Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is the most common form of hereditary colorectal cancer. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant syndrome, as a result of defective mismatch repair (MMR) proteins. A single gene, a combination of genes, or a combination of genetic and environmental factors can cause familial colorectal cancer. Typically these families have one or two members with a history of colorectal cancer or precancerous polyps.Inherited colorectal cancers are associated with a genetic mutation in a cancer susceptibility gene. Everyone inherits one susceptibility gene from each of their parents, making a total of two working copies of each gene. If a mutation in one copy of a cancer susceptibility gene is passed from the parent to their child, the child is predisposed (or has the potential) to develop cancer. Review articles are the summary of current state of understanding on a particular research topic. They analyze or discuss research previously published by scientist and academicians rather than reporting novel research results. Review article comes in the form of systematic reviews and literature reviews and are a form of secondary literature. Systematic reviews determine an objective list of criteria, and find all previously published original research papers that meet the criteria. They then compare the results presented in these papers. Literature reviews, by contrast, provide a summary of what the authors believe are the best and most relevant prior publications. The concept of "review article" is separate from the concept of peer-reviewed literature. It is possible for a review to be peer-reviewed, and it is possible for a review to be non-peer-reviewed.
