Abstract:

Diagnosing acute leukemia in the pediatric population can be challenging, as there are several benign entities that may mimic acute leukemia. It is imperative for the practicing pathologist to be familiar with these entities, and understand appropriate laboratory testing to distinguish benign from malignant. This talk will focus on 7 mimics, spanning B-lymphoblastic, T-lymphoblastic, and acute myeloid leukemia, that are commonly encountered in a general pediatric hospital. An emphasis will be placed on morphology and flow cytometric immunophenotyping, with brief discussions of molecular and other laboratory testing as appropriate.
