Forensic Mental Health Nursing

It is a sub-speciality of psychiatry and is related to criminology. It encompasses the interface between law and psychiatry. A forensic psychiatrist provides services such as determination of competency to stand trial, to a court of law to facilitate the adjudicative process.

Psychiatric nursing or mental health nursing is the specialty of nursing that cares for people of all ages with mental illness or mental distress, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression or dementia.

Forensic Nursing Care

The nursing speciality of forensic nursing involves caring for victims and perpetrators of crime while attempting to collect forensic evidence on the circumstances surrounding the incident, acting as part of the legal system while nursing.

A nursing care plan outlines the nursing care to be provided to an individual/family/community.

Forensic Mental Illness

Forensic mental health services provide assessment and treatment of people with a mental disorder and a history of criminal offending, or those who are at risk of offending.

Forensic mental health defined more broadly is an area of specialisation that, in the criminal sphere, involves the assessment and treatment of those who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led, or could lead, to offending. In the civil sphere forensic mental health has a more complex remit, not only being involved in the assessment and treatment of those who have potentially compensatable injuries but also providing advice to courts and tribunals on competency and capacity

Forensic Nursing Science

The science of forensic nursing represents an emerging world view in the future of the forensic sciences as crime and violence bring together the two most powerful systems affecting the lives of people throughout the world – health and justice.

The enigma of defining nursing science is preceded by defining nursing, science, research, and nursing theory-guided practice. The context for exploring the meaning of nursing science is provided through examination of the totality and simultaneity paradigms. Differing views of nursing as a discipline are discussed.

Forensic Mental disorder

Mental disorders includes: Organic brain disorders – damage to brain tissue caused by diseases such as alcoholism or dementia Personality disorders – enduring disturbances in the way in which a person interacts with others Intellectual disability – caused by problems with brain development.

Mental health problems can cover a broad range of disorders, but the common characteristic is that they all affect the affected person’s personality, thought processes or social interactions. They can be difficult to clearly diagnose, unlike physical illnesses.

Forensic Nursing Clinical Practice

Forensic nursing, as a professional discipline, originally defined its role as a medical examiner's investigator in the field of death investigation. However, with the evolution of a new area of clinical practice, the application of forensic science to nursing reveals a wider role in the investigation of crime and in the legal process

Forensic Nursing is the clinical practice of the biopsychosocial aspects of healthcare as it is applied to the Law. The Forensic Nurse deals with the investigation and treatment of trauma, death, and violent or criminal activity within the community

Emergency and Acute Care Setting

Acute care is a branch of secondary health care where a patient receives active but short-term treatment for a severe injury or episode of illness, an urgent medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. In medical terms, care for acute health conditions is the opposite from chronic care, or longer term care.

Forensic and Victimology

It has largely been overlooked as an important component of criminal investigation. It is the objective examination of victim information for purposes of addressing investigative and legal issues.it is an essential process in crime scene investigation.

Victimology is the study of victimization, including the relationships between victims and offenders, the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system — that is, the police and courts, and corrections officials — and the connections between victims and other social groups and institutions

Trauma Nursing

Trauma Nurses treat patients in a state of emergency, and handle urgent situations where the cause of injury or disease isn't yet known. They can work in hospital emergency rooms and other chaotic environments, and often need to coordinate with doctors, family members and other nurses.

Emergency nurses are known by many names, including trauma nurses and critical care nurses. Regardless of their titles, these nursing professionals provide a very important medical service. Along with other emergency medical professionals, like paramedics and physicians, these nurses provide treatment for patients in emergency medical situations.

Correctional Nursing

Correctional nursing is not an easy task.Correctional nurses are one part security; one part ER nurse; one part primary carenurse; and, if working in an infirmary, one part critical care nurse. Their patients are notdefined by one disease process.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis

Post-exposure prophylaxis or Post-exposure prevention (PEP) is any preventive medical treatment started immediately after exposure to a pathogen (such as a disease-causing virus), in order to prevent infection by the pathogen and the development of disease.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) guidelines lack a substantive evidence base to guide advice. It is extremely unlikely that this will change, as randomised studies of different drug regimens for PEP are not feasible owing to the complexity of exposure, low event rate, and inability to ethically have a placebo group. Evolving basic science understanding, along with further studies on animals and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) findings, will continue to guide policy makers.
