Antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV into a chronic condition for those with access to treatment. Despite this clinical success, coping with the diagnosis and progression of the virus poses enormous psychiatric challenges that can exacerbate or lead to mental depression. Studies show that people living with HIV experience depression at rates twice or more than that of uninfected individuals. Physical, psychological and social dysfunctions resulting from drug addiction can add to the stress of living with HIV, accelerating the deterioration of mental healt. Depression, in turn, is associated with poorer biological responses, faster clinical progression and higher mortality among people living with the virus.
