Managing the complications of Parkinson?s disease treatment

Abstract:

Parkinson?s disease is a complex disease process that affects millions of people worldwide. The current treatment of Parkinson?s disease in the United States consists of several classes of medications, each of which have multiple adverse effects. Management of Parkinson?s disease is difficult as these medications may interfere with the other disease process of patients, placing them at a higher risk for adverse events. In addition, the polypharmacy component of these complicated patients increases the risk for drug interactions. This presentation will serve to review the management of Parkinson?s disease, the motor complications associated with the medications that treat Parkinson?s disease and considerations for Parkinson?s disease management in those with complicating disease processes, such as dementia with behaviors.

Biography :

G. Blair Sarbacker completed her Pharm.D. at Wingate University and a post-graduate year-1 residency at Kerr Drug and Wingate University. She is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of pharmacy. She practices at the University of Texas Senior Health Clinic and the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit. Her research focuses on medication-related adverse events and mortality in the geriatric population.
