Abstract :

Standard therapies for cancer treatment viz., surgery, radiation and immunotherapy have proven effective for cancer patients; however, patients with advance-stage disease typically respond poorly and progress rapidly with incurable clinical outcome. New therapies are therefore a critical unmet medical need for such patient population. In recent years, translational and clinical studies utilizing targeted therapies have been facilitated by increased understanding of the anomalous signal transduction pathways regulating growth and survival of cancer cells. Increased understanding of molecular profiles of cancer subtypes has likely improved therapeutic strategies with targeted agents however; this has led to the emergence of treatment-resistant phenotype. Some new emerging therapies such as targeting cancer cell metabolism, stem cell application, combination therapies and use of nanotechnology has been successful in reducing side-effects and shown greater promise in cancer treatment. This symposium will present some of the emerging and latest treatment strategies which are currently under development. These studies might set a new paradigm in cancer treatment and may be developed as future drugs impacting millions of life afflicted with this deadly form of cancer.
