Hepatology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study as well as management of disorders of liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Although traditionally it was considered a sub-specialty of gastroenterology, rapid expansion has been seen in some countries. Doctors specializing solely on this area are called hepatologists. The main reason for seeking specialist advice is diseases and complications related to viral hepatitis and alcohol. Over 2 billion people have been infected with Hepatitis B virus at some or the other point in their life, and persistent carriers are approximately 350 million. Either hepatitis B or Hepatitis C virus can be attributed by 80% of liver cancers. In terms of mortality rate, the former is second only to smoking among known agents causing cancer.
