Abstract:

A field study was carried out for several years at the Experimental Research Farm of Aligarh Muslim University to assess the nutritional effect of organic matters such as neem, castor, linseed, soybean and groundnut oil-seed cakes on the growth, yield and productivity parameters of okra, chilli, tomato and eggplants. Significant improvement was observed in growth as well as yield parameters like plant height, fresh biomass, green fruits/plant, ascorbic acid content, chlorophyll content, leaf area index, transpiration and net assimilation rates in all the treatments of test crops as compared to untreated control. Soil amendment with these organic matters improved significantly plant nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and residual available soil nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, thus increased the soil fertility. Microbial population of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes greatly enhanced in the treated soils as compared to untreated one, seems to be due to nutritional potential of these oilseed cakes. Neem cake was found more effective for improvement in growth, yield and fertility of all the test vegetables but more prominent in tomato followed by chilli, okra and eggplants. Although other organics were also found to be improved the growth and productivity parameters of these vegetables. The population of commonly occurring phytonematodes greatly influenced due to the nematicidal compounds released on decomposition of these organic matters as well as interaction with rhizospheric microbial population.
