizing enzymes and drug targets. The ultimate goal of this study is to predict and prevent adverse reactions to drugs in genetically predisposed patients.

Dr. Xiaohua Douglas Zhang is a Senior Principal Scientist in Merck Research Laboratories. He is a fellow in the American Statistical Association and an elected member of International Statistical Institute. He established/managed a biostatistics team supporting projects in basic research, drug discovery, safety assessment, clinical pharmacology, experimental medicine, modeling and simulation, and clinical biomarkers in China and mentored junior staff and summer interns in USA. He got his Ph.D. in statistics from Carnegie-Mellon University, an MS in Genetics and a BS in Biology from Beijing Normal University. He has taught many statistical courses internally in Merck and multiple courses externally, as a guest lecturer, in top universities including Peking University in China. He is the advisory committee member for graduate students, a core member for establishing a post-doc program for Merck AP Research Center in China and the major advisor for a post-doc in the Peking University – Merck joint program.


Dr. Zhang is the single author of a book "Optimal High-Throughput Screening" published by Cambridge University Press in 2011 and has another book “Statistical Omics” as the first editor under contract in Chapman Hall/CRC. He has published numerous first-authored, single-authored or co-authored articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. The novel methods developed by Dr. Zhang and his colleagues along with their applications have a profound impact on the HTS research field, especially in RNAi HTS research. Four of his articles (2 single authored, 1 first-authored and 1 second-authored) have been listed among the top 50 most-cited articles in Journal of Biomolecular Screening since 2008. One of his co-authored articles had been highlighted in Nature Medicine’s year-end review on Notable Advances in 2008.

 

Dr. Zhang has been invited to serve as a critical reviewer for papers submitted to Nature, Nature Methods and so on, as an Expert Evaluator for grant proposals for multiple panels in the European Union (EU) 2020 Horizon Program, the EU 7th Framework Programme Health Theme, and as a reviewer for the NIH Study Section. He has reviewed (as a referee) many manuscripts submitted to prestigious journals. As a result of my training and experiences, I have chosen asthma as the model complex trait for my work. To support this global perspective, my research at the Channing Laboratory has focused on epidemiologic studies to evaluate environmental determinants of asthma as well as specific studies of asthma genetics. I have active research interests in several areas, including factors influencing the natural history of asthma, early life determinants of asthma susceptibility, the obesity/asthma relationship, and effects of volcanic smog on respiratory health. Careful elucidation of risk factors resulting from these epidemiologic studies can provide an impetus for continued work involving the genetic contribution to asthma, given a specific environmental risk factor, or vice versa.

Reversal of these changes is associated with tumor arrest and constitutes the basis of epigenetic therapy.  DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors and histone deacteylase (HDAC) inhibitors are considered the backbone of epigenetic therapy in cancer and are currently FDA approved for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, respectively. My laboratory focuses on understanding the global epigenetic changes associated with DNMT and HDAC inhibitors and the mechanisms of resistance development against these agents.

The research interests have focused on the mechanisms controlling myogenic cell differentiation and their alterations in dystrophic, transformed and aged muscle. Most relevant results indicate that factors such as vasopressin, IGF1, TNF, through their respective signaling pathways, play a role on the transcriptional control of MRF(MyoD, myogenin, MEF2) in normal and diseased muscle. We have shown that vasopressin, through the activation of the calcineurin- and the CaMK- dependent pathways, induces the formation of multiple transcription factor complexes. We are currently investigating the mechanisms controlling muscle homeostasis and their modifications by agents inducing hypertrophy (AVP), as well as senile or disuse atrophy and cachexia (TNF), and the role of intra- and extra-muscular myogenic precursors in such processes.

Main research interests during the last years were focused on the study of Egr-1 protein and its role in the control of cell apoptosis and proliferation .These studies applied to either human lymphocytes or CNS cells showing  the role for Egr-1 as gene able to regulate cell proliferation and apoptosis  in the EBV-positive lymphomas and, more recently, the glial tumors. The role for Egr-1 as apoptotic co-regulator in cerebellar granular cells was also demonstrated.Recently we have demonstrate a correlation between EGR1 expression and response to cisplatin in glioma primary cells.We have also demonstrated in collaboration with Prof A Tata and Prof F. Franciolini (University of Perugia)  the role of  M2 receptors in  gliomas and the involvement  of ion channel KCNN4 in the  glioma cell motility.

Lise Aagaard is professor in clinical pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark. She has been working with different aspects of medicines safety, medicine use, health policy and regulatory affairs. Professor Aagaard is editor in chief of the journal Orphan drugs- research and reviews. She has conducted several studies on medicine use in children and adolescents. She graduated as a pharmacist (MSc pharm) in 2001, and in 2005 she received her Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with specialization in Organization and Management. In 2008 she earned her PhD degree for analyses of how knowledge about adverse drug reactions can be improved.
From 2001 to 2003 she was involved with construction and development of a national evidence based drug-drug interactions database, and from 2004 to 2008 she was employed as a pharmacovigilance officer at the Danish Medicines Agency. During the period in the Danish Medicines she also attended monthly meetings in the European Medicines Agency representing Denmark in the Pharmacovigilance Working Party. Besides her scientific research she also teaches and supervises PhD, masters and bachelor students.
Lise Aagaard has served as a member of advisory boards for several journals as well as in national and international evaluation committees. She has been chairman of the board of the Danish Pharmaceutical Society.

Dr Vangelis Manolopoulos is a full professor at the department of Pharmacology of Democritus University of Thrace Medical School in Alexandroupolis, Greece and at the Clinical Pharmacology Unit of the Academic General Hospital of Alexandroupolis. Ηe obtained a PhD from the Medical School of Patras University in 1991. Between 1992 and 1995 he did postdoctoral research at the Milwaukee Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin. Then he moved on to the department of Physiology of the Medical School of the Katholic University in Leuven, Belgium, where he was a research scientist between 1995 and 1998. Since 1998 Dr Manolopoulos has been teaching basic and clinical pharmacology to medical students at his university and since 2001 he has developed and teaches a course in Pharmacogenetics, one of the first to be introduced to the Medical School undergraduate curriculum worldwide. He has authored more than 80 indexed publications that have received more than 1500 citations, including a recent a recent publication in New England Journal of Medicine where he was the senior corresponding author (NEJM 369:2304, 2013). His current research interests include clinical applications of pharmacogenomics in drugs used for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, anticoagulant therapy, asthma, and psychiatric diseases. In addition he has a long-standing interest in endothelial cell physiology and atherosclerosis. He was the Principal Investigator for Greece of the European Consortium for the pharmacogenetics of anticoagulation (EU-PACT). He has served for more than 10 years continuously at the Board of the Greek Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology and is currently its General Secretary. Between 2005-2011 he was the representative of Greece at the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology (EACPT). In Sept 2009 he organized the 8th Summer School of EACPT in Alexandroupolis. He is Vice President and member of the Board of the European Society for Pharmacogenomics and Theranostics (ESPT) and also chairs its Education and Courses Committee. In August 2012 he organized ESPT’s first Summer School in Ljubliana, Slovenia and in June 2014 he organizes a 2nd one in Rome.

Dr. Quan Dong Nguyen currently holds the McGaw Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Inaugural Director of the Stanley M. Ariel Fernandez is a Senior Investigator of Argentine National Research Council. Ariel Fernández introduced what appears to be the correct formulation for self-organization in nonequilibrium thermodynamics by realizing that the thermodynamically relevant degrees of freedom must belong to a center manifold, an algebraically closed entity, and not to an attractor, as Ilya Prigogine previously assumed. He has provided a semiempirical solution to the protein folding problem by introducing the episteric tension, a measure of the distortion of the water structural matrix that requires a multi-scale theory of dielectrics. He rationally discovered a ligand that would competitively disrupt a protein-protein interface for therapeutic purposes.

He also managed to predict and control induced folding in drug-target associations. He introduced the dehydron, a structural defect in proteins that promotes its own dehydration. A dehydron is a meta-structural feature of relevance in drug design, enzyme catalysis and protein folding. Ariel Fernández determined and measured the dehydronic field, the mechanical equivalent of the dehydration propensity of a dehydron exerted on a test nonpolar molecule and orthogonal to the Coulombic field. His current efforts are devoted to show that dehydrons are enablers and stimulators of enzyme catalysis.

In the clinical genetics laboratories Dr. Scott is involved in high-complexity molecular testing, including array-based comparative genomic hybridization and exome sequencing. He has co-authored Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) practice guidelines for pharmacogenetic-guided patient management with warfarin and clopidogrel and is a member of several international pharmacogenomic research consortia, as well as a co-investigator of the eMERGE consortium through Mount Sinai’s Institute for Personalized Medicine (IPM) working on the clinical implementation of pharmacogenomics. Dr. Scott previously was a KL2 Faculty Scholar at Mount Sinai and is now supported by a K23 Translational Scholar Career Award in Phamacogenomics and Personalized Medicine. Other honors include the 2011 William Bowes Jr. Award in Medical Genetics, sponsored by the Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the 2012 Dr. Harold and Golden Lamport Research Award, sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

Indira Padmalayam, Ph.D. heads the Lead Generation Biology Laboratory which is focused on providing biological assay support for medicinal chemistry SAR/hit-to-lead efforts for drug discovery programs at Southern Research which span a broad range of therapeutic areas such as oncology, infectious, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. She joined Southern Research in August 2010 as a Program Manager of the Strategic Initiatives Plan (SIP), an internal research funding program, and Head of the Assay Development laboratory. Dr. Padmalayam received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Georgia State University (GSU) in Atlanta in 1996, after which she completed a three-year postdoctoral study at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, investigating pathogenic mechanisms of the Bartonellae species. She then moved to Reddy US Therapeutics (RUS), a subsidiary of Dr. Reddy’s Pharmaceuticals, based in Atlanta, GA. At RUS, she served as Associate Director and a Project Leader in their Drug Discovery program, and played a key role in early drug discovery and hit-to-lead efforts. Dr. Padmalayam is also a member of the Center for Neuromolecular Research at Southern Research.

Professor Ru-Band Lu graduated from National Defense Medical center, Taiwan in 1972. He became clinical fellowship of psyphamachology in Baylor Medical College, Huston, Texas, USA between 1981 and 1982 and he got clinical psyphamachologist in US. He became a professor of Psychiatry at National Defense Medical Center in 1989. Since 1992 to 1993, he was a visiting research scientist in Human Genetics at Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA. From 2003 to 2009, he was the director of the Institute of Behavioral Medicine and the chair man of the Department of Psychiatry, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan as well as a distinguished professor from 2005 to now. Dr. Lu was elected to the presidency of the Taiwanese Psychiatry Association from 2003 to 2005. He also got a reward as an outstanding researcher in basic medicine of National Cheng Kung University, College of Medicine in 2006 and outstanding award of the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry in 2007. He finds several new treatments and has got the patent of off-label drugs new mechanism to build up the new model to treat several major mental disorders and he has published more than three hundred and thirty research articles in the past years.
