Abstract :

An infl uenza pandemic is a threat to mankind due to high morbidity and mortality. Here we discuss infl uenza pandemics in history and their inevitability in two main respects: the viral factors-- evolutive complexity of the infl uenza virus ecosystem and the human factors-- limitation of prevention and control. Th e high rates of mutation, recombination and reassortment, mountainous hosts and broad distribution make the virus diffi cult to be eradicated and provide the possibility of pandemic with potential strains. Th e limitation of vaccine, medicine and methods of synthesized viral control and prevention provides room for the survival and development of potential strains. Th erefore, we assert a hypothesis that despite all the measures to prevent a future infl uenza pandemic, it is inevitable.
