Dr. Comiter received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He stayed in Boston for his residency, serving as resident in general surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and then completed his urology residency at the Harvard Program in Urology. In 1998, Dr. Comiter served as Clinical Instructor and Fellow in Neurourology and Urodynamics at the University of California in Los Angeles.In 1999, Dr. Comiter joined the faculty at the University of Arizona, as Assistant Professor of Urology. In 2003, he was promoted to Associate Professor, and became Chief of the Section of Urology and Residency Program Director. Under his direction, 25% of graduating residents went on to academic fellowship training.Dr. Comiter has been a strong supporter of the SUFU, having presented several abstracts over the past 7 years, and giving several invited lectures during breakout sessions. In addition, he has sponsored several resident presentations at the SUFU and the AUA annual meetings. He was twice the winner of the Joseph F. McCarthy Essay Contest at the Western Section American Urological Association, and has served on the AUA’s Leadership Council, Public Relations Committee, and Young Urologists Committee.Dr. Comiter has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and 25 book chapters, focusing on urinary incontinence, post-prostatectomy incontinence, neuromodulation, and pelvic organ prolapse. He has recently moved to Stanford Medical School, where he is serving as Associate Professor of Urology and Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is Fellowship Director for the AUA/ABOG and SUFU recognized fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.

Using various animal models of bladder outlet obstruction as a representation of human prostatic disease, I am investigating how intervening with pharmacotherapy, neuromodulation, and other novel therapies may help to reverse the adverse changes in the bladder due to the obstruction.

Professor Ronald B Moore, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FACS received his MD from the University of Alberta in 1986. He completed his surgical training in urology and research at the University of Alberta receiving his PhD in experimental surgery and uro-oncology research in 1991. He is an AHFMR Senior Scholar and the inaugural Mr Lube Chair in Uro-Oncology. Dr Moore’s research focuses on novel modalities/therapeutics for treating bladder, kidney and prostate cancer. This research has included laser surgery (including PDT), development of laser and light delivery/detection equipment, drug development, drug testing, drug delivery, biochemical and biological modifiers, molecular markers, predictive assays, gene therapy and development of animal model systems. Dr Moores clinical practice focuses on genitourinary cancers and renal transplantation. He is also involved in clinical trials and clinical outcome studies in these fields. To date he has published more than 200 peer reviewed articles and abstracts.

Larry I. Lipshultz, M.D., is Professor of Urology in the Scott Department of Urology and Chief, Division of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also holds the Lester and Sue Smith Chair in Reproductive Medicine.  After graduating from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, he earned his M.D. degree and completed residency training at the University of Pennsylvania.  He joined the Baylor faculty as a full professor after completing a two-year fellowship in male reproductive medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  A pioneer in urological microsurgery, Dr Lipshultz is an internationally recognized expert in the field of male infertility, erectile dysfunction, and male hormone replacement therapy. As a member of Baylor’s faculty, he is a popular teacher and has trained more than 50 fellows now in practice throughout the U.S. Dr. Lipshultz is a well-known author, editor, and lecturer, and has published more than 200 scientific papers, most of them on the subject of male reproduction.  The authoritative textbook of male reproductive medicine and surgery, Infertility in the Male* is in its 4th edition and Urology and the Primary Care Practitioner** is in its 3rd edition.  Dr. Lipshultz currently serves on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals including the journals Urology and The International Journal of Impotence and Research. Active in numerous scientific organizations, Dr. Lipshultz has served as President of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction and as President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Peter N. Schlegel, M.D., F.A.C.S. is the James J. Colt Professor and Chairman of Urology; Professor of Reproductive Medicine at The Weill Cornell Medical College; as well as the Urologist-in-Chief at The New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell; a Senior Staff Scientist at The Population Council, Center for Biomedical Research; and a Visiting Associate Physician at The Rockefeller University Hospital. Dr. Schlegel is an internationally acclaimed expert in the treatment of male infertility, especially the interface of male factor treatment with assisted reproductive techniques. He was awarded the 1996 Established Clinician Award by The European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology, the source of the most important advance in male infertility treatment in recent years, the technique of intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Dr. Schlegel was awarded a fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992 for collaborative study with urologists in London, which he performed in 1993. In over 220 published or submitted original manuscripts, book chapters and invited articles, Dr. Schlegel has described the characteristics of men who are candidates for sperm retrieval, designed and described novel techniques for sperm retrieval for use with assisted reproduction, and identified the factors that affect the successful achievement of pregnancy after sperm retrieval. More importantly, the team of scientists, reproductive endocrinologists, nurses and technicians that Dr. Schlegel has worked with at Cornell has achieved one of the highest pregnancy rates in the world for treatment of couples using sperm that were retrieved by Dr. Schlegel. Early in his career, Dr. Schlegel worked with pioneers in the field of urology and male reproductive function.  With Dr. Fray Marshall and Dr. Patrick Walsh at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Schlegel worked as a resident in general surgery and urology. During that time, Dr. Schlegel established some of the anatomical basis that was necessary to develop the contemporary procedure of radical prostatectomy that is used to cure localized prostate cancer. Dr. Schlegel is currently or was previously served on editorial board of the medical journals, Journal of Urology, Fertility & Sterility, AUA Update Series, Techniques in Urology, Journal of Andrology, and FertiliText. He was the Edwin A. Beer Program award recipient of The New York Academy of Medicine, 1996-98, and received a New Investigator Award from the American Foundation for Urologic Diseases, 1993-95. Dr. Schlegel is a board-certified urologist, who served on the American Board of Urology Examination Committee, which writes the exam questions that evaluates candidates for urology board certification. He is currently licensed to practice medicine in the state of New York, and graduated near the top of his class from The University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The focus of Dr. Shariats research during the past decade has been the development of molecular biomarkers that help with the early discovery and characterization of the biological and clinical aggressiveness of bladder cancer. He has contributed more than 330 peer-reviewed publications, predominantly in the area of bladder and prostate cancer, to the scientific literature. He holds multiple United States and international patents for molecular biomarkers. Most recently, he has been the principal investigator of several collaborative networks such as the Bladder Cancer Research Consortium, The Bladder Cancer Detection Group, and The Upper Tract Urothelail Carcinoma Collaboration.  His research relies on close collaboration with scientists and physician scientists in urology, medical oncology, and molecular biology. His laboratory has used a variety of techniques including RT-PCR, laser capture microdissection, high density tissue microarrays, SMP arrays, tiling arrays, and cNDA expression arrays in combination with clinical and morphologic parameters to identify significant associations.

Guiting Lin, MD, PhD received his medical degree at the Weifang Medical College in Shandong, China. Lin trained in Surgery at the Harbin Medical University in Harbin China and specialized in Urologic Surgery at Peking University, Chinas premier medical school located in Beijing. In 2001, Lin joined the Department of Urology, University of California, San Francisco, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. He was promoted to Assistant Researcher in 2005, Assistant Professor in 2007, and to Associate Professor in 2011. In China Lin received numerous awards from the Shandong Ministry of Health, and Peking University. His University of California at San Francisco research has also received recognition, including the 2002 Outstanding Young Researcher award given by the International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research. Lin conducts research in the Urology Laboratory and has authored or co-authored over 100 publications. In 2003, Guiting Lin established an in vitro system to evaluate the penile nerve regeneration, and the model has been extensively used in the andrology filed now. In 2008, his team has firstly defined the adipose derived stem cells in tissue and the concept on “vascular stem cells (VSC)”, which has been widely cited and accepted in the world. In 2011, his team firstly localized the STRO-1 positive cells in the bone marrow, and this achievement has been elected as the “Top news” in stem cell research.

Biography:Dr. Hugh Lavery III graduated from the Ohio State University Urology Residency Program On June 30, 2008. He is completing a Robotic Urology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY.

I am a clinical researcher and urologic oncologist with extensive experience in surgical robotics.  I have a specific research focus on prostate cancer, bladder cancer and public policy relating to these diseases.  My interests are improving perioperative staging and surgical techniques for patients with prostate and bladder cancer, as well as comparative effectiveness research for clinically localized prostate cancer.  I have also investigated the feasibility and application of minimally-invasive techniques in the treatment of a variety of urologic diseases.  Through this research, I hope to optimize patient selection for treatment and perioperative outcomes, improving not only cancer-specific survival, but also health-related quality of life.

Dr. Warlick completed his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota in 2001.  He completed residency training in urology at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in 2006.  He served as an Instructor in Urology at Johns Hopkins briefly before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an Assistant Professor in Urology in 2007.  Dr. Warlick’s clinical practice is focused on urologic oncology with an emphasis in prostate cancer.  He has an active research program which focuses on active surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer and the use of MRI in the management of prostate cancer.

Dr.Janice Santos is an Assistant Professor of Urology at Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Puerto Rico and received her Medical Degree from the same institution. Dr. Santos completed her urology residency training at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, NY. She subsequently pursued a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. After completing her first fellowship, Dr. Santos moved back to New York, where she trained in Female Urology, Voiding dysfunction, Urodynamics , Neurourology and Endourology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Having completing fellowships in the above fields within Urology, Dr. Santoss clinical interests include the medical and surgical treatment of the various urologic cancers that affect both men and women. Her clinical and research interests are in male and female incontinence, vaginal prolapse, voiding dysfunction, urodynamics and surgical outcomes. Additionally, she has a special interest in managing patients with neurogenic voiding dysfunction.

I am a cancer biologist and toxicologist and my principal area of research has been prostate and bladder cancers over the last many years. The research areas include prostate and bladder cancer development, growth and progression, with an emphasis on novel therapeutics and biomarker development for early stage cancer detection. I have published over several full peer reviewed manuscripts and several presentations based on my research on these two urinary cancers.

Rajendra major research interest  includes understanding  mechanisms by which environment factors cause malignant transformation in mammalian cells and examine the patho-physiology of pro-inflamatory mediators in oncogenic transformation and progression.

Dr. Breyer is an Assistant Professor in Residence at the University of California San Francisco in the Department of Urology. His clinical focus includes  men’s health and reconstructive urology.  His research interests include the epidemiology of lower urinary tract symptoms, men’s health and sexual medicine. He  received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana and received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.He completed his general surgery and urology training at the University of California  San Francisco. He also completed a fellowship in male reconstructive urology and trauma. In June of 2011, he will  complete a Masters degree in clinical research from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California San Francisco.
