Abstract :

The exponential growth of genomic concepts is paralleled by expanding list of basic genetic and functional terminology. Genetics has undoubtedly become an integral part of biomedical science and clinical practice, with important implications in deciphering disease pathogenesis and progression, identifying diagnostic and prognostic markers, as well as designing better targeted treatments. This is surely anticipated to intimidate health care professionals to enhance their knowledge and practice of genomic medicine and its utilization in patient management and modern preventive medicine for the ultimate goal of improving quality of individual?s life. It is indeed a big challenge for biologists and geneticist to interpret results of individual gene and whole genome analysis and produce meaningful results that can be understandable to clinicians and hence paving exploitation of such knowledge in clinical practice for patient and their families? benefit. Here, we shall discuss and exemplify the integration of genetic/genomic analysis and bioinformatics tools to produce palatable, easily digestible knowledge allowing its application in health care practice considering inherited cardiovascular diseases as a paradigm.

Biography :

Heba Sh Kassem is an Associate Professor of Medical Genetics and Director of Clinical Genomics Center at Alexandria Faculty of Medicine. She has obtained her PhD in Molecular Oncology in Manchester University in 2002. She is a certified trainer in Research Ethics following a 2 months fellowship at University of Maryland in 2005, Baltimore, MA, USA. She has published over 25 peer reviewed papers and actively participated in over 50 international conferences. She has obtained several national and international awards. Her research interest always centred around the exploitation and implementation of different molecular approaches to provide evidence based implementation in her clinical practice and mentoring roles. h
