The incidence and nature of Adverse Drug Reactions in drug related hospital admissions

Abstract:

Over the past few decades advancements in the drug therapy resulted in enhanced patient care. However, at the same time a significant increase in the incidence of drug related problems (DRPs) has occurred. Globally, many studies have been carried out on DRPs, but in India there have been very limited research conducted to exemplify the impact of DRPs on hospital admissions. The current research study focuses to investigate the incidence and the nature of adverse drug events resulting in hospital admissions and to study the treatment pattern for the DRP admissions. This retrospective cross sectional study conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital, included all drug related hospital admissions during Jan 2009 to Dec 2011. The year wise incidence in DRP admissions during 2009 to 2011 were 0.200%, 0.196% and 0.185% respectively. Of these, Adverse Drug Reaction (43.1%) was one of the most common causes followed by poisoning, drug dependence, supratherapeutic dosage and drug misuse. Out of 163 ADR cases, 28.8% of the patients were admitted to emergency ward while 71.1% of the patients were admitted to general ward. The occurrence of ADR in DRP among males and females was found to be 46% and 40.3% respectively. An increase of 5.3% in ADR hospitalizations was observed over these 3 years and most of them were moderate in severity. In ADRs, 61.3% were Type A reactions which are not preventable while 30.7% were possibly preventable and 7.9% were found to be definitely preventable.
