Amy K Sater
Associate Professor
Department of Biology and Biochemistry
University of Houston
USA
Tel. 713-743-2688

 Biography :

Dr. Amy K Sater is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston. She has received her PhD. at the University of Texas at Austin and carried out postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She has authored 33 research articles and 3 book chapters, and she co-edited Analysis of Growth Factor Signaling in Embryos (CRC Press). She has served on the Xenopus Genome Steering Committee since 2005, and she co-organizes the “Cell and Developmental Biology of Xenopus” course at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (2011-2013). She is a member of the Society for Developmental Biology.

Biography
 Research Interest :

My chief research interests lie in the mechanisms that govern early vertebrate development. Much of our work examines aspects of signaling, and we have ongoing interests in transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulation. We are currently investigating the roles of microRNA-dependent regulation during the establishment of embryonic cell fate. These studies are conducted using the amphibian Xenopus; Xenopus embryos offer a unique opportunity to integrate analyses of gene function during vertebrate development with studies of biochemical and molecular mechanisms. A second major interest is genomics and the establishment of genomics resources for Xenopus.

He is co-editor and editorial board member of 13 scientific journals and scientific advisory board member of several institutions.

Biography
 Research Interest :

The focus of Dr Efferths research is on tumor pharmacology and the development of novel options for treatment and diagnosis of cancer. A major topic is research on natural products derived from medicinal plants. Two fields are in the center of his interest
1. Molecular pharmacology and toxicology of natural products. Drug resistance and severe side effects represent major obstacles of current chemotherapy. This necessitates the identification of novel compounds from plants with anticancer activity. The aims are a. the identification of novel drugs with improved tumor specificity and efficacy against drug-resistant tumors as well as less adverse side effects and b.  the analysis of underlying molecular modes of action in tumor cells and normal tissues. A current research project focuses on chemically pure compounds derived from medicinal plants and their analysis by systems biology

2. Genome-wide expression profiling and genomic aberrations in tumors. Drug resistance of tumor cells reduces the probability for patients to be cured and reduce survival. The knowledge of determinants which affect drug responsiveness of tumors and prognosis of patients would allow the design tailor-made treatment protocols for each individual patient. The aim is to develop techniques for the predictive determination for individualized therapy options and the implementation of natural products for treatment. The overall aim is the integration of active principles of traditional Chinese medicine into western medicine.

Biography
 Research Interest :

The aim of Aurel Popa Wagner group is to unravel cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying aging progression and its significance for brain diseases. The group has a long-standing interest in molecular mechanisms of brain remodelling in the aged rat brain. His group has studied the plasticity of the aging brain in response to stimuli for more than 15 years and to stroke injury in aged animals for the last 10 years. Overall our results suggest that: (1) although older animals retain the potential for brain plasticity-related cytogenetic events after injury, the expression of key brain plasticity-associated genes and proteins is often attenuated and temporally altered; (2) an important cellular event associated with restricted axonal growth after stroke in aged animals is the early formation of a scar in the infarcted region; (3) Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor lowers mortality and enhances neurogenesis in the brains of post-stroke aged animals; (4) vascular wall reactivity is exacerbated in the post-stroke aged animals. Expertise: aged animals models of cerebral ischemia; behavioral analysis; recording of EEG and various physiological parameters by telemetric measurements; MRI for small animals; immunohistochemical procedures, proteomics, genomics.

Edward N Harris

University of Nebraska
USA
Tel. 402-472-7468

 Biography :

I started my career at Louisiana State University as a graduate student studying Rab GTPases in Dictyostelium under the direction of Dr. James Cardelli.  My thesis was specifically on RabD, a Rab14 mammalian homolog, but expanded into several of the participating Rabs and some of the lysosomal trafficking regulators such as Lvs. In 2002, I started a post-doc fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Paul H. Weigel dissecting the biochemical relationship of the HARE/Stabilin-2 receptor with the binding and endocytosis of glycosaminoglycans, primarily hyaluronan and heparin. These studies resulted in 8 papers in which I and my colleagues examined how these ligands bind, how they are competed by each other, signaling mechanisms propagated by the receptor, and so forth. I spent 8 years in Oklahoma City; 4 years as a post-doctoral fellow and 4 years as a research assistant professor.  During this time I also taught nutritional biochemistry to the Food and Nutrition undergraduate and graduate students. In 2010, I started up my own lab at the University of Nebraska.

Biography
 Research Interest :

My primary research interest is in the continual study of the Stabilin receptors and how they bind different heparinoid polymers. This ranges from basic biochemical assays for binding/competition to using animal models to examine the physiological aspects of heparin, HA, chondroitin sulfate scavenging in the liver.  The body turns over approximately 1/3 of the total hyaluronan content daily.  Heparin, which is used in all surgical procedures and in the treatment of thrombosis and dialysis, is a very diverse molecule with little understanding of how it is catabolized from the blood stream. My lab seeks to understand how the liver scavenges heparinoid molecules and what other molecules may inhibit or enhance the initial steps in this catabolic pathway. Other interests include the host liver cell of the stabilin receptors which is the sinusoidal endothelial cell (SEC) and how it behaves under metabolic stresses such as dyslipidemia and fluxes of heparin and HA. There are also interesting cross-talk pathways between SECs and hepatocytes since SEC are the guardians of the liver. They contain fenestration or cytoplasmic holes in which they act as a filter for macromolecular complexes. SECs are among the most endocytic cells in the body and their ability to internalize and catabolize the myriad amount of material from the blood has not been fully explored.

 Biography :

Dr. Qin received a Masterraquo;s and MD from Xian Medical University with a specialization in dermatology, and his PhD from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences at Peking Union Medical College, with both his Masters and PhD in microbial infections, inflammation and hostpathogen interactions. He was a postdoctoral fellow for one year at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, and a second 3year postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University Cardiology Division. He worked with Drs. Tohru Fukai and David Harrison to study the role of reactive oxygen species in cardiovascular disease. Before joining to UTHSCSA Division of Vascular Surgery as an Assistant Professor and a director of the Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory, Dr. Qin also worked at the University of Cincinnati Division of Cardiovascular Disease for four years as a Research Instructor.

Biography
 Research Interest :

The driving force of Dr. Qin»s project is due to advances in techniques and science, it is time to revisit the vascular function of copper, an essential nutrient in human. First, the sensitivity and application of metallomic techniques have greatly improved. Dr. Qin is utilizing a highly novel approach that combines cutting-edge X-ray fluorescence spectrometric (XRF) imaging with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect copper concentrations and localization in the blood vessel wall. Application of XRF imaging to biological samples in 2004 represented one of most exciting advances in metallomics. Dr. Barry Lai at the Argonne National Laboratory collaborates with Dr. Qin to apply this technique in vascular study. In addition, the emerging flow injection technique along with improved sample extraction methodology has produced a more powerful ICP-MS. The technique has been optimized and applied in Dr. Qin project in vascular tissues and cells via a close collaboration with Dr. Joseph Caruso in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. Moreover, they established a novel concept, vascular metallomics, to bridge the gap between vascular biology and metallomics. Second, copper trafficking theory has been recently established and validated in several laboratories. This theory convincingly defines a group of proteins in the regulation of uptake, distribution, sequestration and export of copper. Among these proteins, ATP7A has attracted significant attention since the identification of its function as a copper egress pump and the discovery of mutations of ATP7A leading to human Menkes disease. Dr. Qin»s approach is to study the physiopathology of the interaction between cardiovascular homeostasis and copper metabolism in vascular biology via dissecting the function of ATP7A.

He then became interested in human embryonic stem cell research in 2000 and developed new research directions focusing on the molecular regulation of pluripotency at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and The Rockefeller University. As an independent researcher at UCR, he continues to study how pluripotency is regulated at the signaling level using human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells as model systems.

Biography
 Research Interest :

We are investigating how the function (self-renewal and pluripotency) and structure (cell architecture and cell-cell interactions) of pluripotent stem cells are mutually integrated to establish their unique molecular identity. We have determined that non-muscle myosin II (NMII) plays an essential role for the regulation of cellular interaction machineries in human and mouse ES cells, and is placed downstream of Rho-Rock signaling (Harb et al. 2008). Recently, we have reported that NMII is a key molecule which regulates cell survival of human pluripotent stem cells (Walker et al. 2010). We are currently focusing on understanding how NMII signaling and self-renewal regulators are interacting each other to determine the unique biological nature of human pluripotent stem cells.

Biography
 Research Interest :

My research is focused on the characterization of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of inositol-containing compounds. Specifically, the work in my laboratory is centered on two metabolites: inositol and mycothiol. Inositol is small (sugar) molecule present in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes that serves as an important signaling molecule, component of cellular membranes and as an important component of other essential small molecules (e.g. mycothiol). Mycothiol is a specialized inositol-containing molecule that is synthesized by mycobacteria and serves essential functions in these organisms by protecting against oxidative damage and detoxifying drugs and other toxins that enter the bacteria. Due to the important functions that these molecules serve, the enzymes that are used to make them are targets for drug development. Consequently, our long-term goal is to use information we gain about the structure and function of the enzymes that make these small molecules to design inhibitors with the potential to serve as therapeutic agents for the treatment of infectious diseases.
