Biography :

Franco Maria Venanzi, PhD, is a research professor of Physiology at the University of Camerino (UNICAM) Italy, where is Head of the Laboratory of Translational Biology Laboratory. His research is in the area of cancer vaccines and cancer immunotherapy. Since the mid-90s his research is aimed at developing DNA-based vaccines to treat cancer (e.g. breast cancer and melanoma). He pioneered the development of DNA vaccines against the oncogene HER-2/neu, and his preclinical studies contributed to the progression of the vaccine to the clinical setting. Since the work began he has sought to develop new approaches to further increase the potency of DNA vaccines using immune-stimulatory gene adjuvants. Recently, Prof. Venanzi scientific interest extended to the search of predictive biological markers to enable the selection of cancer patients who are most likely to benefit from dendritic cells-based immunotherapy. Prof. Venanzi serves as reviewer for various journal of oncology and immunology and as scientific consultant for small biotech companies.

 Biography
Research Interest :

The major focus of my laboratory is on vaccine development for tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death due to infections in the world today and we are working on newer strategies to develop vaccines. We developed a novel gene knockout vaccine from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) that protects mice better than BCG (Infection& Immunity, 2000, 2004). We propose to develop this ultimately into a candidate vaccine for humans. Although BCG is used a vaccine against tuberculosis in man, it does not offer long term protection. Parameters for long term immunity are uncertain. However, a key defect in development of better vaccine effect is that both BCG and wild type Mtb inhibit phagosome maturation, lysosomal degradation and processing of antigens through MHC pathway so that effective T cell responses are probably not induced. We have therefore developed novel hypotheses and mechanisms to address this issue.

Alwyn Rapose

Alwyn Rapose
Department of Medicine
University of Massachusetts
USA

Biography :

Dr. Alwyn Rapose now enjoys practicing medicine in Massachusetts. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester and liked the experience so much that he stayed on board for another year as Chief Resident. He then completed his Infectious Disease fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Rapose felt that Fallon Clinic was a good fit and a great place to start his career as an Infectious Disease specialist. “I had worked with Fallon Clinic physicians when I was a resident. That is the reason I came back to this area – I knew I would be working with people that I really respect and could learn from,” he explains.
Dr. Rapose originally studied engineering in college, but began to feel strongly that becoming a doctor is what he was destined for. “God wanted me to become a doctor. I think He put that desire in my heart, and then helped me to make that choice. It’s been a great experience.”
Infectious Disease is a specialty that Dr. Rapose is familiar with, it’s the closest field to what he had been trained for in India. “Infectious Disease is a subspecialty of medicine, but you feel like an internist at the same time. In this field you have to think like a specialist and an internist. You have to be a good, allaround physician. That’s why I enjoy it so much.”
Dr. Rapose tries to reassure his patients and give them faith that they will recover. He believes that it’s important to treat not only peoples’ illnesses, but their mental and spiritual health as well. “I am willing to share my Raposeal experiences if it helps people achieve a positive attitude. When they are suffering, I think a positive attitude helps them recover faster.”
One of the biggest challenges that Infectious Disease physicians face today are the “superbacteria” that are highly resistant to many of the medications available. “Fortunately, we are developing new antibiotics and new ways of treating these patients. These organisms are difficult to treat, but we are taking up the challenge and beating them.”
In his spare time, Dr. Rapose loves to get out and meet people and spend time with family and friends. He also plays the guitar and is part of his church’s music choir. Dr. Rapose enjoys traveling and has visited many places during his time in the United States, including Puerto Rico, Texas and California.

Biography :

Adult hematopoietic stem/bone marrow transplantation (HSCT) involves the transfer of donor cells to patients/recipients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma or other blood/bone marrow cancers. Dr. Sarantopoulos primary laboratory interest is study of the significant immune pathology that develops in patients who have undergone HSCT. While HSCT offers the possibility of cure for many patients with hematologic diseases, the full potential of HSCT has not been realized because of transplant-related complications. Chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) has become the most significant post-HSCT cause of morbidity and mortality. Chronic GVHD has an adverse impact on survival that has not improved significantly over the last 30 years. The only standard therapy for chronic GVHD is high-dose steroids. Targeted therapy for chronic GVHD has been difficult to develop due to limited understanding of immunopathologic mechanisms in human cGVHD. Responses to rituximab suggest that B cells play a role in cGVHD, but the mechanisms that promote and sustain B cell involvement have not been elucidated. If we can better understand the pathophysiology of chronic GVHD we can develop targeted therapeutic agents specific for BAFF pathways and activated B cells that may lead to decreased morbidity and mortality in our patients.

I then worked at CVM, MSU during 20032007 within the project Risk Factor Analysis of Salmonella and Campylobacter status of Broiler Flocks funded by USA National Research Initiative Epidemiological Approaches to Food Safety, CSREES , USDA. While in CVM, MSU, I participated in Mississippi Poultry Health Roundtable, academiaindustry interface veterinary extension programme, and assisted in teaching veterinary epidemiology and preventive veterinary medicine to veterinary professionals and graduate students. At the same time I carried out my PhD research on risk factor analysis of preharvest Salmonella status of broiler flocks in southern United States. I was elected to membership in The Society of Phi Zeta, the USA honour society of veterinary medicine, and was a student member of CRAWD and AAVLD. I am a charter member of EvidenceBased Veterinary Medicine Association .
