General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a method used to induce anesthesia leading in a deep sleep. In these method general anesthetics are used to induce loss of reversible consciousness. This method puts you into a deep sleep during the surgery and patient will not be aware of surgery.

A variety of anesthetics/anesthetic combinations can be administered through various ways like IV, IM, inhalation etc. The mechanisms of the general anesthetics are not yet well understood. The general anesthetics act at various levels on central nervous system. The common areas where general anesthetics act are cerebral cortex, thalamus, reticular activating system, and spinal cord.
