Xiangyang Shi, a research associate at Department of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology at Cornell University. He had received a PhD in Plant Pathology from University of California-Riverside, 2006. He received The Chancellor’s Fellowship Awards of University of California-Riverside, U.S.A., 2001-2002; The National Spark Plant Scientific and Technological Award, China, 1997; National Scientific and Technological Advancement Award, China, 1995; Henan Province Science and Technology Progress Prize, China, 1996. He was an Editor at China Forestry Publishing House and edited books on plant diseases and agricultural development. He had 13 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and is author of four books on plant disease and controlling strategy. He is a member of The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the America Phytopathological Society (APS), and America Society for Microbiology (ASM).

Despite a known role for inappropriate gene silencing  in cancer, DNA methylation reversal pathways are not understood. Dr. Chioma Okeoma is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She is the 2008 recipient of the Andy Kaplan Prize by the Cold Spring Retrovirus Meeting. Chioma had her postdoctoral training at the Laboratory of Dr. Susan Ross of the University of Pennsylvania. From a humble beginning in Nigeria, Chioma obtained a B.Agric.Tech degree from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and a Master of Science degree from the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, both in Nigeria. Chioma became a scholar of the New Zealand Overseas Development Assistance (NZODA). She received her PhD in Animal Science from Massey University, New Zealand. Research interests are in the epidemiology and management of rice diseases. Research activities center on sheath blight, bacterial panicle blight, narrow brown leaf spot, blast, the seedling disease complex and other diseases important in Texas and other southern states. Studies are conducted to better understand disease incidence and severity in response to changes in population genetics of pathogens, rice varieties, environmental conditions, cultural practices, and fungicide use. Current research projects include evaluating and identifying disease resistance, exploiting beneficial microorganisms and cover crops for biocontrol of diseases, and evaluating the impacts of fungicides on disease epidemics and grain yield and quality for main and ratoon (second) crops. The ultimate goal of my basic and applied research program is to develop effective disease management tools and to provide economically and environmentally sound disease management recommendations for rice production.

He was previously a Research Scientist, Michigan Biotechnology Institute. Dr. Saha did post-doctoral research at the University of Maryland, College Park after earning M.S. His current research interest is plant proteomic and physiological responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought, heat, salinity, and ultraviolet-B radiation stresses. Dr. Xu found two isoforms of fructose-biphosphate aldolase were highly phosphorylated in roots under heat stress and this phosphorylation might involve in root thermotolerance. Also, he revealed that under solar ultraviolet-B radiation proteins related to the photosynthetic photosystems increased in abundance while enzymes involved in carbon fixation decreased, which may lead to the formation of active oxygen species. Dr. Xu has published more than 20 articles in many international peer-reviewed journals.

Biography :

Dr. Jian Zhang is a Research Scientist of ADA Technologies, Inc., a Colorado High-Tech industrial for developing medical devices for diagnostic of cancer and infectious diseases. Dr. Zhang has received a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Shanghai, China in 2004 and held a postdoctoral position at Colorado State University from 2005 to 2009 for development of Tuberculosis diagnostic and drug discovery. He is serving as a principal investigator for several grants on diagnostic of infectious disease and cancers funded by NIH and DoD. Dr. Zhang is a routine reviewer of 5 journals and holds 15 publications on reputed journals.

Dr. Maher Al Rwahnih After receiving his PhD in Plant Virology in 2004 from the University of Bari, Italy, Maher Al Rwahnih joined the Foundation Plant Services division of the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of California, Davis, where he is currently an Assistant Project Scientist working on the development of diagnostic tools for the detection and analysis of plant viruses. He has a Masters Degree in Integrated Pest Management of Mediterranean Fruit Tree Crops from the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, Bari, Italy in 2000 specializing in Plant Virology, and a B.A in Plant Protection in 1998 from the University of Jordan, Amman. Dr Al Rwahnih is an expert in the diagnosis and control of infectious diseases of fruit and nut trees, and in grapevine both in Europe and in the U.S. He is a pioneer in the use high throughput genomic sequencing for the detection of vineyard and orchard disease agents.

Dr. Shujian Zhang is currently working as a Research Associate at Department of Plant Pathology, University of Florida. He received a PhD in Plant Pathology from Nanjing Agricultural University of China in 2007. In the same year he was appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Plant Pathology at Nanjing Agricultural University. He has published over 10 peer-reviewed papers and 10 abstracts or full papers in conference proceedings. Dr. Zhang’s work on citrus greening (huanglongbing) has been published in Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, and has been selected as “Editor’s Pick” by the editor-in-chief as reported on the websites of the International Society of Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions and The American Phytopathological Society. He is also serving as a reviewer for 6 international journals, such as Phytopathology, Plant Disease, Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology and Journal of Plant Pathology. We have recently discovered a novel resistance to potyviruses in Solanum phureja germplasm and studies are ongoing to map and characterise this gene. Studies on localisation and function of PMTV TGB movement proteins have revealed that PMTV infection includes a nuclear/nucleolar phase important for long distance movement in the vascular system. Systems are being established to investigate the molecular mechanism of vector transmission of PMTV.
