Abstract:

The non-availability of cure for HIV infection led many infected patients to seek for herbal therapy. There are many popular herbal remedies for treating people infected with HIV, and in many cases these are taken preferentially in place of orthodox anti-retroviral medicines. Herbal practitioners who use these herbal remedies claim dramatic results when treating patients with HIV infections and even full-blown AIDS, but the evidence to support their claims is anecdotal and patchy. This necessitated a research to assess the acclaimed effectiveness of these herbal remedies in HIV infection treatment. The toxicity (safety) profiles and active constituents of the identified herbal remedies were determined. The HIV patients being treated with safe herbal remedies were monitored at several centres in Nigeria to determine whether there are measurable benefits from these treatments. The investigation revealed that herbal remedies are effective in HIV infection management and sustained sero-reversion was observed in some HIV patients after taking identified herbal concoction for 5 months.
