Factors affecting choice of military medical faculty between the first graders and newly graduated physician

Abstract :

Background: The aim of the study is to find the factors that make the students of first graders in 2012-2013 and newly graduates who are on probation choose medical science as an occupation especially military medical faculty and determine the precedence that they take into account in choosing a profession. Methods: After necessary authorizations, this cross-sectional study was conducted in Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Turkey between March 2013 and April 2013. 95 students from first year graduate and 58 newly graduated doctors joined the study. The form of survey has two parts. The first part deals with the socio-demographic features of participants and second part has questions that try to find the reasons of their preferences of medical science and military medical faculty and the reasons of not being chosen of military medical faculty and the questions related with their professional career. Results: When the factors that affects participants working life is examined, the rate of people who wants to work continuously in primary care centers is 9.2% (n=14). When first graders and new graduates are examined whether they want to work in other institutions except Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), a significant difference is observed (p<0.001). When the reasons of choosing medical faculty such as the dignity of profession of a doctor and high income are compared between the first graders and new graduates, a significant difference is observed (p=0.031 and p<0.001). Conclusion:The reason for the high rate of new graduates who want to work in other institutions is estimated as the opportunity of comparing civil and military health care system throughout of their education life and accordingly civilian physician is more attractive than military physicians to them. Military primary care centers have hard working conditions than non-military primary care centers.

Unal Demirtas has completed his MD at the age of 25 years from Erciyes University. He has joined Turkish Air Force and he participated the Flight Surgeon and Physiological Training.
