Photonic Crystals are materials which have a periodicity dielectric constant in some particular dimensions. The key point of photonic crystal is structures with periodic variations in dielectric constant. Multiple reflections from surfaces separated by a distance similar to the wavelength prevent an optical beam from propagating through the crystal. Photonic crystal devices can therefore force light around sharp bands or even trap it entirely.
